  1. Marc Forster: A Different Style For James Bond

Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster has just given a new interview to MSN Movies UK, where he discusses editing, action sequences, on-set accidents, the upcoming teaser trailer and a new style for the 22nd James Bond adventure.

‘We wrapped the film around a week ago and now I’m in post-production and have started the editing process,’ Forster said. ‘We have four weeks to cut the film, then we have a preview, and then two more weeks and then we lock pictures. It’s a very tight schedule’.

As previously stated, Forster is aiming for a leaner 007 film by having Quantum of Solace run at ‘just under two hours’. In the past, Tomorrow Never Dies was the first Bond film since the 1960’s to have a run time under the two-hour mark. On the flip side, Daniel Craig’s debut in Picture: Daniel Craig

Stylistically, [Quantum of Solace] will be very different,’ Forster continued. ‘I approached the film very differently and it’s going in a different direction. There was more action in Casino Royale, but my goal was to bring it back to the 60s and early 70s. I was always inspired by the early Bond films–Dr. No, Goldfinger–and the sets designed by Ken Adam. I want to go back to the feel of the old set designs, which were incredibly interesting and ahead of their time. I felt the look of the Bond franchise was a little bit neglected in the last decade–to make a more stylish Bond is a little more interesting.’

When the ‘twice as much’ action question came up, Forster briefly described some of the standout sequences that fans could expect to see in the film: ‘There’s an airplane sequence that’s a real cat-and-mouse game,’ he said. ‘I think it’s really breathtaking and a lot of fun. Another scene is the finale of a foot chase in Vienna during which they crash into a cathedral and there’s a fight. I really like that sequence; I feel I haven’t seen it in any film before.’

And what about the teaser trailer everyone is eagerly awaiting?

‘It’s a teaser and I’m really happy with it. Even in a minute and a half, I think it captures the essence and the feel of the movie. I feel great about it and I have a really good feeling about the movie. I hope audiences will enjoy it as well.’

Only a matter of days until 007 fans around the world get to experience it…

  • 'The Battle For Bond' Second Edition Now Available

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-25

As reported earlier this year, a second edition of Robert Sellers’ The Battle For Bond, was set for release this June in the UK. The book has now been released and can be ordered online at Amazon.co.uk.

Initially banned by the Ian Fleming Will Trust this past February for its alleged use of copyrighted material, this new second edition removes the images of the various correspondence during the Thunderball trial (many of which had never before been published).

Due to the removal of several images (and thus a lower page count), this second edition of The Battle For Bond retails for a much more affordable £9.99. It also includes a brand new introduction by spy novelist Len Deighton, who was involved with the Kevin McClory-Sean Connery James Bond script in the late 1970s.

    The official blurb follows:

In 1963, Ian Fleming, the creator of the 20th century s greatest fictional character was in court, accused of plagiarism. The screen version of James Bond was not Fleming’s creation. It was the creation of Jack Whittingham, who was employed by maverick producer Kevin McClory to adapt the character to the big screen. Had this screen character never been developed, James Bond might have been just another minor fictional spy character. The Battle For Bond is a tale of bitter recriminations, betrayal, multi-million dollar lawsuits and even death. It is the fabled story of Kevin McClory’s 40 year legal battle over the rights to the screen version of James Bond, which he and Whittingham had created. The first edition of this book was banned by the Ian Fleming Will Trust. But the truth never dies! This second edition features a new foreword by Len Deighton.

A brilliant page-turner with all the qualities of a thriller, this is easily the best film book of the year. –Film Review

Robert Sellers dedication and thorough investigation into this Bond story results in a book that is a must for any serious fan of the franchise. –Cinema Retro Magazine

  • 'Goldfinger' Golf Day Marks Ian Fleming Centenary

Ian Fleming’s family is hosting a charity golf event today as yet another way to mark the James Bond creator’s centenary.

First announced this past January, the Goldfinger golf tournament takes place at the Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, where Fleming was once a member. The BBC News reports that funds from the charity event will go towards the British Heart Foundation.

The course, under the name Royal St Mark’s, was the site of the first confrontation between Bond and Auric Goldfinger in the author’s seventh 007 adventure in 1959.

Lucy Fleming said: ‘In the book, Ian devoted at least three chapters to a game of golf which is fascinating even if you are not a golfer because of it’s minute detail. He called it Royal St Mark’s but he sort of described each hole and people are very familiar with it.’

‘He had a pro who played with him called Cyril [Fred] Whiting and in the book he is called Cyril [Alfred] Blacking.’

Sara Jane Woods, of the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘We were approached by the Fleming family and there was such a wonderful synergy because Ian very sadly died of heart disease very early and obviously had he lived he would have been 100 this year. We were very lucky that the Fleming family felt that they would like to do this event in memory of Ian.’

She added: ‘Heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK and we spend about £70 million on research which has enabled us to produce things like statins [cholesterol-lowing drugs] which today could have possibly helped Ian had they been around at the time he was ill.’

The golf tournament will host 21 teams named after characters from the books with a charity auction hosted by Fleming’s nephew to follow afterwards. One of the prizes from the event is a private viewing of the 22nd Bond film, Quantum of Solace, a day before its world premiere with the Fleming family.

Dame Judi Dench, or ‘M’ to the James Bond fans, has been given an honorary degree at a university in Scotland–reports the BBC News.

Dame Judi was honoured at St. Andrews University, Scotland’s oldest university, for her work on the stage and screen.

The actress stated she was surprised, but delighted to be made a doctor of letters.

‘I had never been to St. Andrews before, so I’m very pleased and I’m going to boast about it a lot,’ she said after the ceremony.

‘It was very embarrassing, you know. You see a photograph of yourself and that’s embarrassing and then you have to stand up in front of a lot of people while someone says the whole of your life to you.’

‘But it is a huge day of celebration and I’m frightfully pleased to have been asked.’

Dame Judi was honoured alongside Dr. Simon Fraser Campbell, a chemist credited with leading a team to discover the drug Viagra along with several other medicines.

Graduates in the audience laughed as Professor Lorna Hutson of the University’s School of English reeled off a lengthy list of Dame Judi’s many accolades, which include her Oscar-winning performance in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love.

The upcoming Quantum of Solace will mark her sixth James Bond film.
