Running an exclusive Queensland showing at the Gold Coast Arts Centre from 11 September to 17 October is ‘Australians in Hollywood’, a travelling exhibition from Canberra’s National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the achievements of more than 80 Australian artists involved in the film industry, reaching back from the silent-era to more contemporary names. In addition to the more prominant Australian figures to be featured in the exhibit, are a number of lesser-profile faces who have left their own subtle, yet inimitable, stamp on the world of film and TV, including Australia’s one-time 007, George Lazenby.

Launched on Saturday 11 September 2004 by local Academy Award winner John Cox, the exhibition features over 100 pieces, as well as some rare movie memorabilia, including a very well-worn Oscar. As well as featuring the Goulburn-born Lazenby, ‘Australians in Hollywood’ also celebrates the acting work of Louise Lovely (silent-era actress, star of almost 60 films), Errol Flynn (The Adventures of Robin Hood), and more recently, Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings), Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under), Eric Bana (Hulk), Naomi Watts (The Ring) and Heath Ledger (Monster’s Ball). The exhibition also highlights the success of Australians behind the camera, including Peter Weir (The Truman Show), George Miller (Mad Max), Gillian Armstrong (Charlotte Gray) and Bruce Beresford (who directed Pierce Brosnan’s Evelyn, which was released on DVD in Australia for the first time today).

‘Australians in Hollywood’ runs until Sunday 17 October in Gallery One at the Gold Coast Arts Centre on Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise.

  5. A New Honour for Sir Roger…

    By Guest writer on 2004-09-16

    Marie-France Vienne

On September 15, the world-wide celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen in 2005 was presented at a major press conference at the British Library.

The press conference was presided over by HRH Crown Prince Frederik and HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. The conference was hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy in London and the British Library in association with the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation.

At the press conference, HRH Crown Prince Frederik appointed eight British public figures as Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors.

    The Ambassadors are:

    • Elizabeth Hurley, actress and model
    • Sir David Frost, tv host
    • Sir Derek Jacobi, actor
    • Michael Morpurgo, children’s book author
    • Dame Antonia S. Byatt, author
    • Sandi Toksvig, tv host and comedian
    • Jackie Wullschlager, writer

    …and…

    • Sir Roger Moore, actor

“Hans Christian Andersen created a magical world with his tales of Emperors, Kings, Princesses, birds, trains, toys, along with those of simple people and, of course, the unforgettable little match seller. Oh what a tragedy that 120 million children are denied access to a primary school education. They can and never will know the wonder of this great author, playwright and poet. It is a great honour for me to be a UNICEF Ambassador; and an equally great honour to now be a HCA Ambassador.”

  7. "Welcome to Japan, Mr. Bond"

    By johncox on 2004-09-13

    “Welcome to Japan, Mr. Bond.”

    – Tiger Tanaka, You Only Live Twice.

James Bond has a new home — finally.

After rumour reports last week that Time Warner had closed a deal to purchase MGM and the James Bond franchise, in a twist worthy of a Hollywood movie, Time Warner announced today that it was withdrawing its all-cash bid, and Sony Corp has agreed “in principle” to purchase MGM for $4.8 billion, ending a drama that started back in April when Sony first bid on the historic studio. MGM said its management will recommend the deal, which it called a “proposed merger,” to its board by Sept. 27.

Reports say Sony has agreed to pay $12 a share for the studio, which amounts to $2.94 billion. The deal also calls for Sony to assume about $1.9 billion in MGM debt. Sony, backed by Texas Pacific Group and Providence Equity Partners, raised its bid over the weekend, triggering Time Warner’s withdrawal. Key to Sony’s victory was the last minuet involvement of Comcast Corp., which put no money into the deal but agreed to package Sony and MGM content into a number of as-yet undetermined movie channels and video-on-demand offerings. Sony and Comcast announced that deal in a joint press release after news of the sale broke.

Sony is expected to fold MGM’s TV and film production units into Sony Pictures Entertainment. There will be a transition period to accommodate films in the MGM pipeline, but after 2005, that label and the roaring Lion will be put to rest.

    Variety 9/14/04

    Variety – 9/14/04

However, Variety reports that the James Bond franchise will be negotiated under a separate deal with the Broccoli family. The Variety report states that future Bond films will be handled by Sony, but will continue to be released under the MGM name. This means we will definitely see Leo the Lion giving his trademark roar in front of Bond 21 instead of the majestic “Columbia lady” which graces most Sony Pictures Entertainment productions (Sony Corp. bought Columbia Pictures in 1989 for $3.4 billion).

    And speaking of Bond 21

While MGM vice chairman Chris McGurk optimistically claimed Bond 21 was “ahead of schedule” back in April…it’s pretty clear now that the extended studio sale talks has set the film’s production back, or at least put a gag on official announcements regarding the project. With today’s news, one hopes Eon Productions are now free to release details on Bond 21, or at least put an end to the tidal wave of rumours. But it’s also conceivable that Bond’s new bosses will want to put their own stamp on the 40-year-old franchise first. Sony, after all, does have a curious history with 007.

In 1997, Sony announced it was going to produce a rival James Bond series utilizing rights acquired from Thunderball/Never Say Never Again producer Kevin McClory. MGM sued and prevailed in an out-of-court settlement which saw the studio awarded not only the disputed Thunderball rights (which included the use of Blofeld and SPECTRE), but also Columbia’s long-held rights to Casino Royale (elements of which are reportedly being used in Bond 21).

Sony transformed their Bond franchise concept into the Bond-bashing, extreme sport-loving xXx starring Vin Diesel (a sequel, xXx: State of the Union starring Ice Cube and directed by Die Another Day‘s Lee Tamahori, is set for release in 2005). But now it looks like Sony has finally realized their dreams of producing legitimate 007 movies.

Still unclear is whether any of MGM’s approximately 1,300 employees will survive the transition, including chairman and CEO Alex Yemenidjian and vice chairman/COO Chris McGurk.

This transaction marks the third time Kirk Kerkorian, who owns 74 percent of MGM (and tried unsuccessfully to merge it with Sony in 2001), has sold the studio.

  9. LEG007 Model 001 – The Lotus Sub

    By Evan Willnow on 2004-09-12

I was given my first LEGO® set the Christmas of 1968, a good three years before my first encounter with James Bond in the theatre. By the time I did see Diamonds Are Forever I had a quite nice LEGO collection—enough to build an alleyway, a red car, and a police car to recreate the famous stunt. Evan Willnow Through the early- to mid-Seventies each Bond film inspired a LEGO model; an elaborate boat chase scene for Live And Let Die, a flying car for The Man With The Golden Gun, a shuttle for Moonraker, and a rather unsatisfactory submarine car for The Spy Who Loved Me.

At the age of sixteen, I did what I would consider unthinkable at any other age, I sold my very large LEGO collection. What does a teenager need with building blocks? After four years I came to my senses and set out to rebuild the once grand LEGO collection and after twenty years of LEGO gifts for all birthdays and Christmases and some frivolous spending of my own, I have returned to building James Bond LEGO models. And now much more successfully than when I was young.

Lotus CarThis series of articles will feature my favourite LEGO Bond models, starting with what I consider a much better version of that submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me.

    The Model

Like many of my LEGO models, the Lotus Esprit Sub started with one part—the one part that I said, ‘Hey, this can be part of a…’ In this case, the part was the slope that serves as the Lotus’ bonnet. That piece determined the scale and from that I began to build.

    LEGO Lotus Esprit Model

    LEGO Lotus Esprit Model

Originally, I wanted to figure out how to make the Lotus’ wheels to retract and side fins to come out. I had pulled off a similar problem on a LEGO version of the Batmobile from Batman Returns, but because I was working on a smaller scale and had the need to replace the wheels with fins, I ended up building two replacable chassis—one with wheels, one with fins—with a simple sliding lock mechanism built into the car’s body to hold them in place.

    Lotus Car

    Lotus Car

With the bonnet’s angle determined by the large slope, getting the proper look and angle for the windscreen proved difficult; no slopes or stair-stepped bricks gave me the clean angle that was needed to get that distinctive ‘Lotus Esprit’ look. In the end, I used a common LEGO piece in an unorthodox way. I took a standard 4×6 black plate and simply wedged it between two pieces to achieve the proper angle.

    Lotus overhead

    Lotus overhead

Long after I had a complete model, I sat down to start working on this article. But something still bothered me about my LEGO Lotus—the pipes. Those little pipes that popped out of from beneath the rear licence plate and squirted black ooze on the bad guys windscreen. I didn’t like my solution for them. I had a small Technic brick that on one side had the plate and on the other side had the pipes. In order to make the pipes visible you had to remove the chassis, take of the Technic brick, turn it around, and then put the whole thing back together.

With that frustration, I tore my model apart and began attempting to build a better mechanism that fit in the very limited space available. Ten attempts later, I had pipes that popped out with the help of a LEGO rubber band when the licence plate was folded down. Exactly, what I wanted.

    The Instructions

    Instruction booklet

A note on the instruction book: It is not entirely obvious that car chassis does not fit into the car straight. It fits in at a very slight angle in a way that raises the back end of the car a small amount. This gives the the car a slicker looking profile.

A complete parts list can be found on the last page of the instruction booklet. Those wishing build the model, but are missing a few (or all) of the pieces should check out Brick Link, a fantastic website that lists nearly a thousand online stores around the world who all sell LEGO parts by the brick. With Brick Link, I was able to find the final piece of my Red Lotus from For Your Eyes Only. Now I just need to figure out a better ski rack for it.

  10. 'Young Bond' U.S. Publisher Faces Uncertain Future

    By johncox on 2004-09-12

In June Ian Fleming Publications proudly announced that Miramax Books (the publishing division of the Disney-owned film production powerhouse Miramax) would be publishing the first two Charlie Higson ‘Young Bond’ novels; SilverFin in spring 2005, and a second yet untitled ‘Young Bond’ novel in the fall.

    SilverFin cover art

    ‘SilverFin’ UK Cover Art

But an article in The New York Post now questions whether or not Miramax Books will still be around in 2005.

As first reported by The Post, Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein may be on the verge of a breakup with corporate parent, The Walt Disney Co. The question on the minds of publishing world—and no doubt Ian Fleming Publications—is if Weinstein goes and Miramax folds, what happens to the Miramax book business (and Mr. Young James Bond)?

The Post article goes on to report that Miramax executives are remaining silent on the subject, but industry sources suggest there are three basic scenarios for the 4-year-old book business.

Scenario 1: Weinstein breaks with Disney, goes off on his own, and neither erstwhile partner wants to keep the book business. Disney already has one publisher—Hyperion—after all. Weinstein, by all accounts a lover of the cachet of being a publisher, and fond of books head Jonathan Burnham, is nevertheless interested in focusing on filmmaking.

Scenario 2: Weinstein leaves Miramax, and the book division is folded into the Disney empire. Miramax Books already shares distribution and other back office duties with Disney, so, some say, this would be the most seamless transition. Naysayers suggest, however, that Jonathan Burnham would be unlikely to report to Bob Miller, head of Hyperion, and might not stay. And Burnham, almost as much as Weinstein himself, is Miramax books.

Scenario 3: Weinstein leaves Miramax and takes the book business with him, which after a rocky start, has been consistently profitable. It might be possible, also, that Weinstein’s new book entity would continue to make use of some of the Disney infrastructure, but not be owned by it.

The Post reports that industry insiders say the most likely scenario is the third scenario.

It’s interesting to note that the listing for SilverFin on Amazon.com — which had shown the publisher as Disney owned Hyperion Books for Children — was recently updated to show the publisher as just Miramax Books, suggesting “scenario 3” may already be in play.
