  1. 20 Years Ago: Timothy Dalton Is Announced As James Bond 007

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-06

It was twenty years ago on 6 August 1986 that Timothy Dalton was announced as the fourth official James Bond 007 actor. The event was later announced at a press conference in Vienna, Austria.

Dalton’s longtime association with the James Bond film series began in the 60’s when he was asked to take on the role after Sean Connery temporarily left after 1967’s You Only Live Twice. However, Dalton turned it down, feeling he was too young for the part (at that time 22 years old). He was also considered in 1971 and 1981.

Dalton was again considered as a replacement after the Sir Roger Moore era ended, but he initially turned it down, due to working/schedule complications with the film, Brenda Starr. With Pierce Brosnan pulling out due to NBC’s Remington Steele, Dalton finally took on the role.

His first James Bond film, The Living Daylights, premiered on 29 June 1987; the year also celebrating 25 years of 007 films. With a worldwide box-office of over $191.2 million dollars, The Living Daylights became one of the most successful James Bond films of the 1980s.

Dalton again returned to the role for a second—and last—time in 1989’s Licence To Kill. Opening on 13 June 1989, the film faced harsh competition (Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and more…). The film grossed $156.2 million worldwide.

A third James Bond film featuring Timothy Dalton was set to be released sometime in 1991, but due to legal problems and complications, the film never saw the light of day. Dalton officially resigned from the James Bond 007 role on 12 April 1994.

  7. Activision's Debut Bond Game to Coincide with 'Bond 22'

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-04

Since Activision was granted the rights to the James Bond 007 video games, news has been relatively silent in the Bond game world. According to a new report from GameSpot, it will remain fairly quiet for quite some time.

The next James Bond game, and the first from Activision, is not planned to be released until May of 2008 – to tie in with the release of Bond 22 (which will be released on the 2nd of that month). ‘MGM has announced the release date for the next Bond movie following this holiday for May of 2008… That is where we would focus to have our first [Bond] game,’ said Bobby Kotick, chairman and CEO of Activision.

CBn previously reported that this first game from Activision was expected to be a Bond 22 tie-in (as well as the cancellation of EA’s Casino Royale), and this appears to be the case so far.

  8. Chris Cornell On Casino Royale's 'You Know My Name'

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-03

Chris Cornell has previously spoken about the Casino Royale main title song, ‘You Know My Name’ to MTV. Further news on this James Bond theme has been revealed, thanks to Billboard.com

Upon being asked for the job, Cornell said: ‘I just got a call, and at first I thought there must be some kind of mistake… Everybody I met with said the same thing — ‘This isn’t anything like any other James Bond film, so we don’t really want that song, either. So go do whatever you want.’

He later said that ‘You Know My Name’ will be quite a change from some of the recent 007 title themes, calling it: ‘more uptempo and a little more aggressive than any other Bond theme has been, maybe since Paul McCartney [Live And Let Die]. It has an orchestra, but it also has some angry sounding guitar, and it’s got feedback.

  9. 'From Russia With Love:' The Jump Cut

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-03

In light of the release of the James Bond 007 ‘Ultimate Edition’ DVDs, the ending gondola scene of 1963’s From Russia With Love has gone under the microscope once more with some interesting results in regards to cuts and censorship.

In an article titled ‘The British Censorship of From Russia With Love’ on the website DVD Talk, Glenn Erickson looks at the film’s editing including the mysterious ‘bad edit’ in the gondola in the film’s final scene.

DVD Talk originally looked at the gondola scene’s cut article in 1997. That article descibed the cut as follow:

In the final scene of From Russia With Love Sean Connery and Daniela Bianchi are blithely Gondoliering on a Venetian canal (okay, okay, in front of a rear-projection of a Venetian canal) when Connery produces the 8mm roll of blackmail film taken by SMERSH in the Istanbul bridal suite. He holds the reel up to examine a length of it against the sunlight, and says. “He was right, you know.” Before Bianchi can answer, there is a really obvious cut. A new angle pops on with the actors in different positions and the dialog proceeds as if something substantial has been cut out. Matt Munro has been singing the title song in the background; the lyric jumps forward a few notes, indicating that maybe two or three seconds of film are missing.

The ’97 article asked for help explaining the cut and received two replies at the time. One was from Dale McFadzean, a member of the James Bond 007 International Fan Club. Dale wrote:

“…In the original edit of the scene, Sean Connery holds up the film and says, “He was right you know – what a performance!”, referring to his and Tatiana’s sexual exploits in the hotel. At the time it was thought that this piece of dialogue was a bit risque; and so it was cut. This is why there is a jump of a few seconds in the final scene.”

That is where it stood until DVD Talk was contacted by Gavin Salkeld who had researched From Russia With Love’s files of the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC made From Russia With Love ‘the target of some pretty stringent censorship’. Gavin had found two key points that explain the cut which it turns out referred to another cut line.

    The earlier cut was this:

(From a list of 13 BBFC cuts)

    • 10) – Killer Red Grant (Robert Shaw) gets the drop on Bond in his compartment on the Orient Express. Grant’s remark “What a performance!” when he throws the compromising 8mm film reel at Bond is removed.

And the famous gondola scene cut:

    • 13) – Bond’s repeat of Red Grant’s quip, “What a performance!” as he examines the film reel in the Gondola, has been cut.

DVD Talk goes on to say, ‘Just to be clear, there is NO uncut version of this anywhere in the world.. From Russia With Love was quite an erotic film when new, and it’s interesting to know just how badly the censors beat it up.’

Great work by DVD Talk’s Glenn Erickson and by Gavin Salkeld who uncovered the BBFC’s files solving another great Bond mystery. One still wonders why this cut was made so poorly, but now at least we know.

Be sure to read DVD Talk’s entire From Russia With Love article which includes the complete 13 point BBFC cut list.
