  2. Calling All Bond Fans: 007 In '07 At The Seattle Boat Show

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-17

According to a press release, the 60th annual Seattle Boat Show will be featuring boats from the James Bond films:

Calling All Bond Fans: 007 in ’07 at the Seattle Boat Show

Calling all Bond fans! The 60th Annual Seattle Boat Show (www.seattleboatshow.com), which takes place January 25-February 3 at Qwest Field Event Center and South Lake Union, is giving attendees the chance to see four authentic super spy vessels straight out of 007 films. The Show’s first-ever Boats of Bond Exhibit includes boats from Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die and The World is Not Enough.

Additionally, “Free Boating Supplies for Life” is but one of the prizes set to be given away during the Show. The Bond Trivia Contest is being offered by Boater’s World as part of the Boats of Bond display. The contest winner will receive $1,000 per year to spend at Boater’s World stores for the rest of his/her life, as long as they remain a current boat owner. The payout ends when it reaches $75,000.

Sure to be another crowd pleaser is the giveaway of one of the most sought-after boat brands in the world today — Chris Craft. During the 10-day event, a 20-foot Chris Craft Speedster will be set in a pool of water on a Sunstream Floatlift and rotate 360-degrees above a compass rose set on the floor. The lucky showgoer who correctly guesses the boat’s final compass heading when the show closes on its final day will win the $44,000 Speedster from Sundance Yacht Sales — making it the most expensive boat ever given away at a boat show in America.

    About the Boats of Bond

    Thunderball: Tow Sled (1965)
The underwater tow sled was used by James Bond and the villain Largo. There were 14 boats originally built for the production company. Today, there are only two known to exist. The original builder, Jordan Klein, owns the other remaining sled.

    Diamonds Are Forever: Bath-O-Sub (1971)
The underwater bath-o-sub is one of two originally featured in the film and was used by 007’s nemesis, Blofeld, to escape from the oil-drilling platform that doubled as his headquarters. It can be seen as Blofeld climbs inside and is lowered over the side of the oil platform.

The World Is Not Enough: Q Boat (1999)
Major Boothroyd’s famous Q boat. Fifteen boats were originally built for the production. Today only eight survive. The Q Boat that performed the barrel roll stunt seen on the screen will be on display.

Live and Let Die: Villain’s Chase Boat (1973)
In Roger Moore’s debut as 007, the action highlight is a boat chase and speedboat jump scene over the New Orleans bayou. Glastron built 26 boats for the sequence. Seventeen boats were destroyed in the 100+ practice jumps to find the optimum speed and ramp design to achieve the jump. The Glastron GT-150 flying over two police cars became a cover story in Time magazine. The villain’s boat will be on display.

For those wanting to emulate the Bond lifestyle, also at the show (and available for purchase) will be two Sunseeker motor yachts (the Manhattan 50 and the Portofino 53) from Seattle Boat Company.

Five Sunseeker motor yachts were used and two featured in the newly released Casino Royale. The actual Sunseeker Predator 108 — which is Le Chiffre’s residence in the movie — is for sale (but not on display) from Seattle Boat Company.

In addition to the boats for Live and Let Die, Glastron designed a custom boat for Moonraker. Glastron boats have helped Bond outrun the bad guys every time. Glastron also designed and built the infamous “Bat Boat” featured in the Batman movie (1966) and television series. Glastron runabouts will be on display during the show by Master Marine Services and Verle’s Sports Center & Marine.

    About the Boat Show

The 60th Annual Seattle Boat Show, Thursday, January 25-Saturday, February 3, features more than 1,000 boats — including fishing boats, inboard cruisers, runabouts, kayaks, sailboats and inflatables — hundreds of accessories, the latest high-tech innovations, and hundreds of hours of seminars at Qwest Field Event Center plus 300 world-class boats in their natural habitat at Chandler’s Cove on South Lake Union. CBn earlier reported on the Casino Royale Planet Ocean watch coming from Omega. Now, details have been revealed on a new James Bond exhibition in Switzerland…

OMEGA presents James Bond Exhibition at La Cite du Temps in Geneva

Omega, Swiss luxury watchmaker and creator of “the Bond watch”, has opened its James Bond Exhibition to the public at Cite du Temps in Geneva, Switzerland. On display until end of January 2007 is an exclusive selection of photographs, Omega watches worn by members of the cast, and props used in the filming of Casino Royale, the 21st and most recent film adventure featuring Ian Fleming’s legendary British spy. Among the artifacts on display are a number of personal items–a book of poems, a handkerchief, a letter, keys, a bottle of perfume–belonging to Vesper Lynd, played by the beautiful French actress, Eva Green. Additional items of interest to Bond fans include the inhaler used by Bond’s nemesis, Le Chiffre, an architectural scale model of the fictional “Casino Royale” in Montenegro and, naturally, the Bond watch worn in the film by Daniel Craig, the British actor playing James Bond for the first time.

In point of fact, Daniel Craig wears two Omega watches in Casino Royale. The first is a striking black Planet Ocean, the professional diver’s watch Bond wears before he earns his notorious “license to kill”. The second is “the Bond watch” familiar from earlier films in the long-running series, an Omega Seamaster Professional. Also on view in the Geneva exhibition are producer Barbara Broccoli’s copy of the Casino Royale screenplay, Bond’s money clip and credit cards, British passports made out to Bond and Vesper Lynd, short videos with scenes from the film, and large-scale photographs from the set, many of which have not previously been released elsewhere.

The Omega James Bond Exhibition is open to the public at Cite du Temps, the Swatch Group cultural centre in the heart of Geneva, Switzerland. The historic building at Pont de la Machine 1 has been a city landmark since the 1840s. Originally constructed to supply water to the city’s new fountains and recently restructured by the Swatch Group, it has become a vital source of energy for the arts and culture in Geneva. The interactive venue accommodates cultural events, conferences, permanent exhibitions and a broad range of temporary exhibitions.

Celebrating the return of James Bond to the silver screen, Omega has released two new limited-edition Bond watches: The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Casino Royale, available in a limited edition of 5,007, and the James Bond Limited Series, an exclusive new Omega Seamaster Professional featuring the classic blue “Bond” bezel and 007 numerals at the tip of the seconds hand, limited to 10,007 pieces. Among the first Bond watches to be equipped with the exclusive Omega Co-Axial Escapement, both models are professional diver’s watches and COSC-certified chronometers.

  4. French Academic Conference To Study James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-01

James Bond will be the topic of a large academic conference this month, reports The Times.

Organized by the French National Library, the universities of Nanterre and Versailles, and the European Centre for Audiovisual Writing, the three-day conference will focus on ‘Bond’s influence on the British identity, on capitalism, geopolitics, gastronomy and sexuality.’

‘Despite a few studies, largely Anglo-Saxon, James Bond literature does not seem to have received the scientific attention that it merits,’ according to the Centre for Cultural History of Contemporary Societies at Versailles University.

‘Bond is a cultural phenomenon and it is well worthwhile asking ourselves how this character has managed to cross so many political time zones and remain with us to this day,’ said Vincent Chenille, a researcher at the centre.

‘His novels are seen here as the sort of thing you buy in a station while waiting for a train. But they should be treated with more respect than that. Most French people discovered James Bond at the cinema and don’t necessarily realise that he was a literary hero first. We want to rectify that.’

  7. Germany Seeks EU Licence To Kill James Bond On TV

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-09

The James Bond 007 films may be in jeopardy when it comes to appearances on German TV because of new advertising rules adopted by the European Union. The full press release:

Germany Seeks EU Licence To Kill James Bond On TV

James Bond could disappear from German TV screens if the country gets its way when the European Union adopts new advertising rules, despite the veteran spy’s occasional fondness for BMW cars.

The European Commission has proposed allowing product placement, the use of branded goods in programming, across the 25-nation bloc to help broadcasters cope with increased competition for advertising revenue.

It would put European producers on an equal footing with their U.S. counterparts, who make shows crammed with branded products, officials from the EU executive said on Thursday.

But Germany wants to ban the practice, a move which EU officials said would be a licence to kill films on television, because they all contain branded products in some form.

“That would mean the directive would ban James Bond movies on a German television screen,” an EU official said.

Bond movie Die Another Day was for some critics an extended advertisement as 20 companies paid a total of $70 million to have their fast cars and expensive watches featured.

The British spook drove German BMW cars in at least three films, even though in the book he’s found behind the wheel of a Bentley.

Product placement is part of a reform of EU audiovisual content rules, known as “television without frontiers”, to bring the bloc’s media law in line with a digital age.

Under the German proposal, product placement would be banned on television, but each member state would have the right to pass a national law to introduce it in their own country.

    DICTATING STORYLINES

Germany is concerned about the need to keep a strict line between editorial content and advertising to protect consumers.

British telecoms watchdog Ofcom, which recently concluded a consultation on the issue, said the U.S. market for product placement is worth 1 percent of total ad revenues, which would equate to about 100 million pounds in Britain.

“Broadcasters think it’s a good idea, but viewers are pretty nervous. They are worried about editorial integrity and what they see as U.S.-style product integration where advertisers dictate storylines,” an Ofcom spokesman said.

European Commission officials say Germany could end up shooting itself in the foot, because if it wanted to introduce product placement later, each German state would be involved in adopting a national law, a complex process.

The EU executive would have to take a member state to court if there were product placement on national television without authorisation, a European Commission official said.

The European Parliament’s culture committee votes on the draft rules on Monday, when EU states also discuss the proposal.

Full parliament and member states have the final say.
