  2. Swatch Introduces The 007 Villain Collection

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-05

While Omega might be James Bond’s watch of choice, Swiss watch company Swatch is catering it’s newest line–the 007 Villain Collection–to fans of the numerous Bond baddies.

    The official press release follows:

    Dr. Swatch Plays Bad Guy
    to Bond, James Bond

Has Swatch gone over to the other side? In a surprising and provocative move, the mischievous maker of Swiss fashion watches has aligned itself with the enemies of the world’s most famous gentleman spy. “We’ve discovered the dark side of the myth,” said Nicolas G. Hayek, also nicknamed Dr. Swatch. “And we love it. It’s absolutely fascinating.” To avoid any possible misunderstandings, the notorious inspirator of the plastic Swiss watch hastened to explain his intentions: “James Bond would not exist in Ian Fleming’s novels and all the Bond films if strong, powerful villains were not also there. The villains and their henchmen play a crucial role. And if Bond is alive and well today, it is thanks in no small part to the inspiration and enduring power of his enemies.

Indeed, the fascination with Bond’s adversaries has inspired an entirely new collection, due for release in early September. The Swatch 007 Villain Collection is a tribute to the entertaining villains who light up the dark side of twenty-two James Bond films, from Dr. No to the forthcoming Quantum Of Solace.

The Swatch 007 Villain Collection evokes the most memorable of Bond’s adversaries. Who can forget these outlaw heroes, armed to the teeth and dressed to kill? From stylish Dr. No with his metal hands to Oddjob and his deadly bowler, they’re villains Bond fans love to hate.

Swatch is no stranger to special outlaws, in sports for example, and their borderline behavior. The brand is a prominent supporter of outstanding athletes and performers in the special “outlaw” free-style disciplines that test the limits of the sporting experience. From Geraldine Fasnacht to Mat Rebeaud, free-style skiers, X-boarders and free runners, Swatch embraces all special “outlaw” performers.

The Swatch 007 Villain Collection pays tribute to outstanding outlaw actors, too: Christopher Walken’s malevolent Max Zorin deserves his stylish Retrograde; Gerd Froebe’s Goldfinger gets a massive, golden Irony THE Chrono; Lotte Lenya’s Rosa Klebb wields a pair of knuckle-dusters welded to an Irony Lady. And in homage to Casino Royale, poker-faced master of malice Mads Mikkelsen (alias Le Chiffre) takes an Irony Big with an Ace of Spades. There’s more, of course, but the curtain won’t rise on the Villains for another few weeks…

Wrapping up his comments with a mischievous smile, Nicolas Hayek, founder and head of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watchmaking group, put on his corporate hat: “OMEGA is James Bond’s watch of choice, but real, interesting villains prefer Swatch.”

  4. New Release Dates For Ian Fleming's 'Quantum of Solace' and 'My Name's Bond, James Bond'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-03
    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

In early July, CommanderBond.net reported that October 2008 would see the book release of Ian Fleming’s Quantum of Solace in the UK.

While the title is absent of any descriptive blurb, it is a likely bet that this will be almost identical to the recently released Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories collection, considering both of these run at 304 pages (Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories collects together the nine short stories that make up the For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy & The Living Daylights collections).

Originally scheduled for a 30 October release, the title is now slated for 2 October. Quantum of Solace will be released in hardback and paperback in the UK, retailing for £20.00 and £6.99, respectively.

In addition, it has been revealed that James Bond: The Man and His World author Henry Chancellor will provide an introduction to this upcoming edition.

In related news, the UK release of the new edition of Simon Winder’s ‘My Name’s Bond, James Bond’ has been pulled forward to 2 October as well.

Retailing for £6.99, the book is a celebration of ‘the greatest of all postwar British fictional icons’…

‘She looked sharply up at him. ‘And who might you be?’

    ‘My name’s Bond, James Bond’.

This book celebrates the greatest of all post-war British fictional icons. For too long the films of the Bond novels have overshadowed their literary source–the bizarre, baroque imagination of Ian Fleming. Full rein is given in this anthology to Fleming’s wonderful creations–the magically deranged villains, their appalling sidekicks and their surreal lairs, from Dr No’s guano island to Blofeld’s Garden of Death. Fleming emerges too from this book as a remarkable writer on nature (albeit nature of a purely malevolent variety) and as an inventor of extraordinarily imagined set pieces–the source of the films’ enormous successes.

  6. 'Ken Adam Designs The Movies: James Bond And Beyond'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-03

Back in May of this year, CommanderBond.net first alerted readers that a brand new book entitled Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond would be released in September.

Adam, who served as production designer on seven of the 007 films–Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker–is well remembered by Bond fans for creating some of the most majestic sets to ever grace the series.

A brand new blurb has been released giving readers a taste of Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond:

Showcasing the work of Ken Adam, the man who created some of the most iconic and memorable sets in the history of the movies.

Ken Adam is the most distinguished living production designer in the world. His work spans seven decades and more than seventy-five movies, from his revolutionary designs for the first seven James Bond movies to work on Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Alan Bennett’s The Madness of King George, for both of which he won an Oscar.

Born in Germany, Adam trained in London as an architect, and his first Art Director credit was on Around the World in Eighty Days in 1956. He has subsequently worked in Hollywood, Italy, and Germany as well as Britain.

Ken Adam’s extensive personal archive of concept sketches, drawings, set stills, and photographs from every stage of his career forms the basis of this book. Using case studies from the 1950s to the present day, it shows the whole cycle of his production designs, from initial concept to what appears on the screen itself. The result encapsulates the evolving role of the Art Director and Production Designer from the golden age of the big studios to the digital fantasies of the early twenty-first century.

The commentary is by Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art, London, Chairman of the Arts Council, England, Chairman of the UK’s Design Council, and a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum. 250 illustrations, 180 in color.

This book is the second collaboration between Adam and author Christopher Frayling. The two previously worked together on 2005’s Ken Adam: The Art of Production Design.

Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond will be released on 29 September in the UK and 27 November in the US; retailing for £32.00 and $65.00, respectively. Pre-order links follow below.

  7. Activision Delivering Action In 'Quantum of Solace' Game

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-02

ComputerAndVideoGames.com got a chance to play a demo version of Activision’s forthcoming James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, and have posted a brand new preview of what is in store for 007 gamers.

Apparently, action is the key word, if this report is anything to go by. ‘It’s a first-class shooter in a Bond wrapper,’ said Quantum of Solace executive producer Garret Young.

One specific comparison from film-to-game was a section where James Bond comes across a meeting between Casino Royale‘s Le Chiffre and Steven Obanno. While a brutal stair fight involving Bond, Obanno and his henchman occurs in the film around this sequence, the game however takes a different stance:

‘Bond blasts his way from corridor to corridor, through a spa room and into a large open ballroom. I counted over 60 henchman, that’s 58 more than in the movie. This isn’t quiet. This is explosive gunning–Call of Duty 4 style.’

Head over to ComputerAndVideoGames.com to check out the entire report on the development of Quantum of Solace.
