First glimpse of Penguin’s new Bond book, ‘Devil May Care’

James Bond is renowned for his impeccable taste when it comes to women, and the girl on the front of the brand new Bond book will leave you both shaken and stirred.

The jacket image for Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks, is unveiled today (Monday 3rd December). It features the model Tuuli Shipster, muse of the British photographer, Rankin.

Tuuli says: “I was thrilled that Penguin chose me to be their Bond girl. It’s fantastic to be involved with something so iconic.”

Tuuli, the daughter of a diplomat, is just one of the elements on the cover of the eagerly-awaited new Bond book. The cover image features a blood red flower with the silhouette of a naked woman as its stem, against a black background – strictly for your eyes only.

Alex Clarke, Penguin Editor of Devil May Care, says: “The cover had to be something stylish and sophisticated – all the things that one associates with Fleming’s James Bond. With such a great concept the challenge was then to find the perfect girl to bring it to life. We just knew the moment we saw her that Tuuli was our Bond girl.”

The jacket image was created by the award winning design agency, The Partners, who work with some of Britain’s oldest heritage brands including Jaguar, Wedgwood, Harrods, the BBC and The National Gallery.

Jack Renwick, Creative Director, The Partners says: “It’s an honour to become a small part of Bond’s rich visual history. Bond is sex, intrigue and violence. We wanted to capture this and give a subtle nod to the familiar, iconic Bond images of old. It is with great pride that The Partners adds Penguin’s latest Bond to their portfolio.”

The cover photograph was taken by British photographer and commercials director, Kevin Summers.

Devil May Care is written by best selling author Sebastian Faulks and is set in the Cold War. It will be published by Penguin on 28th May 2008 to mark the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth. Alongside the publication of Devil May Care, there is a year long programme of projects planned for the centenary, including exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and the Fleming Collection and special Ian Fleming’s James Bond stamps issued by the Royal Mail.

Ian Fleming’s 14 James Bond novels will also be republished on 28 May 2008 under the Penguin 007 imprint.

  4. Penguin's Massive Marketing and Sales Plans For Sebastian Faulks' 'Devil May Care'

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-11-07

Penguin said they were planning a celebration of 007 in 2008, and it looks like they weren’t kidding.

The Bookseller reports that Penguin has set a UK hardback sales target of 250,000 copies for Devil May Care, the new James Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks due for release in May 2008 in honour of Ian Fleming’s centenary.

Additionally, the publisher has revealed that brand new hardback editions of all 14 of the original Fleming Bond novels are also on the way. To be published as part of the new Penguin 007 imprint, each title will retail for £14.99.

Penguin General m.d. Tom Weldon discussed the company’s world domination plans for 28 May 2008–the day Devil May Care hits sheves–with retailers last night: ‘Sebastian has written a tour de force… it is everything we hoped for and a couple of Martinis more.’ He promised an unmissable marketing and publicity campaign. ‘Imagine a speedboat coming down the Thames with the first copy… imagine [Penguin marketing chiefs] Joanna Prior and Naomi Fidler in gold lamé swimsuits abseiling down the building.’

Those in attendance were given a glimpse of the book’s cover, which was designed by The Partners and ‘features a single iconic image.’ The Partners is a London based brand agency whose clients include luxury brands such as Jaguar, De Beers, Harrods, and Sax Fifth Avenue.

Describing the novel, Faulks said he had retained about 80% of Fleming’s style and avoided deep psychological portraits. ‘It’s a period adventure in which I’ve tried to capture a playful spirit. This is not Bond meets Charlotte Gray… my Bond has no inner life.’ Favourite characters Felix Leiter and Miss Moneypenny will also both make a return.

Due out on 28 May 2008 for Ian Fleming’s centenary, this UK hardback edition of Devil May Care runs at 320 pages and will retail for £18.99. According to Faulks, Devil May Care is set in 1967 when ‘Bond is damaged, aging and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission.’

In addition, Young James Bond fans can now pre-order the UK paperback edition of Charlie Higson’s Hurricane Gold, which also hits book shelves on 28 May. The newest Young Bond adventure will retail for £6.99. Click here for the brand new cover artwork.

  6. Faulks Follows Fleming's 'How To Write A Thriller' Guidelines

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-10-21

New James Bond website The Literary 007 reports that a recent interview with Sebastian Faulks, author of the upcoming Ian Fleming centenary novel Devil May Care, has been posted online at NPR.

After speaking about his recently released novel Engleby, Faulks also discussed the eagerly anticipated James Bond novel and how he came to land the job.

‘This came up about a year or so ago,’ Faulks says. ‘I was summoned by Ian Fleming’s family, who pointed out it was Fleming’s centenary next year and how would I like to write a special novel commissioned by them to mark that centenary.’

‘So I went away and read the Ian Fleming books and I enjoyed them much more than I thought I would. I then read an article that Fleming wrote in about 1960 called How To Write A Thriller. Well, I didn’t have the first idea how to write a thriller; I don’t particularly like them. But this told you how to do it: write 2,000 words a day, go snorkeling, have a few martinis, have some beautiful women over for dinner…’

‘I figured out that if I wrote 2,000 words a day, I could write the whole story in six weeks. So I followed [Fleming’s] prescription and I wrote it in six weeks and it was great, great fun to do. So that’s coming out next May.’

When asked if he’d reconciled with the fact that fans will soon be singing the James Bond theme where ever he went, Faulks mentioned: ‘It [already] happened to me in a restaurant in London. I was going over to a table and holding a glass of wine and the literary editior of The Observer (a Sunday newspaper in the UK) looked at my glass and said ‘shaken, not stirred, I presume?’

Devil May Care is due for release in May 2008 and will be published by Penguin in the UK and Doubleday in the US.

  7. 'Devil May Care' Large Print Paperback Coming In May '08

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-09-25

With the date of Ian Fleming’s centenary slowly approaching, details and ordering info on Devil May Care, the forthcoming James Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks, are starting to pick up.

The Young Bond Dossier reports that a large print paperback edition of the new 007 novel by Faulks is available to pre-order at amazon.com.

To be published by Random House Large Print, the 480 page long paperback will retail for $24.95 and is due to be released alongside the regular US hardback and audiobook.

Typically released in very limited quantites, and the majority going to libraries make large print James Bond novels sometimes very difficult to track down. Pre-ordering is strongly recommended. Past large print editions have appeared for Raymond Benson’s High Time To Kill, The World Is Not Enough, Doubleshot, Never Dream Of Dying, and Die Another Day, as well as many of the Ian Fleming novels and all of the John Gardner novels with the exception of 1989’s Licence To Kill. Recent large print releases include Live And Let Die, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Charlie Higson’s SilverFin.

According to Faulks, Devil May Care is set in 1967 when “Bond is damaged, aging and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission.”

  8. Sebastian Faulks Puts James Bond Back In A Bentley

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-09-15

While the cinematic 007 and Aston Martin seem to go hand in hand, this won’t be the case for the upcoming centenary James Bond novel, Devil May Care, by Sebastian Faulks.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Faulks will be putting James Bond back behind the wheel of a Bentley. ‘Despite many of the films portraying him with an Aston Martin, Bond’s first choice of car was a Bentley, so that is what he will be driving in my book,’ the author said.

‘He also spends quite a lot of time abroad on his adventure, so in want of a hire car, which wouldn’t really befit James, he will also have a driver at his disposal.’

Faulks also revealed that the car would be ‘battleship grey’–the same colour of the supercharged Bentley 4 1/2-Litre convertible featured in Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.

James Rosenstein, Bentley’s global director of external affairs, said: ‘It is wonderful that somebody has decided to go back to the roots of the original book, to Ian Fleming’s own tastes and to James Bond’s passion for the cars.’ He also mentioned that car could be a 1967 T-series Bentley.

As previously mentioned by Faulks, Devil May Care is set in 1967 when ‘Bond is damaged, aging and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission.’ The novel’s action is played out over two continents and ‘several of the world’s most thrilling cities’ including Paris.

Devil May Care is due for release in May 2008 and will be published by Penguin in the UK and Doubleday in the US.

  9. Sebastian Faulks Talks 'Devil May Care'

    By Matt Weston on 2007-09-14

In an Associated Press interview (run in The Chronicle Journal), author Sebastian Faulks spoke briefly about writing the upcoming James Bond novel, Devil May Care.

Most significantly, Faulks mentioned the girls to be featured in his book would be “more than a match” for 007; this is the first time the author has mentioned the role Bond girls will play in Devil May Care.

Faulks revealed he particularly likes the discipline of writing a James Bond book.

“I’d spent nearly five years in psychiatric hospitals and medical libraries writing an immensely long and difficult book (Human Traces),” Faulks said.

“It’s possible there are no two books in publishing history more dissimilar than Human Traces and Devil May Care. And that was really the attraction of it.”

The writer once again said his initial reluctance to accept the project was countered by the fact he re-read the Ian Fleming novels only to find they were concise, thrilling and playfully funny. Faulks also reiterated the fact the book will be “about 80 per cent Ian Fleming” and that he wrote the book according to Fleming’s methods – 2,000 words a day for six weeks.

Devil May Care is due out in May next year.
