  3. First 'Quantum of Solace' Review Online

    By Matt Weston on 2008-09-25

The world premiere is still over a month away, but British tabloid The Sun claims to have landed the first review of Daniel Craig’s second James Bond outing, Quantum of Solace.

    The alleged verdict? Very positive.

While The Sun claims that the picture might not be as groundbreaking as 2006’s Casino Royale, it will nevertheless “kick the living daylights out of any rival action-hero franchises.”

The newspaper was one of the first media outlets to claim to review Casino Royale.

Spoilers abound in the complete Quantum of Solace review on The Sun‘s website.

Quantum of Solace hits UK cinemas on 31 October and North American theatres on 14 November. In the meantime, keep your web browsers locked on CommanderBond.net for the latest, breaking James Bond news.

Limited edition glass bottle launched to celebrate the release of the hotly anticipated new Bond movie – ‘Quantum of Solace’

‘Coca-Cola Zero’ gives new meaning to the term Zero Zero 7 as it launches a limited edition bottle to celebrate the release of the twenty second Bond film, Quantum of Solace. The nations own ‘bloke coke’ has been dressed to thrill with its very own special design Quantum of Solace bottle available exclusively at Harrods as a part of its Bond promotion (RRP £1.50 for 330ml).

The Bond bottle is set to be the ultimate men’s accessory this autumn, adding a debonair touch to any man-about-town’s look without having to don a tux! The sleek black design mirrors the edgier portrayal of Bond that Daniel Craig has brought to the role as the sixth actor to play James Bond.

The design of the bottle draws inspiration from the iconic James Bond gun barrel sequence, which has opened every Bond movie since the franchise began in 1962. The design features the infamous gun barrel, along with the trademark pose of Bond with gun-in-hand, plus sexy silhouettes of Bond girls which will leave blokes both shaken and stirred!

This bottle will prove to be a must-have collectable for any bloke or Bond fan.

Bobby Brittain, Brand Director, Coca-Cola Great Britain explains: “This is an amazing opportunity to be part of the phenomenon that is James Bond. Our iconic glass bottle for ‘Coke Zero’ lends itself perfectly to a Bond style accessory, the infamous curves of the bottle are the perfect complement to the legendary Bond imagery and a fitting way to mark the release of the film.”

The launch of the limited edition glass bottle celebrates the announcement that Coca-Cola Great Britain has teamed up its ‘Coca-Cola Zero’ brand with Sony Entertainment and the biggest franchise in motion picture history, James Bond 007. This is the first major collaboration for the ‘Coca-Cola Zero’ brand on an international stage since its successful launch around the world in 2006.

    For more information visit www.coca-cola.co.uk.

The ‘James Bond Coke Zero’ limited edition bottle is available from Harrods, London, from late October 2008 and is priced at £1.50.

  6. 'Ken Adam Designs The Movies: James Bond And Beyond' Now Available

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-25

Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond is now shipping from both Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.

The book, which CommanderBond.net first reported on in May of this year, centers on the highly praised and well known work of production designer Ken Adam.

Adam, who served as production designer on seven of the 007 films–Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker–is well remembered by Bond fans for creating some of the most majestic sets to ever grace the series.

The offical descriptive Ken Adam Designs the Movies: James Bond and Beyond blurb follows:

Showcasing the work of Ken Adam, the man who created some of the most iconic and memorable sets in the history of the movies.

Ken Adam is the most distinguished living production designer in the world. His work spans seven decades and more than seventy-five movies, from his revolutionary designs for the first seven James Bond movies to work on Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Alan Bennett’s The Madness of King George, for both of which he won an Oscar.

Born in Germany, Adam trained in London as an architect, and his first Art Director credit was on Around the World in Eighty Days in 1956. He has subsequently worked in Hollywood, Italy, and Germany as well as Britain.

Ken Adam’s extensive personal archive of concept sketches, drawings, set stills, and photographs from every stage of his career forms the basis of this book. Using case studies from the 1950s to the present day, it shows the whole cycle of his production designs, from initial concept to what appears on the screen itself. The result encapsulates the evolving role of the Art Director and Production Designer from the golden age of the big studios to the digital fantasies of the early twenty-first century.

The commentary is by Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art, London, Chairman of the Arts Council, England, Chairman of the UK’s Design Council, and a Trustee of the Victoria & Albert Museum. 250 illustrations, 180 in color.

This book is the second collaboration between Adam and author Christopher Frayling. The two previously worked together on 2005’s Ken Adam: The Art of Production Design.

The book will be available in UK bookstores on 29 September. And despite having a scheduled US release date of 27 November, fans on both sides of the pond can get their copy online now. Retail price is £32.00 and $65.00, respectively. Pre-order links follow below.

  8. On The Set Of 'Quantum of Solace'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-24

Premiere.com has been updated with an all-new collection of interviews with the director and principal cast members of the 22nd James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

Originally conducted this past May while the 007 production was filming at Lake Constance in Bregenz, Austria, these newly posted interviews feature discussions with Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Marc Forster and Bond himself, Daniel Craig.

    Daniel Craig

‘I think there’s probably more pressure this time,’ Craig starts things off with, ‘but I’m just trying to apply the same rules as I did last time. And hopefully that’ll work out, that you make the best movie you can. Certainly, we couldn’t repeat what we did last time. It’d be nice to be able to repeat the success, but we couldn’t repeat the film so we’re into a new way of thinking.’

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

When asked if this new way of thinking reflected in the hiring of Swiss director Marc Forster to helm the 22nd instalment, Craig said he jumped at the opportunity when it arose.

He said: ‘We’d started something in Casino Royale but we had a book to work from, and we adhered quite closely, emotionally, with that story. Now we want to continue this story, but we have to make it different. So when Marc’s name came up, I jumped at it because I want the audience to be attached, I want the audience to be pulled in and get involved with the characters.’

Craig was also questioned on a recent comment at the time made by Jesper Christensen (who plays the rather nasty Mr. White), calling his Bond ‘slightly dumb’.

‘Dumb? That’s what I like about him, is that it’s shoot first and ask questions later,’ he replied ‘But I take that from the books; that was always Ian Fleming’s image of Bond. It was always, kick the door in, see what happens. If he’s standing on top of a tall building, there’s a 20-foot gap, he can’t see what’s down below–he jumps. And if he hurts himself, he hurts himself. The chances are he won’t hurt himself, and therefore he’ll move on. And if that’s dumb…’

    Olga Kurylenko

Playing an equally important role in Quantum of Solace is Olga Kurylenko as the independent and revenge-driven Camille.

After Eva Green’s enigmatic portrayal of Vesper Lynd in 2006’s Casino Royale struck the right chord with many fans and critics, the pressure was definitely on to get the right actress for this role.

Speaking about the audition process, Kurylenko said: ‘After I got the role, Marc [Forster] said, “So, tell me one thing. How come you were so calm at the audition?” I [said], “What do you mean?” He said, “Well, the other girls, they came in and they were freaking out. And you came in and I said, ‘Wow, she just doesn’t give a shit, she’s so cool.'” I said, “I was freaking out!” I was nervous but I also said to myself, if I was going to show that I’m nervous, I would not get the part. You have to take yourself in hand.’

    Olga Kurylenko is Camille

    Olga Kurylenko is Camille

The Ukranian actress described Camille’s background as quite tough. ‘Everything she is doing in the movie is because she is driven by everything that happened to her in the past,’ she stated. ‘That’s quite vague, but you know what I mean. Definitely she had tough things happening in her youth.’

And her favourite Bond girl from the series? ‘Michelle Yeoh [from Tomorrow Never Dies] was good because she did the fight scenes by herself, so I think that’s pretty impressive. Because I do that in this movie, I rewatched that movie to see how she did it.’

    Mathieu Amalric

When asked how he compared Dominic Greene to the past villains of the series, the French actor said it was more important to focus on the connection of events between Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale.

    Mathieu Amalric is Dominic Greene

    Mathieu Amalric is Dominic Greene

‘I was so scared that I prefer not to watch the old Bond films again because if I watch them, I would have just said, “Okay, I can’t do that.” The villains often are amazing: [Christopher] Walken, [Klaus Maria] Brandauer, Curt Jurgens, Christopher Lee, Jonathan Pryce. So I prefer to forget all that and try to focus more on Casino Royale and this one, because it’s a sequel–you have James Bond that wants to understand why this woman committed suicide in front of his eyes and betrayed him. Bond has sort of a broken heart, no?’

Amalric also said he enjoyed the challenge of performing in a role where there are so many expectations by the fans. ‘If it’s not hard, it’s not fun,’ he said.

Each time it’s hard, even in a small independent French film. Because you have to surprise yourself. I have lots of ways of being surprised in this film. The practice of the stunts, to try to work out this fight and maybe it would be more interesting if the bad guy doesn’t know how to fight. Because why should I know kung fu? He’s just a guy that works in a college, and it would be very strange that he has a secret skill.’

    Marc Forster

As many CommanderBond.net readers are likely well aware by now, Marc Forster has been praised an uncountable number of times by those associated with the 007 film for his unwavering and almost unnatural sense of calmness.

    Director Marc Forster

    Director Marc Forster

When asked just how he manages as hectic a production as a Bond film, the director replied: ‘I’m very calm as a person, and I do most of the preparation before I start shooting so everybody knows when we come to shoot exactly what to do. But I feel like if I get nervous or agitated, it doesn’t really help me. I know some directors love working in chaos, and they can be very creative like that, but I need to have everybody calm around me.’

Continuing: ‘I let go to fate, because ultimately, I can’t change it. If something happens, I try to do my best, but I can’t change it or do it differently. In that sense, I’m a fatalist–whatever happens, happens, and I believe it’s the best and just, out of the situation, try to adjust.’

There’s much more. Visit Premiere.com for the full interviews with Craig, Kurylenko, Amalric and Forster.

  10. Radio Times Ranks The Best James Bond Stunts

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-24

Radio Times, the BBC’s weekly television and radio programme listings magazine, has compiled together a listing of the top-ranked stunts to feature in the James Bond films.

This newly released fan survey coincides with the publication of Radio Times Guide to Films 09, which features 00-actor Daniel Craig on the cover.

Which Bond stunt took the top spot? Read on…

    'Casino Royale'

Casino Royale Gets Fans’ Votes For Best Ever Double-0-Stunt

Film fans have voted the vertigo-inducing crane jump from Casino Royale the best ever James Bond stunt in a survey to coincide with the publication of Radio Times Guide to Films 09.

Self-confessed stunt fan Daniel Craig, who features on the cover of Radio Times Guide to Films 09, edged the iconic Union Jack ski jump stunt from Roger Moore’s The Spy Who Loved Me into second place. The crane stunt wins the public vote after previously scooping ‘Best High Work’ at the World Stunt Awards in 2007 for stuntmen Ben Cooke, Kai Martin, Marvin Stewart-Campbell and Adam Kirley.

Fans at RadioTimes.com voted a classic stunt from 1974 into third place–the “barrel roll” car jump from The Man with the Golden Gun performed by stuntman ‘Bumps’ Willard.

Fourth placed was the speedboat leap from Roger Moore’s first outing as James Bond in Live and Let Die, closely followed by the Thames speedboat chase from The World Is Not Enough. Returning to dry land, the ejector seat stunt from James Bond’s Aston Martin in Goldfinger claimed sixth place.

The Verzasca Dam dive in Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye may have registered a world record off-ground bungee jump height of 220m but it could only come seventh in the Radio Times survey. Completing the top ten stunts were the ski chase from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the leaping over the crocodiles in Live and Let Die and the motorbike jump over the helicopter in Tomorrow Never Dies.

“My personal favourite Bond stunt is the ski jump off the mountain because it was actually done,” said Andrew Collins, Radio Times Film Editor. “There would be no need to do that today, thanks to digital effects, and even if they did do it, we’d assume it was tampered with afterwards by a man at a computer. The ‘free running’ opener in Casino Royale was actually done by very agile men bouncing off walls but for me it can never match the good old days of stuntmen, parachutes and no retakes!”

Radio Times Guide to Films 09 is available in all good bookshops from 25th September and can be ordered online at www.bbcshop.com. Fans can see the full list of James Bond stunts and discuss their favourites by visiting www.radiotimes.com/bond-stunts.
