‘… wake me up when September ends.’
I actually wanted to use this line right after putting the last full stop under the August version of our new thingy (and I see only now I didn’t put a full stop there either; well, can’t be helped). And now I was close to missing the beginning of October for real. Happens…

Prompted mostly into doing this at the expense of more meaningful pursuits and good works, herewith the fifth of this thunderously self-indulgent series of ludicrous moments and the same old jokes. The others you’ll find on your DVD shelf.
No, that isn’t really quite fair.

here, here, here and here.
Better. Still, the fifth one of any sort of ongoing fictional enterprise must present some sort of challenge to those who will administer it unto us. By this stage, the stock characters are established and may well have developed into “favourites”, for good or ill. The general beats of the entertainment have emerged, and these must be worth maintaining to ensure people keep coming back to enjoy more of it. However, there’s going to be a risk that you just bask in the transient popularity, go over the same stuff again and instead of bothering to test the expectations you yourself have created, you just reproduce your previous claptrap, to diminishing returns. The particular danger is that the audience, the audience that you thought you would be pleasing by capitulating to their lack of creativity, will turn on you for yours, making them pay (in both money and time and fleeting relationships) to sit through the same old guff again. Too much change, however, and you will have raped their childhood, or something. The ungrateful swine. Too many film series and television programmes to mention; none of which, I hasten to add, have lasted fifty years.

Radio Times yesterday reported Charlie Higson, renown comedian and Young Bond author, penned the screenplay to ITV1’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s ‘A Caribbean Mystery’. And while at it has taken the chance for a little private fun of his own. Higson included a minor cameo role for himself: a certain ornithologist called Bond, James Bond. This little wink is fitting in more than just one regard, after all Agatha Christie in fact introduced a character called “James Bond” as early as 1934 in her story ‘The Rajah’s Emerald’ – although very definitely not the James Bond Fleming had in mind nearly twenty years later when he borrowed the real ornithologist’s name for ‘Casino Royale’.
‘A Caribbean Mystery’, which follows Miss Marple’s investigation of a murder on the island of St Honore, will be broadcast by ITV1 in 2013. Director is Charlie Palmer, know for his work at ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Death in Paradise’.
Here is the Radio Times story and here the discussion thread for this news.
Thanks to CBn forum member ‘marktmurphy’ for the tip. And to CBn’s ‘zencat’ for the nudge.
