  1. Sir Roger, shaken but not stirred

    By Brett McAleer on 2003-10-10

At Buckingham palace yesterday, 75 year-old Roger Moore received his knighthood for charity work, and admitted that he was as shaken as a James Bond martini during the ceremony.

    Sir Roger

Sir Roger, who was made a CBE in 1999 and has been for the last 12 years a UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador, stated: “I was worrying about whether I was going to get up again after kneeling.

2003 has certainly become a year of highs and lows for the former Bond actor, with the low point being earlier in the year when Sir Roger suffered a heart attack while on stage in New York and underwent heart surgery to have a pacemaker inserted.

Sir Roger said that the Knighthood was better than winning an Oscar, and even spoke to the Queen about his Bond work.

  2. Honor To Host Bond Music Fest Tonight

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-10-09

Famed Bond Girl Honor Blackman is to host a Bond music concert tonight with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Carl Davis, at 7.30pm. The woman with the golden voice who played Pussy Galore in 1964’s Goldfinger also talked to Liverpool’s Daily News, in an interview featured on culture site icLiverpool.

As arguably the most enduring Bond girl of all, Blackman officially renewed her acquaintance with the James Bond industry by hosting a hugely successful concert of music from the films conducted by Carl Davis and performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Liverpool Summer Pops.

Finally, four years later, she is back with the concert on Thursday evening, this time at the Philharmonic Hall.

In typically forthright manner she says: “If somebody had said you’d still be talking about this bloody film 40 years later I would have said don’t be daft. It’s astonishing that they’re even still making the Bond series.”

“The snowball started with Goldfinger. I didn’t realise how big it was going to be. I had seen From Russia with Love and thought it was an awfully good film. It was exactly like going into The Avengers, you don’t have any idea what its future is.”

There was nearly a riot in Leicester Square at the premier when the crowd pushed the cinema’s plate glass window in. The film was hyped with gimmicks like a solid gold finger especially moulded for Blackman to wear.

“There’s no question that Sean Connery was the best Bond. Gert Frobe, who played Goldfinger, was lovely. The problem was that it was his first picture in English and he learned the language as we went along.”

My first scene with Gert at Goldfinger’s ranch, the director Guy Hamilton told us to rehearse. Gert had the first line and I thought, ‘Jesus, I’ve no idea what he’s saying, so I waited for his mouth to stop and then I said my line and so on. I mean, I was sitting next to him and couldn’t understand a word, so heaven help the audience. Ha-ha-ha!”

“I said to Guy, ‘Nobody will understand him,’ and he said, ‘Don’t worry darling, he’ll be dubbed,’ which I think was done by Charles Gray.

Honor goes on to talk about the apparent media shyness at the time when it came to mentioning the infamous Fleming name “Pussy Galore.”

“Initially the Americans would not let it in because of the character name of Pussy Galore. It wasn’t until they saw a newspaper with the headline ‘The Prince and the Pussy’, showing me talking to Prince Philip that they thought if the Prince can take it, we can do it. And that’s how it got in.”

This sends her into more peals of laughter. “All the names are metaphors for the characters, although it’s a bit naughty to say that, including Goldfinger and Oddjob.”

“Nobody considered it risqué here, but it upset an awful lot of TV presenters in America, some of them would not say it all when interviewing me. The fact that they can take it all so damn seriously is hilarious.”

She has never seen Goldfinger since that West End premier, adding: “Everyone keeps telling me it was a very good movie and they go on showing it forever. I only wish to God I got a penny or two every time it was shown. Wouldn’t that be lovely? I would be lying here in mink or some-thing.”

With thanks to The Daily News and icLiverpool, for the full interview, don’t hesitate to visit the site. Tickets for the concert tonight can be obtained through the ticket hotline (0151-709 3789).

  5. Tarantino's Bond Bid

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-10-05

While promoting his forthcoming film Kill Bill, director Quentin Tarantino told The New York Daily News how he would tackle one of the only Bond novels not to have an ‘official’ Eon treatment to date.

He told told them “Someday I’m going to get the rights to do Casino Royale, the first James Bond novel, and do it the right way. I really wanted it to be my followup to Pulp Fiction and do it with Pierce Brosnan, but have it take place after the events of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – after Bond’s wife, Tracy, has been killed.”

“I want Bond to be in mourning when he falls in love with Vesper Lynd, the woman in the novel. From what I know of Brosnan and read in interviews, I think he’d want to go in the direction I’d want to take Bond, though I’m not certain producers of the series would agree.”

This isn’t the only time Tarantino has expressed interest in being involved in a Bond film, the rumour mill had him apparently submit to Eon a script for a potential Bond film that Tony Scott would supposedly direct, Tarantino also has in the past put forward his wish to write/direct a film in a 60s style.

  6. 2004 Release Dates Set For Last Two Fleming Novels

    By johncox on 2003-10-02

Amazon.com is showing a March 2004 release date for Octopussy And The Living Daylights and an April 2004 release date for The Man With The Golden Gun. Why Penguin is waiting until 2004 to release these final two Fleming books is a mystery, but it’s nice to know the set will be completed. This will mark the first time in over 30 years that a single U.S. publisher has released all the Fleming books in a uniform set (Signet prevented this by holding onto the rights of the last three books). No word yet on a box set.

  7. Sean's Hands Go Down In History

By The CBn Team on 2003-09-30

Sean Connery has now joined the ranks with such stars as Bruce Willis and Tom Cruise, when he had his hands molded in plaster at his first West End premiere for a decade, this week.

While attending a screening for his new film, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, he added his addition to the famous hand memorial at London’s Leicester Square, and was thoroughly surprised by the crowd’s turnout.

Over 2,000 fan’s cheered on the seventy-three year old, and despite his experience and explosive popularity, the movie legend still had no idea he would draw this much attention. “It’s fantastic out there, but I wasn’t prepared for such an onslaught.”

Sir Sean is the second Bond to have his fingers in concrete, the first being current 007 actor, Pierce Brosnan.

  8. Jinx Movie Set for Nov 2004 Release

    By daniel on 2003-09-21

The spin-off film Jinx, featuring Halle Berry as the title character, is rumoured to be slated for a November 2004 release internationally. The film had originally been slated for a 2005 release date.

Currently under the working title of Jinx, the film has been in the early stages of production since the release of Die Another Day in November 2002. Various sources have, however, reported that Robert Wade and Neil Purvis have penned the script and that the film will move in to production early next year.

Filming is expected to start soon after Berry completes work on Catwoman, another spin-off film but in that instance from the Batman series.

Should the film be handled by Eon Productions, the production team behind the James Bond series, it is likely that the next Bond film, currently working under the title of Bond 21, will not reach theatres until late 2005.

  9. Bassey's Dresses Raise 250,000 Pounds

    By Tim Roth on 2003-09-20

As CommanderBond.net reported 8 days ago, dresses belonging to singing star Shirley Bassey have raised £250,000 for charities close to her heart.

Ms Bassey chose 50 of her show-stopping gowns for auction in London, and had hoped to raise around £50,000.

But such was the popularity of her show-stopping gowns that more than five times the amount was achieved.

It is understood the famous Welsh flag dress, worn at the official opening of the Millennium Stadium, was bought by the diva herself for £7,000.

A shimmering chiffon dress, which she wore to sing to US President John F Kennedy following his inauguration, sold for £6,500.

Ms Bassey attended the auction at Christie’s in person, to help boost the bidding.

Before the auctioning began, Dame Shirley told the roomful of millionaire guests and celebrities: "I am going to leave you with these words." She then broke into song to tumultuous applause and clapping with: "Hey big spender spend a little time with me."

Famous faces included broadcaster David Frost, fashion designer Isabelle Kristensen, rock star Bryan Adams, and the Aga Khan. The money will be split between the Dame Shirley Bassey scholarship and two concerns in her birthplace of Cardiff – the Royal Welsh College of Music and the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital appeal.

The sale on Thursday marked Ms Bassey’s 50 years in showbusiness – is a world away from her beginnings as an entertainer when she earned her living in a factory by day and singing in smoky clubs in Cardiff’s docklands by night.

The oldest piece up for sale was a 1955 sleeveless stage gown, known affectionately by Ms Bassey as "the diamond dress".

The outfit is encrusted with thousands of Swarovski aurora borealis crystals and weighs at an incredible 13lb (6kg).

Another of her favourites on sale is a black velvet gown with a three-dimensional orchid made from crystals.

The gold and silver sequinned and beaded gown associated with her first hit, the 1964 James Bond theme tune Goldfinger, is also in the auction.
