  4. Swatch Introduces The 007 Villain Collection

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-05

While Omega might be James Bond’s watch of choice, Swiss watch company Swatch is catering it’s newest line–the 007 Villain Collection–to fans of the numerous Bond baddies.

    The official press release follows:

    Dr. Swatch Plays Bad Guy
    to Bond, James Bond

Has Swatch gone over to the other side? In a surprising and provocative move, the mischievous maker of Swiss fashion watches has aligned itself with the enemies of the world’s most famous gentleman spy. “We’ve discovered the dark side of the myth,” said Nicolas G. Hayek, also nicknamed Dr. Swatch. “And we love it. It’s absolutely fascinating.” To avoid any possible misunderstandings, the notorious inspirator of the plastic Swiss watch hastened to explain his intentions: “James Bond would not exist in Ian Fleming’s novels and all the Bond films if strong, powerful villains were not also there. The villains and their henchmen play a crucial role. And if Bond is alive and well today, it is thanks in no small part to the inspiration and enduring power of his enemies.

Indeed, the fascination with Bond’s adversaries has inspired an entirely new collection, due for release in early September. The Swatch 007 Villain Collection is a tribute to the entertaining villains who light up the dark side of twenty-two James Bond films, from Dr. No to the forthcoming Quantum Of Solace.

The Swatch 007 Villain Collection evokes the most memorable of Bond’s adversaries. Who can forget these outlaw heroes, armed to the teeth and dressed to kill? From stylish Dr. No with his metal hands to Oddjob and his deadly bowler, they’re villains Bond fans love to hate.

Swatch is no stranger to special outlaws, in sports for example, and their borderline behavior. The brand is a prominent supporter of outstanding athletes and performers in the special “outlaw” free-style disciplines that test the limits of the sporting experience. From Geraldine Fasnacht to Mat Rebeaud, free-style skiers, X-boarders and free runners, Swatch embraces all special “outlaw” performers.

The Swatch 007 Villain Collection pays tribute to outstanding outlaw actors, too: Christopher Walken’s malevolent Max Zorin deserves his stylish Retrograde; Gerd Froebe’s Goldfinger gets a massive, golden Irony THE Chrono; Lotte Lenya’s Rosa Klebb wields a pair of knuckle-dusters welded to an Irony Lady. And in homage to Casino Royale, poker-faced master of malice Mads Mikkelsen (alias Le Chiffre) takes an Irony Big with an Ace of Spades. There’s more, of course, but the curtain won’t rise on the Villains for another few weeks…

Wrapping up his comments with a mischievous smile, Nicolas Hayek, founder and head of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watchmaking group, put on his corporate hat: “OMEGA is James Bond’s watch of choice, but real, interesting villains prefer Swatch.”

  5. James Bond Blu-ray Special Features Confirmed

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-30

Since their official announcement last month, details and cover art for the upcoming James Bond Blu-ray discs have started to come in.

The special features that will accompany the first six Bond titles (Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Thunderball, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only and Die Another Day) have now been confirmed in a press release.

The listing of extras should look pretty familiar to most 007 fans as it’s merely the special features that debuted on the Ultimate Edition DVDs carried over. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment did confirm to TheHDRoom that the special features would be presented in high-definition.

Furthermore, click here for a closer look at the two boxed sets that will also be released in the US, holding three Bond films each. Both of these sets will include two ‘E-movie cash’ coupons to catch Quantum of Solace in theatres.

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-20

Collecting Notice: CommanderBond.net Forum member ‘RJJB’ has informed us that Wal-Mart stores in the US have recently begun stocking the individual ‘Ultimate Edition’ James Bond DVDs with brand new lenticular lens covers.

These new lenticular covers (which feature an illusion of depth; appearing to move when viewed from different angles) each feature the 007 actor in the center with the film’s lead villain and Bond girl located on either side.

The content found on the DVDs has not changed at all as these are the exact same individual ‘Ultimate Edition’ releases, simply with the new covers attached over the originals.

So far, these have only been spotted at Wal-Mart stores. If you’ve seen them for sale elsewhere, sound off here on the CBn Forums.

All of the Bond titles have been released as individual ‘Ultimate Edition’ DVDs in the US with the exception of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Die Another Day.

Includes the Fully Restored Bond Classic Dr. No and FIVE More Action-Packed, Must-Own 007 Titles Available for the First Time Ever in High Definition; Timed to Theatrical Premiere of Quantum of Solace

LOS ANGELES-The world’s most well known secret agent and his bevy of babes are even hotter in high definition when six, must-have, classic James Bond films debut worldwide on Blu-ray Disc – (OCT. 21 North America / OCT. 20 UK/International) – from MGM and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Recently restored and re-mastered for the highest quality picture and sound quality via the state-of-the-art Lowry process digital frame-by-frame restoration and featuring special features galore, Bond is primed for Blu-ray Disc with a selection of 007 adventures spanning the storied career of cinema’s most recognizable spy. Bond titles arriving on Blu-ray Disc, timed to the highly anticipated worldwide theatrical premiere of the 22nd James Bond mission Quantum of Solace this November, include Dr. No, Die Another Day, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, From Russia With Love and Thunderball.

The world’s most successful film franchise, Bond… James Bond has generated more than one billion dollars in global box office gross and boasts an astounding 98% global consumer awareness. Casino Royale, the most recent James Bond film starring Daniel Craig, debuted on BD March 2007, and continues to rank as one of the best selling Blu-ray Disc releases to-date.

“With Quantum of Solace on the horizon, Bond fever is building once again and there is no better time to re-introduce these beloved films featuring the best picture and sound quality available today to the 60 million+ HD-capable households worldwide,” said Eric Doctorow, General Manager Worldwide, MGM Home Entertainment.

Exact worldwide market release dates and title configurations will be announced in the coming weeks.

Blu-ray Disc is the next generation optical disc format developed for high-definition video and high-capacity software applications. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 25 gigabytes of data and a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 50 gigabytes of data. This greater storage capacity enables the Blu-ray Disc to store over six times the amount of content than is possible with current DVDs, and is particularly well-suited for high definition feature films with extended levels of additional bonus and interactive material. Blu-ray also features the most advanced copy protection, player backward compatibility with the current DVD format, connectivity and advanced interactivity.

MGM and Fox’s commitment to emerging technologies is dedicated to enhancing the consumer experience of its products and providing for backward compatibility with their existing home entertainment libraries while also aggressively protecting its intellectual property from piracy. The Blu-ray companies fully embrace the studios’ steadfast commitment to the fight against piracy and the preservation of the integrity of its properties. Twentieth Century Fox is a member of the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association.
