  2. Epix To Launch Video-On-Demand Service Featuring James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-05-14

Epix, a new movie service formed by Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate, is planning to launch an online HD video-on-demand service using a dynamic-streaming feature offered with Akamai Technologies’ content-distribution network.

Multichannel News reports that this new VOD service will include the rights to 17 remastered James Bond films.

Other films and shows to be included are Star Trek, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Cloverfield, Defiance, Drillbit Taylor, The Duchess, How She Move, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Iron Man, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Epix previously said it was expecting to launch initially as a broadband-video service in May, followed by the linear cable channel in October, although the company declined to say when it will officially launch or provide pricing for the service.

Akamai is offering the dynamic-streaming feature through Adobe Flash Media Server 3.5. With the feature, video playback adapts to the capabilities of users’ computers, adjusting the bit rate of the video stream for lower-speed processors or slower Internet connections.

‘The Epix model of commercial-free, uninterrupted current Hollywood movies will set a new online content bar,’ Epix chief digital officer Emil Rensing said in a statement. ‘Akamai’s dynamic streaming solution enables us to be one of the first to provide the accessibility, quality and convenience which today’s digital consumers desire. We’re excited to build our online ecosystem with a partner who is also intent on delivering tomorrow’s technology today.’

  3. James Bond Included In MGM's Prime Time Package To CW

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-05-14
    'Diamonds are Forever'

    Diamonds Are Forever

MGM has announced a new Prime Time Sunday movie package that features the James Bond series for the affiliates of the CW network, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

The package, which has secured a 65% clearance across the US within the past 10 days, includes four 007 films from MGM’s collection as well as non-Bond films such as Legally Blonde and Overboard.

The new package results from MGM taking over the CW’s 8-10pm Sunday night programming slots this past fall. The company then offered an upgraded line of feature films after all the CW stations took back Sunday night.

CW stations owned by Tribune Broadcasting Company, Sunbeam TV Corp., Capitol Broadcasting Company, Gray Television Inc., Freedom Communication, Inc., and the CW Plus station group have all secured the package.

‘MGM has a long track record of providing quality, ratings-driven films that work in a 52-week lineup,’ said Jim Packer, co-president of MGM Worldwide. ‘MGM has the right mix of films to deliver ratings while allowing CW stations to have some programming continuity on Sunday nights.’

  5. 'Where Would James Bond Be Without His Wristwatch?'

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-05-10

For more than half a century, the character of James Bond has relied on his wristwatch for everything from tracking enemies to demonstrating his ‘sheer magnetism’ in romance.

When Agent 007’s creator, Ian Fleming, wrote the fantastic stories that started it all in the early 1950s, he often focused on ‘time’ as a means of building tension and engaging his readers. This has remained a constant throughout the EON Productions films, which include famous countdowns to missile launches spelling certain global destruction – if James Bond doesn’t make it in time!

‘Where would James Bond be without his wristwatch?’ is one of the featured presentations at the NAWCC National Convention on Saturday, 13 June 2009, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The talk will be given by Dell Deaton, author of the February 2009 ‘WatchTime’ feature that details his discovery of the original literary-Bond wristwatch (Dell is also a member of the CommanderBond.net Forums).

Examples of James Bond watch models from Breitling, Omega, Rolex, and Seiko will be featured.

For further details on this event taking place at the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Annual Convention, head over to www.nawcc.org.

  6. MGM And Showtime Arabia Sign Deal For All 22 James Bond Films

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-05-10

It was announced today that MGM Studios and Showtime Arabia, the leading Pay-TV network in the Middle East and North Africa, have signed a new five year deal that includes the complete James Bond collection–all 22 films including Quantum of Solace.

Full details follow in the press release below:

Showtime Signs Five-Year Exclusive Deal With MGM To Bring Blockbusters To Middle East Viewers

James Bond’s Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace, Rocky Balboa, Lions for Lambs, and Pink Panther-2 Among Movies To Hit Showtime Screens

    'Thunderball'

    Thunderball

Showtime Arabia, the leading Pay-TV network in the Middle East and North Africa, today announced it signed a five-year deal with MGM Worldwide Television, a division of Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Studios Inc., bringing a bouquet of blockbusters to Showtime customers throughout the Middle East.

The agreement marks MGM’s first Video On Demand (VOD) offer in the region and offers MGM’s films exclusively to Showtime customers. With 205 Academy Awards, the world’s largest library of modern films and home to numerous successful film franchises, including James Bond, Pink Panther and Rocky, MGM is a fantastic addition to Showtime customers’ entertainment line-up.

The deal adds MGM to the list of powerhouse studios that are signed up with SHOWTIME including Sony, Disney, Universal, Dreamworks, and many local and international producers.

According to the terms of the five-year agreement, Showtime Arabia will carry MGM titles such as the recent James Bond franchise hits that include Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, the final installment in the Rocky franchise Rocky Balboa, the political thriller Lions for Lambs starring Tom Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, and Pink Panther-2, starring Steve Martin.

Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, President and CEO, Showtime Arabia, said: “MGM’s brand and its diverse selection of popular feature films will enrich our customers’ experience. We’re very proud to add MGM’s popular film franchises to Showtime’s Pay TV and Video On Demand services and look forward to exploring other opportunities with the studio.”

Chris Ottinger, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Television, MGM, said: “As the leading Pay TV provider throughout the region, Showtime Arabia is an ideal partner for MGM. We are pleased to collaborate with Showtime Arabia in bringing MGM’s theatrical blockbusters to the movie fans throughout the Middle East and believe the Video On Demand platform will be a tremendous asset in gaining exposure for MGM’s films and growing our global VOD business model.”

Showtime will kick off the partnership in June, premiering two of the latest Bond films in the 007 franchise. A man that needs no introduction, Daniel Craig hasn’t lost a step since Casino Royale. This James Bond remains dangerous, a man who could earn that license to kill in brutal hand-to-hand combat, but still look sharp in a tailored suit. And Quantum of Solace carries on from the previous film like no other 007 movie, with Bond nursing his anger from the Casino Royale storyline and vowing blood revenge on those responsible.

Later this year, Showtime will hit the ultimate in viewing – the complete collection of James Bond films – 22 in total making the 007 franchise one of the most famous and indeed the longest running in the history of cinema. Showtime customers can also look forward to many future titles currently in production including Cabin in the Woods starring Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins and Hot Tub Machine starring John Cusack.

  7. Spend Sundays With James Bond 007

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-05-05

Spend Sundays With James Bond 007

Spend Sundays With James Bond 007

In celebration of the centenary of producer Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli, born in 1909, a season of classic James Bond films have been digitally restored and are returning to cinemas nationwide distributed by classic film specialists, Park Circus.

Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, will be screening on consecutive Sundays at over 60 cinemas around the country.

The four classic films will be screened via the UK Film Council’s Digital Screen Network, enabling audiences to enjoy the outstanding picture quality and improved sound offered by this technologically advanced format. The digital release is Lottery funded through the UK Film Council’s Prints and Advertising Fund.

The Bond films in the Broccoli centenary season have been digitally restored frame by frame by Lowry Digital Images, the world’s leader in digital restoration and image enhancement. The process involves taking moving pictures that show signs of age and wear, removing the fading, dirt, scratches and other defects that occur over time, and returning them to their original condition.

    Screening schedule:

    Sunday 7 June: Dr. No
Sunday 14 June: From Russia with Love
    Sunday 21 June: Goldfinger
Sunday 28 June: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

    Dr. No
UK 1962. Dir Terence Young. With Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Joseph Wiseman. 105min. PG. New digital restoration.

Sean Connery was cast in the lead role and the film featured the usual Broccoli touch of exotic locations: this time Jamaica and surrounding waters, from which a bikini-clad Ursula Andress memorably emerged. A fast-paced colourful romp, the film became an enormous hit worldwide.

    From Russia with Love
UK 1963. Dir Terence Young. With Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, Lotte Lenya, Daniela Bianchi. 115min. PG. New digital restoration.

Broccoli considered this as one of the best Fleming stories. Connery once again excelled and was well supported by a great cast including Robert Shaw, wonderfully menacing as a brutal killer; and Lotte Lenya as the Russian agent with the famous poison-tipped knife device in her shoe. The film also features many distinctive Bond motifs for the first time and its huge success firmly established the 007 films as a cultural phenomenon.

    Goldfinger
UK 1964. Dir Guy Hamilton. With Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gert Fröbe. 109min. PG. New digital restoration.

To many, the quintessential Bond film and a brilliant third entry in the series. Here Bond gets his Aston Martin, spars with two statuesque British beauties (Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton) and pits his wits against a memorable villain, Auric Goldfinger. Add the first Shirley Bassey theme song and some exciting action sequences and the result is an explosive cocktail.

    On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
UK 1969. Dir Peter Hunt. With George Lazenby, Telly Savalas, Diana Rigg. 140min. PG. New digital restoration.

Connery’s decision to quit as Bond left Broccoli and Saltzman with a headache. The press went into overdrive speculating on Connery’s successor; while the producers chose good-looking Australian actor George Lazenby after successful screen tests. Avengers superstar Diana Rigg was brought in as an added lure and the resulting action-packed film ensured that the franchise would continue.
