  1. Collecting 007: Coronet's withdrawn Dr. No cover

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-01-26
    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

In 1988 and ’89, UK-based publisher Hodder and Stoughton began to publish Ian Fleming’s original James Bond adventures in paperback under their Coronet imprint.

Aiming for a universal look for the series, the cover artwork for each book featured a different coloured background along with a silhouette of 007 and “James Bond” prominently featured in the center. As an added bonus, each book was accompanied by a new preface by author Anthony Burgess entitled The James Bond Novels: An Introduction.

Future printings of the novels followed into the 1990’s when it was soon decided that a cover revamp was needed for the series. With artwork provided by David Scutt, Bill Gregory and Paul Robinson, the new cover artwork focused on a particular element for each book (Moonraker featured the cards from the bridge game, The Spy Who Loved Me has Bond’s punctured car tire and so on…).

One oddity in the series some literary 007 collectors have come across is the fact that two Coronet covers exist for Fleming’s Dr. No. The much more common of the two shows a dangling spider while the other features a woman’s hand brandishing a knife over a blue water background.

It has been determined that this blue knife cover was an unused artwork piece for the series and was mistakenly put forth as the cover for Coronet’s ninth printing (and only the ninth printing) of Dr. No. All covers before and after in this style make use of the original spider cover.

RIGHT: Spider cover accompanying all other printings

Some tips for tracking down the Dr. No ninth printing knife cover…

    • ISBN: 0-340-41899-0
Note that this ISBN is naturally featured on almost all Coronet Dr. No printings—although some, such as the fifth printing with the spider cover, feature a completely different ISBN (0-340-70343-1)!
    • While the spider covers list the illustrator as David Scutt, the knife cover attributes the artwork to Bill Gregory.
    • While early printings of Coronet’s Dr. No include the Anthony Burgess introduction, it is not included in the ninth knife cover printing, nor future printings with the spider artwork.

As this line-up of James Bond novels from Coronet is long out-of-print, Bond collectors will want to turn to sites such as eBay and AbeBooks in order to track down this elusive copy of Ian Fleming’s Dr. No.

    Happy hunting.

  6. Sale of Ian Fleming's Live and Let Die causes stir

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-12

A James Bond first edition by Ian Fleming has raised more than £3,000 at Edinburgh charity shop Oxfam.

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

The Edinburgh News reports that a donated copy of Live and Let Die, Fleming’s second 007 novel, was sold for almost £3,500.

The Bond title originally estimated to be worth around £800 but sold for more than four times that amount at Bonhams Auction House in Oxford, at the end of September.

The book turned up by surprise in a charity bin bag in September.

Oxfam Morningside bookshop manager Andy Crosby said: ‘Everyone at the shop was eager to see how much the book would be auctioned for. I didn’t think that it would raise so much money and I am thrilled that it did.’

‘It is not every day you manage to raise such an amount from the sale of one book, and the money will help to make a real difference to Oxfam’s programmes.’

  7. Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories wins award

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-05

Back in August of this year, CommanderBond.net reported that the 2008 hardback release of Ian Fleming’s Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories had been nominated in the Best Jacket/Cover Design category at the 2009 British Book Design and Production Awards.

We can now report that this 007 omnibus has taken home the top prize in it’s category following the announcement of the winners at London’s Royal Lancaster Hotel on 29 October.

BPIF Chief Executive, Michael Johnson was quoted as saying: ‘We saw an exceptional high standard of entrants this year and our judging panel did not have an easy job deciding the winners. Last night was a fantastic celebration of the outstanding creativity and quality found in British book design and production. The BPIF would like to congratulate the winners and all those who have put time and effort into creating such excellent examples of book design and production.’

Released in October 2008 to tie in with Daniel Craig’s Bond film of the same name, Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories brought together all nine of Fleming’s short stories that previously made up the For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy and The Living Daylights collections.

The book was designed by Angus Hyland and Fabian Herrmann of Pentagram; its cloth-covered boards feature a silver embossed image of 007’s weapon of choice, the Walther PPK. The book is encased in a manilla cardboard wraparound, featuring the details of Bond’s missions within.

Quantum of Solace competed against the following titles in the Best Jacket / Cover Design category:

    • Vintage Fashion (Carlton Books)
    • The Beer Book (Dorling Kindersley Publishing)
    • Gasoline (Merrell Publishers)
    • Oilopoly (Oneworld Publications)
    • The Snow Tourist (Portobello Books)
    • I Play the Drums in a Band Called Okay (Penguin Books)
    • Quantum of Solace (Penguin Books)

  8. Ian Fleming's Goldfinger to be adapted for BBC Radio

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-10-13

Ian Fleming’s seventh James Bond novel, 1959’s Goldfinger, has been announced as an upcoming BBC Radio adaptation.

    Ian Fleming's 'Goldfinger'

    Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger

The Stage reports that independent production company Jarvis and Ayres will be behind this 007 production. It is owned and run by actors Martin Jarvis and Rosalind Ayres.

This Goldfinger adaptation will follow last year’s Radio 4 production of Dr. No (also produced by Jarvis), which was produced to mark the Fleming centenary in May.

Jarvis told The Stage he had initially been given approval from Bond film company Eon Productions to produce Dr. No on a ‘special one-off’ basis. However, he said they had been so impressed with the reworking of Dr. No, which starred Die Another Day baddie Toby Stephens as 007 and David Suchet as Dr. No, that they approached Jarvis and Ayres to ask them to make another.

Jarvis added that Goldfinger will be similar to the Dr. No production, which featured narrations from a Fleming character, played by Jarvis. Casting is yet to be confirmed, but he stated that he was keen to get Stephens back again for the role of Bond.

The production is expected on Radio 4 early next year.

  9. The link between Ian Fleming's Moonraker and T-Force

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-09-30

It’s widely known that author Ian Fleming took many of his real life experiences and turned them into plot points, character features and other trivia bits in his James Bond adventures. Now, a just published book by military historian Sean Longden has found a connection between the 1955 Bond novel Moonraker and Fleming’s work in a top secret World War Two unit called Target Force.

    Ian Fleming's 'Moonraker'

    Ian Fleming’s Moonraker

As Your Local Guardian reports, Longden came across the connection while performing research for his book, entitled T-Force: The Race for Nazi War Secrets, 1945.

‘I was sitting on the beach in Greece when I suddenly realised just how much of Moonraker—which is about a villain who acquires nuclear rocket technology—was based on Fleming’s experiences with Target Force,’ Longden said.

‘It has been known for some time that Fleming carried out intelligence work during the war, which could have influenced his novels, but I think it took my work on T-Force to reveal just how close the links are.’

Fleming is reported to have worked with Target Force, a unit who was tasked wih the job of bringing Nazi scientists to Britain before they were captured by the advancing Russians. ‘Fleming was sitting at the heart of the scientific intelligence community and it helped him in his work for the Admiralty as well as with his Bond novels,’ Longden noted.

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

‘After this research there is no doubt in my mind he plundered his recollections of the top secret files that passed across his desk for much of the material in Moonraker.’

One particular comparison involves the rocket plot point in Moonraker: in the novel, villain Sir Hugo Drax is highly involved with a top secret rocket project that will supposedly benefit Britain. This echoes the real life Operation Backfire—a British project to test German V2 rockets. Target Force was involved in Backfire by recovering missiles.
