  1. Sean Connery is BACK as Bond!

By The CBn Team on 2005-03-18

Exciting news! Sean Connery is BACK as James Bond! At least his VOICE is back.

CBn has confirmed that Sean Connery WILL be providing the voice of 007 in the new James Bond videogame from Electronic Arts, James Bond 007: From Russia With Love.

Some voice work for the game has already been completed in Los Angeles. Connery will be recording the full voice track in the Caribbean during the next few weeks.

Game Informer magazine recently ran 10 pages of coverage of the new EA Bond game, including the first pictures. CLICK HERE for CBn’s full coverage of that article.

  2. 'Game Informer' Declassifies EA's 'From Russia With Love'

    By Guest writer on 2005-03-16

    Hold onto your joysticks everyone.

The April issue of Game Informer magazine (www.gameinformer.com) has blown the lid off EA’s new Bond game, James Bond 007: From Russia With Love, with a full 10 pages of exclusive coverage! The cover features a first look at Sean Connery’s CG image. Not bad.

Currently the magazine is only available to subscribers and is expected to hit newsstands in a matter of days. However, CBn’s own Jack Bauer has the magazine in hand and reports on the exciting details revealed inside:

    * The game follows the storyline of the film closely, but it will feature many elements of the early Bond days to recreate the feel of the era (thus, the jetpack).

    April 2005 issue

    Game Informer, April 2005

    * The cars will be from the 50s and 60s, gadgets will be bulkier, etc.

    * While they can’t get voice talent from many of the actors in the original film, as they’ve either retired or passed away, EA is planning on adding in additional content so they can get some big-named talent involved.

    * We get to see Bond duke it out on the Orient Express, take part in a high speed boat chase, and see a gypsy fight in one way or another (either playable, or a sequence).

    * While the final fight in the film revolves around Bond taking down Klebb and her boot knife, it doesn’t make for a very good boss battle, so there’ll be a lot more to it this time around.

    * Whereas Everything or Nothing had 2 different game engines, one for fighting and one for driving, From Russia With Love will run on one single engine so the transition between the two will be much smoother.

    * Much like the Grand Theft Auto games, Bond can “fire a few rounds from his Walther PPK, hop into an authentic ’60s car to strategically use the vehicle’s armor and weaponry, then hop out and keep going.” However, it won’t be like Grand Theft Autoin the sense that Bond has a mission that he must follow.

    The jetpack is back!

    The jetpack is back!

    * In many other games, there is one set path to success. In From Russia With Love, EA lets you choose your path. For example, if you find a motorcycle, you could take it and ride up the stairs, gunning down the opposition if they get in your way. Or, if you find a jetpack, fly up the stairs. They let you choose your way through.

    * There is a new mechanic called “Focus Mode”, which allows you the ability to slow down time to get a more accurate shot. It is supposed to take you into Bond’s mind, and what he’s thinking about, so you could shoot at an enemy’s specific body part, or something on him, like a radio or grenade.

    * Enemies now seem to work together to coordinate attacks against Bond. They’re a lot smarter than previous artificial-intelligence.

    * Also, guards will be different, now. Instead of facing a group of identical looking goons, you could face 10 different looking guys.

    * Like Metal Gear Solid, you can choose how you want to beat a level. If you want to go through it slowly and stealthily, you may. However, as the primary objective of a Bond game is to come out guns a-blazing, you could have shootouts with your foes, letting them know where you are.

    Sean Connery IS James Bond

    Sean Connery IS James Bond

    * There is a new gadget called the “Serum Gun”. A bar shows up on the screen letting you know how long the serum has until it goes into effect. The guard will go berserk, and kill everything around him, his allies included.

    * Daniela Bianchi’s likeness is in the game. Her character will assist Bond by pointing out shortcuts and doing other things.

    * Kerim Bay will also help out James, and even fellow MI6 members will help him out when needed.

    * Regarding the use of his image, GI quotes Sean Connery as saying, “As an artist, I see this as another way to explore the creative process. Video games are an extremely popular form of entertainment today, and I am looking forward to seeing how it all fits together.”

  3. 'SilverFin' is Bond Bestseller

    By johncox on 2005-03-16
    SilverFin bus advert

    Young Bondmania in the UK

SilverFin, the first in a series of five Young Bond novels by Charlie Higson, is swiftly climbing the UK bestsellers charts. With favorable reviews and a £50,000 promotional campaign by Puffin Books, it looks like Young Bond Book 1 is living up to expectations.

SilverFin is currently #11 on the fluid Amazon.co.uk list of bestsellers. On Play.com it’s #10. On a list of children’s bestsellers over at retailer WH Smith, SilverFin holds the 007th spot.

But the most exciting news is that the UK publishing trade magazine, The Bookseller, is expected to list SilverFin at #5 in the paperback children’s fiction chart this Friday!

Okay, now that the Young Bond series can be called a success, what news of Book 2?

Author Charlie Higson tells CBn Book 2 currently has the working title “Double M” and will be set largely in Sardinia (a locale seen in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me). It will involve art theft, bandits, and smuggling. Higson says it will be an even longer book than the 372 Page SilverFin.

Unfortunately, Book 2 is not coming out in Autumn as originally planned. Ian Fleming Publications confirmed the release is now January 2006 “at the earliest.” SilverFin first editions that show the release date of Book 2 as October 2005 are now hot sellers on eBay after CBn first reported the error earlier this month (the date has been corrected in a second printing).

SilverFin will be released in the U.S. on April 27 and in Australia in May. As yet, SilverFin is only available in English. SilverFin is currently the “Book of the Month” on the official Puffin website.

Read CBn’s exclusive interview with Charlie Higson, and keep watching CBn for all the latest news on the Young Bond series.

UPDATE: Friday, March 18, 2005. SilverFin did not reach the #5 spot on The Booksellers list of children’s paperback bestsellers as expected. It charted at #8. However, the book has moved up on the WH Smith bestseller list to #4.

  5. 'Royale' Revelations from Purvis & Wade

    By Matt Weston on 2005-03-14

Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have given a rather candid interview about their script for the 21st James Bond film, dropping some exciting details of what to expect come 2006.

In the interview with Screen International, relayed through Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!, Purvis and Wade have confirmed that Casino Royale will be a “very faithful adaption” of Fleming’s novel, although updated for a modern audience. Whilst fans have been aware of the fact that the new film will be based upon Casino Royale since July last year, the true extent of Casino Royale as a basis for the new script has never really been known (fan speculation has varied from a full-blown adaption of Fleming’s novel to a loose adaption, as Fleming’s Moonraker was to Die Another Day).

Purvis and Wade also confirmed what director Martin Campbell had been quoted as saying last month, in that Casino Royale will see 007 on one of his first missions, being forged into the secret agent we all know. “The book is the story of the incident that actually forges James Bond as a secret agent,” Wade said. “There is a James Bond that everyone knows, but it would be nice just once to show how he got there.”

Discussing Fleming’s novel, Wade remarked that the book “doesn’t have the global vista and it doesn’t have the level of action with which the cinematic Bonds have become synonymous with. We’ve opened it up but tried to keep the action fairly contained, and of realistic proportions. And everything that we’ve done that expands on the book is providing a modern context for what happens.” Wade also commented that updating the novel was their “sleight of hand” and that they “can’t make it as a period piece”.

The duo also confirmed that the most iconic elements of Fleming’s novel are in the current incarnation of the script, including the infamous torture sequence (“If it is done the right way, there are going to be a lot of crossed legs in the cinema,” said Wade) and Bond’s final line of dialogue. The writers also commented that the action in Casino Royale would also take a step back, featuring a more realistic style of violence and fewer quips from Bond.

And no Casino Royale interview would be complete without a bit of “next Bond” speculation, with Purvis weighing in on recasting cinema’s most enduring action hero. “Pierce Brosnan is a very, very hard act to follow, so you need something very different. You don’t want to have Pierce-lite.”

Head on over to Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang! for more of the interview, in which the writing team discuss Die Another Day, Jason Bourne and more.

Keep watching CBn for the latest news on Casino Royale.

  6. 'Casino Royale' First Edition Sells for 21,000 Pounds!

    By johncox on 2005-03-12

An inscribed first edition of Ian Fleming’s 1953 James Bond novel, Casino Royale, sold for £21,000 ($40,454 USD) as part of Bloomsbury Auctions Continental and English Literature and Modern First Editions sale held on February 24, 2005. The final sale was transacted after the auction had ended.

SOLD! The Casino Royale First Edition

SOLD! The Casino Royale first edition

This rare copy of the first Bond novel (basis for the next James Bond film) came from the private collection of Fleming’s great friend, bookseller Percy Muir. The book carries the unique inscription: “To Percy who guided my early steps in literature – but not down those dark corridors! Affectionately Ian.” Loosely inserted is a colour photograph of Fleming with ornithologist and author of Birds of the West Indies, James Bond (mistakenly identified by Bloomsbury as Terence James Bond, who is a different person entirely), whose name Fleming adapted for his iconic agent 007.

Fleming met Muir in the 1930s when he visited his bookshop and asked him to recommend and send books to him while he was studying at the University of Geneva. Some time later Fleming came to see him and announced that he had made £250 on the stock exchange and wanted to collect books that started something, such as the first book on zip fasteners. Muir persuaded Fleming to widen the scope of his collecting to include books and papers that changed the course of mankind. The collection grew swiftly until it numbered some 2000 pieces. The close friendship between the two men resulted in a varied and steady correspondence spanning many years.

At one point, Muir offered Fleming a first edition of Casino Royale for his collection, for which Fleming replied; “Naturally I would love to have the Casino Royale — very fragrant thought of yours. Incidentally I think it is the only Fleming first worth having as I think the first edition was only 3000 copies.” (The actual number was 4,750, although a great many of these were reserved for libraries.)

A group of letters relating to Fleming and Muir’s shared business activities at The Book Collector magazine (where Fleming was an enthusiastic though intermittent business partner) sold for £4,165 ($8,022 USD).

Also up for auction was a special signed limited edition of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, number 37 of only 250 copies, which sold for £4,760 ($9,168.27 USD). A regular first edition of that same novel, signed “To Birdie/From the same old beast!/x/Ian”, nabbed a surprising £3,332 ($6,417.91 USD). A first edition of Dr. No went for £524 ($1,009 USD).

Two Fleming related BBC radio transcripts from 1966, together with the Address given at Fleming’s Memorial Service, fetched £893 ($1,720 USD).

Bloomsbury Auctions is known for Modern First Editions and over the last few years has become the place to buy and sell Ian Fleming. Last November, Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang reported that a first edition of Ian Fleming’s novel From Russia With Love, once owned by Fleming’s friend Geoffrey Boothroyd (the model for gadget master “Q”), achieved a world record price for a Fleming first when it sold for £22,750 ($43,820 USD).

  7. Report From Station B

    By Guest writer on 2005-03-10

    written by John Surles

NASSAU, The Bahamas – I recently made a trip to Nassau to get rid of my winter blahs. Nassau holds a special interest for those of us Bond fans that believe Sean Connery is James Bond, and who will watch Sir Sean’s films over and over. Thunderball was filmed in and around Nassau, and for many of us Americans of modest means it became the first James Bond locale we were able to visit, in terms of affordability and safety.

I tracked down several sites from the Thunderball film, and I am afraid I must report that all is not well. While there is some good news that I will save for later, several of these treasured sites are being lost to weather, development and neglect.

I first visited the famous breakwater, where James Bond climbs out of the sea after being told by Domino of its location and it’s “keep away” status; it is also the launching point for Largo’s scuba team. The breakwater is located on the north shore of Paradise Island, and is part of the Atlantis Resort property, just to the west of the main pool area. The steps where Bond emerges from the water and walks under the concrete cover are easily accessible. The breakwater itself is suffering from deterioration due to erosion and the elements, and there is no evidence of maintenance of the structure. The bridge that spanned the canal in the movie is gone, having been replaced by a new, unremarkable structure. There is nothing on site that gives any hint of the location’s use in Thunderball.

    Station BStation B

Just to the west of the breakwater lies Paradise Beach, scene of the first meeting (above water) of Bond and Domino. They go ashore there, and Bond enjoys Domino’s company and some conch chowder at a seaside resort. Again, this beach is on the north side of Paradise Island and is located in front of the former Club Med property. I say former because the principal owner of the Atlantis Resort, Sol Kerzner, has purchased and closed down the Club Med site and some adjacent property leading up to Paradise Beach, fenced it off, put up “No Trespassing” signs, and cut down most of the trees. The road in, Casuarina Drive, has been closed and allows access only to construction workers and a couple of property owners who still have houses on the beach. The plans are to construct a huge hotel on-site, which will forever ruin the view of the beach for Bond fans.

    Station B

A few miles to the west of Nassau, along the continuation of West Bay Street, sits a house known locally as Rock Point, but is better known to Thunderball fans as Palmyra, Largo’s estate with the two pools. The house sits on the road but, because it is privately owned, is not open to the public. Parts of the house are visible from the adjacent beach. It appears that the house (including the shark pool) has suffered severe storm damage, and part of the seawall and structure are crumbling and falling into the sea. It is indeed a shame to see the residence of the evil SPECTRE Number Two suffer so, and I hope that repairs will be made by the property owner so that this film location continues to exist in a recognizable form.

    Station B

Continuing west along the same road, you will eventually come to the appropriately-named Love Beach, scene of Bond’s romantic liason with Domino and his telling her of her brother’s death at the hands of Largo. It is also where Bond shoots the spear gun at Vargas- “I think he got the point”. Unfortunately, Hurricane Floyd from a few years back wreaked havoc upon the beaches around this area of New Providence Island (upon which Nassau is located) and has made it impossible to identify the exact location along the beach that Bond first tasted a woman.

    Station B

There is, however, some good news to be found in this report from Station B. A special scene in Thunderball is the Kiss-Kiss Club, where Bond dances with Fiona Volpe. The actual site for this was the Cafe Martinique, located on the southern edge of Paradise Lagoon on Paradise Island. This club was demolished as part of the construction of the Royal Towers at the Atlantis Resort. I am happy to report the Atlantis Resort has announced that Cafe Martinique will be re-built along the southern portion of the property, in a style that will allegedly recreate the atmosphere of the legendary club. How faithful this new club will be to the old remains to be seen, but it is indeed good news to see an effort to bring it back. It is one of my personal regrets to have not seen the original Cafe Martinique on one of my earlier trips to Nassau.

It is exciting to be able to walk along Bay Street and still see some of the sights from the movie’s Junkanoo Parade, including the ‘Perfume Shop’ whose sign appears in several shots along the route. For readers of Ian Fleming’s novel, it is a treat to find locations from the book. One can almost visualize Domino shooting down Parliament Street in her sapphire blue MG, making a quick left onto Bay (although these days, this section of Bay Street is one-way in the opposite direction) and pulling up in front of ‘The Pipe of Peace’, still located where Mr. Fleming encountered it over forty years ago.

    Station BStation B

There are many more treasures from both the film and literary versions of Thunderball, as well as other Bond stories and films, to be seen in and around the capital city of The Bahamas; however, I was not able to convince my lovely wife to venture too far, and too often, from our British Colonial Hotel (mentioned at the end of ‘Quantum of Solace’ from the novel For Your Eyes Only, and now a Hilton Hotel, and site of Bond’s meeting with the water-skiing Fatima Blush in Never Say Never Again). So many Bond sites to see, so little time. I can confess that one of my dinners included an appetizer of caviar (unfortunately, not Beluga) and a medium-dry vodka martini, made with Russian or Polish vodka, shaken, not stirred, with a lemon twist. It was at this time that I resolved to return soon to Station B, and see some of the underwater film sites from several Bond films, and retrace more trips in and around Nassau from Ian Fleming’s wonderful novel. I also encourage you, the reader, to make a similar sight-seeing trip, whether to Nassau or elsewhere, to visit some of the Bond sites before they disappear. It is a great excuse to vacation in exotic locations and connect with your inner Bond.

    John SurlesThis concludes my report.

    Your faithful servant,
    JS

  8. Dench Confirms Jan/Feb '06 Start Date for 'Casino Royale'

    By johncox on 2005-03-10

Dame Judi Dench, who in October announced she would be reprising her role as James Bond’s boss “M” in Casino Royale, confirmed in an interview with Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2 that production on the 21st James Bond film is due to start in January or early February 2006. This start date would indicate a Winter 2006 or Spring 2007 release.

    Dame Judi Dench

    Dame Judi Dench

Director Martin Campbell is expected to start pre-production on the film immeaditly after wrapping work on Sony’s The Legend of Zorro in June.

News of Dench’s return comes as a bit of surprise to some Bond fans who assumed that because Casino Royale will feature James Bond in his very first mission (this according to Martin Campbell), a new “M” would be mandatory. After all, Dench’s “M” has quite a history with Pierce Brosnan’s 007.

Dench was clearly “the new M” in 1995’s GoldenEye who famously pegged 007 as a “sexist misogynist dinosaur” in their first meeting. She was later saved by 007 after being kidnapped by the evil Electra King in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough. The “M”/Bond drama continued with Die Another Day (2002) in which “M” disavows 007 after he’s been captured while on a mission in North Korea, bringing the two into personal conflict…again.

It may seem a little strange to now have Dench’s familiar “M” sitting across from a freshly minted 007. Nevertheless, Dench has become somewhat of a hallmark of the series and Eon seems reluctant to let go of this excellent actress and Oscar winner.

It’s not yet known which if any other regular MI6 staffers will return. John Cleese had reportedly been signed to a multi-picture contract as gadget-master “Q.” Samantha Bond, on the other hand, recently said she would not return as Miss Moneypenny if Pierce Brosnan was not 007.

Despite many rumours, CBn can confirm that NO decsion has yet been made as to who will play James Bond.

Keep watching CBn for all the latest news on Casino Royale.

  10. The Totally… James Bond CBn Interview

    By Matt Weston on 2005-03-09

    Matt Weston

Choosing a favourite James Bond theme song is a lot like choosing, well, a favourite James Bond. Just as fans spend hours verbally sparring over who the best 007 is, Bondophiles will equally defend their favourite Bond theme. Be it Nancy Sinatra’s sweeping “You Only Live Twice”, Garbage’s haunting “The World Is Not Enough”, Duran Duran’s upbeat “A View To A Kill” or Madonna’s controversial “Die Another Day”, the James Bond themes each have their fans and are one of the biggest talking points of each new Bond adventure. However, for many, it is Shirley Bassey, who performed a record three title themes, who immediately springs to mind whenever the words “James Bond theme song” are uttered.

CBn spoke with Joanne Farrell, who had the honour – and challenge! – of covering not one, but all three Shirley Bassey classics for last year’s Totally… James Bond album.

The Totally... James Bond CBn Interview

Q:Tell us a little about yourself.

JF:I’ve been a professional actress and singer since the age of sixteen, when I left home in Manchester to pursue a career in London. I’ve worked extensively on television and in London’s West End, as well as in bands and on recordings.

Q:How did you come to be involved on the album?

JF:Joanne FarrellSeveral years ago, I was involved in a theatre production where the Musical Director was Ian Hughes. In November 2003, I was backstage at Children In Need where purely by chance I happened to see Ian, who was the Musical Director for the evening. He told me he was working on the Totally… James Bond album and was looking for someone to sing the Shirley Bassey songs. He invited me over to his studio the next week, where we sang through the songs. He decided my voice was right for the tracks and we agreed to record them in early 2004.

Q:Tell us about the recording process.

JF:I recorded three sessions in total. We recorded “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever” in one morning. We recorded “Goldfinger” first as it’s a big song. We recorded “Moonraker” on another day and the backing vocals for some of the other tracks on another morning.

Q:Was it a conscious decision to have you cover all three of Shirley Bassey’s title songs?

JF:Yes. It made sense to have the same voice. In no way did I want to try to imitate Shirley Bassey, but just have a slight flavour of the style of the songs.

Q:Did you meet any of the other artists on the album, or attend any of their recordings?

JF:Yes. I’ve known Zoë Tyler (“For Your Eyes Only”, “All Time High”, “You Only Live Twice”) and Nicola Hughes (“GoldenEye”) for quite some time, so hanging out in the studio was a bit of a social event for us too!

Q:Were you given any marching orders in recording the song? For instance, were you told you could play with the vocals, or to stick to the original?

JF:It would be impossible to recreate what Shirley Bassey produces with these songs, so we decided to be a little flexible and allow me to bring some of my own style to them. It’s no use being a poor version of someone else, so I wanted to sing each song the way I felt it.

Q:Did you hear anything specific about what Shirley Bassey said about the songs that you considered before performing them?

JF:No. I’ve grown up listening to the songs, but never heard anything that was said about them. In a way I think it’s better sometimes to come to a piece, be it acting or singing, with your own fresh ideas. I guess it goes back to what I’ve already said about not wanting to be a lesser version of somebody else. I can’t be Shirley Bassey, but I can try to be the best I can be.

Q:Do you have a favourite of the three that you performed, and in turn, do you have a different one in mind when performed by Shirley Bassey?

JF:I love “Diamonds Are Forever”. I had the great pleasure of working with lyricist Don Black and performing this song in 2000, when I worked on a show celebrating Don’s music called Black Goes with Everything. He’s really cool!

I wasn’t too familiar with “Moonraker” but it really grew on me – it’s a
    beautiful song.

But when performed by Shirley Bassey, it has to be “Goldfinger”. It just
blows you away. So sexy and so powerful.

Q:Which of the three songs was the most challenging?

    JF:“Goldfinger”. It’s massive.

Totally... James Bond: The Essential 007 Themes

‘Totally… James Bond: The Essential 007 Themes’

Q:Were there any other 007 theme songs that you’d like to have performed?

JF:Ha! All of them! They’re all fantastic songs.

Q:Do you have a favourite James Bond song, out of them all?

    JF:I couldn’t possibly choose.

Q:Who would you like to perform the next title theme?

JF:Could you put in a good word for me?

Q:Tell us about your other musical pursuits.

JF:I’ve recorded tracks on several albums and I really enjoy it. I’d love
to work on more. Let’s see what the future holds.

    Q:Are you a 007 fan yourself?

    JF:Absolutely!

Q:Tell us about your non-Bond-related work.

JF:I work mainly as an actress. Last year I played fire-fighter Nicky Higgins in ITV’s new drama Steel River Blues about the Fire service. I also played Sarah-Jane Harvey in Crossroads and in dramas such as Cold Feet, Holby City, Waking the Dead, Heartbeat, Dream Team and lots more.

In the West End, I played Sandy in Grease, Stephanie in Saturday Night Fever, Ellie in Showboat, Janet in The Rocky Horror Show, and in Smokey Joes Café, to name but a few.

I love having the opportunity to work in a variety of fields.
