  2. James Bond Season At BFI IMAX

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-04

Five classic 007 films will be screened in early May on the biggest screen in Britain. In addition, a Bond All-Nighter will take place in late April, featuring four back-to-back Bond film screenings, including Dr. No.

    Dr No
After a pending legal case scuppered plans to make Thunderball the first Bond film, Broccoli and Saltzman decided on Dr No. Sean Connery was cast in the lead role and the film featured the usual Broccoli touch of exotic locations: this time Jamaica and surrounding waters, from which a bikini-clad Andress memorably emerged. A fast-paced, colourful romp, the film became an enormous hit worldwide.

    Goldfinger
To many, the quintessential Bond film and a brilliant third entry in the series following the terrific From Russia With Love. Here Bond gets his Aston Martin, spars with two statuesque British beauties (Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton) and pits his wits against a memorable villain, Auric Goldfinger. Add the first Shirley Bassey theme song and some exciting action sequences and the result is a near-perfect cocktail.

    On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Connery’s decision to quit as Bond left Broccoli and Saltzman with a headache. The press went into overdrive speculating on Connery’s successor; while the producers chose good-looking Australian actor George Lazenby after successful screen tests. Avengers superstar Diana Rigg was brought in as an added lure and the resulting action-packed film ensured that the franchise would continue.

    The Spy Who Loved Me
Broccoli had been having problems with his business partner and, after Golden Gun, UA bought out Saltzman’s share: this is the first Bond film where Broccoli has sole producer credit. The pre-credit sequence features arguably the most daring stunt in all Bondage, when ski-jumper Rick Sylvester (doubling for Moore) skis off the edge of a cliff and seems to fall endlessly before triggering a Union Jack parachute. On initial release the stunt drew spontaneous rounds of applause from disbelieving audiences.

  3. The Bond Museum

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-28

Following up yesterday’s news that a 5 April opening date had been announced Keswick’s James Bond Museum, CommanderBond.net now has in-depth details on the numerous vehicles and gadgets featured in the 007 series that will be on display.

Full press release information follows below:

    The Bond Museum

Roger Moore and Barbara Bach with The Spy Who Loved Me's Lotus Esprit'

Roger Moore and Barbara Bach with The Spy Who Loved Me‘s Lotus Esprit

An exciting new museum will open in the Lake District on the 5th of April 2009. The Bond Museum is the brainchild of Peter Nelson who has been collecting James Bond items for 20 years and now has the biggest private collection in the World. The museum will feature several Aston Martin and Lotus cars used in the Bond films along side many other vehicles including the actual Russian T55 main battle tank used in the film GoldenEye, as well as boats , planes and even a Bell Jetranger helicopter.

The 5th of April is also a very special date being the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Albert R (Cubby) Broccoli. As a tribute to the Bond producer Nelson will unveil a bust on that date at the museum.

Nelson has also collected many of the props from the films, several being donated by many of the actors and crew. One of the iconic items on display will be the original Colibri Golden Gun plus many Q gadgets. However, it is the vehicles, many of which have never been seen by the public which will form the centre piece of the museum.

Nelson also owns the now famous Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in the town, but because the current museum is too small to house his large collection of Bond vehicles it had to have a new purpose built site close by.

“This will be a museum dedicated to the fans of 007,” states Nelson, who was a school boy when he first read the books of Ian Fleming and later became a fan himself of the films. “Like many others I have grown up with James Bond and its fantastic that the franchise continues in the very capable hands of the Fleming family, Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson and family,” says Nelson.

Ask him who is his favourite Bond and he states that each Bond was perfect for that era however his favourite film is Goldfinger, simply because it features the gadget laden DB5 which he states is the greatest car ever made–he should know he has two!

But Nelson has had his problems building such a major attraction, namely the sheer cost of the project. When he required a further extension to his overdraft he sent a very ‘tongue in cheek’ fax to his bank manager stating that failure to comply with his request would result in demolition of the bank with his tank. When the fax was intercepted by one of the junior staff in the absence of the manager he thought it a serious threat and nearly called the police! However the manager eventually granted the payment without recourse to Nelson’s threat!

At one time Nelson thought about selling the entire collection and did approach Christies, but on reflection he felt that it would be a shame to split the collection up since it is one of great historic as well as cultural importance. “Fans of Bond will want to see this collection in it’s entirety” Nelson states. And he has ensured that the museum has been completed to a standard that will impress visitors and also help to promote the films and the books. Nelson said that he is re reading Fleming’s books and has been so impressed how well written they are. “New Bond books have been written, but you simply can’t equal Fleming: he was an outstanding author”, says Nelson. Nelson also states that he is a great admirer of the work of Cubby Broccoli who he sites as a genius in his ability in finding and attracting the very best cast and crew for the films. “The most amazing thing is that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have been able to carry on Cubby’s superb legacy extremely well indeed, which was no mean feat.” He is therefore sure that Bond will go on for many years to come.

The museum will be open from the 5th April 10am to 5pm. The unveiling of Nelsons bust of ‘Cubby’ at 10am on that morning.

List of vehicles in the collection:

  4. Keswick's James Bond Museum To Open On 5 April

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-27

A grand opening has been announced for the James Bond Museum planned in Keswick, UK: Sunday, 5 April.

The Times & Star reports that Peter Nelson, who also currently oversees the town’s Cars of the Stars exhibition, has assembled more than 25 vehicles from the 007 film series for this new exhibit.

Included are submarines, cars, motorbikes and speedboats that appeared in films such as Diamonds Are Forever and Die Another Day. Other non-vehicle items from the Bond films on display will include Francisco Scaramanga’s weapon of choice from The Man with the Golden Gun.

Says Nelson: ‘I’ve been collecting Bond pieces and Bond props quietly over the past 20 years. I have lots of things that have never been displayed before.’

‘We collected them for the Cars of the Stars and Bond is a big part of the celebrity vehicles; there are 22 films so there is a lot to go at. I got to the point of wondering if I should sell it for fans of Bond to be able to see everything.’

The museum, which has been in development since last year, has attracted a great deal of interest from James Bond fans around the world. ‘People have already said they would fly over from America and Australia to see the vehicles, because they are so shocked and excited that someone has been able to have so much,’ commented Nelson.

‘I can’t believe it myself when I walk round.’

Nelson will also unveil his sculpture of Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli at the event. The 5 April opening marks the centenary of longtime Bond film producer.

  9. James Bond Is Back At BFI Southbank

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-18
    Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli

    Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli

2009 marks the centenary of legendary James Bond producer Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. To mark the event, BFI Southbank has teamed up with Eon Productions to launch a truly special season of 007 films throughout April and May 2009.

In addition to the numerous Bond and non-Bond screenings planned, other highlights of this retrospective will include exclusive exhibitions from Eon and BFI Southbank, a ‘Bond School’ event and much, much more.

    The full press release follows:

    JAMES BOND IS BACK
    AT BFI SOUTHBANK

    'Dr. No'

The BFI and EON Productions are excited to announce a very special season of films and events to mark the centenary of Albert R ‘Cubby’ Broccoli – the man who brought Bond to the big screen.

Albert R. Broccoli (1909-1996) also known as ‘Cubby’ was the driving force behind bringing James Bond to the big screen. Born into an Italian-American family, Broccoli’s early career in Hollywood started as an assistant director on a Howard Hughes picture, The Outlaw, directed by Howard Hawkes. In 1952 Broccoli started his producing career when he came to England and launched Warwick Films with Irving Allen. Broccoli’s interest in Ian Fleming’s “Bond” stories, led him to Canadian producer, Harry Saltzman. Together they formed EON Productions and in 1962 produced the first James Bond film, Dr. No (1962). When Harry Saltzman sold his share to United Artists in 1977, Broccoli continued as the “man behind Bond” producing a further seven films before passing the torch on to his stepson Michael G. Wilson and daughter, Barbara Broccoli.

To celebrate this legacy, and the impact of the franchise on film culture, BFI Southbank will present a dazzling retrospective of Broccoli’s work in April and May 2009. Bond films must be seen as they were originally intended, on the big screen, and all James Bonds will be represented.

Highlights of the season will include the re-release of From Russia With Love (1963) and masterclasses in Bond led by key film talent. Exclusive exhibitions from EON and BFI archives will present the look of Bond, and with ‘Bond school’ in the Easter holidays, we will revisit the style, music and history of the world’s favourite secret agent. In addition, there will be a BFI Weekender including events, Q&A’s and games to entice anyone along for a shaken not stirred weekend of merriment. There will also be exciting events for younger Bond fans and a special Family Funday (did you know that Broccoli also brought us that childhood classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)?!).

And this is just the beginning of our mission…

    APRIL PROGRAMME

From Russia With Love – EXTENDED RUN (Digital print)
    Fri 24 April – Thur 7 May

Broccoli considered From Russia With Love (1963) as one of the best Fleming stories. Connery once again excelled and was well supported by a great cast including Robert Shaw, wonderfully menacing as a brutal killer; and Lotte Lenya as Russian SPECTRE agent Rosa Klebb, with the famous poison-tipped knife device in her shoe. The film also features many distinctive Bond motifs for the first time (a pre-credit sequence; iconic main titles; John Barry’s first score and a sweeping theme song; Desmond Llewelyn as Q, etc) and its huge success firmly established the 007 films as a cultural phenomenon.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced that Pinewood and Shepperton Studios will receive the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 8 February 2009.

Awarded annually, the award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema was introduced in 1978 and is presented in honour of Michael Balcon. The first recipients were the Special Visual Effects team for Superman and others include Kevin Brownlow, Mike Leigh, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jarman, Lewis Gilbert, Channel Four Films, production manager Joyce Herlihy and stuntman Vic Armstrong. Last year’s winner was props master Barry Wilkinson whose career spans over 40 years on such iconic, British film franchises as Harry Potter and Bond.

Shepperton Studios and Pinewood Studios are Europe’s leading filming facilities and two of the world’s most prestigious studios. They are synonymous with world class British and international productions, and the impressive heritage of these industry stalwarts dates back nearly 75 years.

They have been home to some of the most successful, critically acclaimed and award winning feature films ever made such as The African Queen, David Lean’s Great Expectations, Dr Strangelove, Superman, Alien, The Shining, Gandhi, and most recently The Bourne Ultimatum and 20 of the 22 Bonds including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

The studios have grown alongside the film industry and now boast the largest sound stage in Europe. Originally built for The Spy Who Loved Me, it has since hosted the Louvre Gallery for The Da Vinci Code, a Greek fishing village for Mamma Mia! and a chocolate river for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Other globally unique facilities include the Underwater Stage which has been used by Joe Wright for Atonement, H Stage which became a full-scale Batcave in Batman Begins and the Korda Theatre which has mixed the sound for the award winning Shakespeare in Love and Gosford Park amongst many other films.

With over 1,500 films having been made at the studios, they have been a home away from home for many filmmakers such as Ridley Scott and Paul Greengrass. The studios have also nurtured such talent as Tim Burton who has shot five films at the studios including Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow and this year’s two-time BAFTA nominee, Kate Winslet, who has completed seven films at the studios including Sense and Sensibility and Finding Neverland.

The studios are continuing to look to the future by providing vocational training to educate the UK’s world class creative sector and provide a blank canvas for the imagination of the international film community.

Finola Dwyer, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said: “Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have been at the creative heart of British filmmaking for over 70 years. This award recognises the role they have played in bringing to life some of the most memorable and iconic images in cinema history.”

Ivan Dunleavy, Chief Executive of Pinewood Shepperton plc adds: “We are absolutely thrilled that the role of Pinewood Studios and Shepperton Studios has been honoured in this way, recognising the skills of all the people who have worked there over the last 75 years and the contribution which the Studios have made to British cinema and the UK.”

The Orange British Academy Film Awards begin on BBC Two from 8pm, with the final hour on BBC One from 9pm on Sunday 8 February. A preview show featuring interviews from the red carpet will be broadcast on BBC Three from 7pm.

The 22nd 007 film, Quantum of Solace, is currently up for two BAFTA awards: Special Visual Effects and Sound. Click here for further details.
