As earlier reported on the CommanderBond.net main page, Bond girls Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton were in attendance at Sunday evening’s Empire Awards ceremony, where Quantum of Solace came away with two awards, including Best Thriller.

When asked if she’d return in a future Bond film, Kurylenko stated: ‘I don’t know that. If they want me to, I’ll do it because it’s really one of the most amazing experiences one can have. If you were there, then you’d know what I’m talking about, so of course.’

Walking out of the ceremony with Quantum‘s Best Thriller award in hand, Kurylenko said she was going to hand the award off to producer Barbara Broccoli.

‘It’s all the people that worked on the movie that deserve it. We were… I don’t know how many… 300 I think and immense work has been done on the film and everyone worked so hard.’

  2. Latest Literary 007 Release Round-up

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-31

This week sees the release of various James Bond-related books in both the US.

Due out tomorrow are three biographies, one for Sean Connery, another for Daniel Craig and lastly the reissue of Andrew Lycett’s in-depth examination of 007’s creator, Ian Fleming.

    Daniel Craig: The Illustrated Biography

    Daniel Craig

    Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig: The Illustrated Biography looks at the life of this notoriously private actor, including his film and television appearances, his two-year marriage to Scottish actress Fiona Loudon (with whom he had a daughter, Ella) and his long-standing relationships with actress Heike Makatsch and film producer Satsuki Mitchell.

From humble beginnings on the Wirral, Merseyside in England where his mother was an art teacher and his father was the landlord of the Ring o’ Bells pub, Daniel Craig has worked long and hard for the high-profile career and international acclaim that are now his. Leaving home at the age of sixteen to join the National Youth Theatre in London, Daniel studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before landing a series of minor roles in British television series, including the swashbuckling Sharpe’s Eagle with Sean Bean. Daniel’s first major break in a leading TV role came in the BBC TV series Our Friends In The North in 1996, when he was twenty-seven years old. Further TV work followed until he landed the role of Angelina Jolie’s lover in the 2001 movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Establishing his Hollywood credentials, Daniel went on to appear in movies such as Sword of Honour and Road To Perdition, leading to his first starring role in 2004 in the thriller, Layer Cake.

By now a movie veteran with more than a dozen film acting roles under his belt. Daniel would go on to appear in another handful of films before it became known, early in 2005, that he was to become the sixth official screen Bond in the twenty-first Bond movie, Casino Royale. Although his appointment was controversial, heavily criticized by some Bond fans, his performance was widely praised. Having signed a multi-million dollar contract to appear in five Bond movies, Daniel will next appear, “Licensed to Kill” as 007, in the November 2008 release Quantum of Solace. Daniel has other movie roles slated for 2009, including I Lucifer, before beginning work on the as yet untitled Bond 23.

Sean Connery: Neither Shaken Nor Stirred

This is a biography of the actor, Sean Connery, who was born and brought up in an Edinburgh tenement, the son of a van driver and a charlady. Having left school at 13 and had a variety of jobs, including brickie and milkman, he spent three years in the Navy until invalided out with ulcers, and took up body-building and won a bronze medal in a Mr Universe contest.

Deciding on an acting career, he made his film debut in 1956 and the major break came with his appearance in the first James Bond film, Dr No. The book traces Connery’s career and also examines the contradictions of the man himself – one who is renowned for watching the pennies but gives generously to charities; a dedicated Scottish Nationalist who lives as an unrepentant tax exile; a star who sues film companies whilst being admired throughout the industry for professionalism, hard work and commitment; a sex symbol barely touched by scandal.

Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming’s life was just as dramatic as that of his fictional creation–James Bond 007. Andrew Lycett’s direct access to Fleming’s family, friends nd contemporaries has enabled him to reveal–for the first time–the truth behind the complicated fa&ccedilade of this enigmatic and remarkable man.

With an extraordinary cast of characters, this is biography at its best–part history part gossip, part informed reassessment of one of the century’s most celebrated yet mysterious personalities.

  3. Bond Girl Gemma Arterton Kisses And Tells

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-30

Following internet rumours sparked from a kiss between Gemma Arterton and Jake Gyllenhaal for the upcoming Disney epic, Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, the Bond girl set the story straight and discussed her work in Quantum of Solace with the Sydney Morning Herald.

Gemma Arterton is Agent Strawberry Fields in 'Quantum of Solace'

Gemma Arterton is Agent Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace

‘I didn’t tongue Jake Gyllenhaal,’ laughs the 23-year-old British actress. ‘That was a misquote and a half. Somebody asked me if I used my tongue and I said, ‘Well, I gave him a kiss and perhaps my tongue slipped’ and I thought, “Oh God no, what have I done?”‘

‘And then they said that I tongued him, which I didn’t. Which he’s probably very upset about and Reese Witherspoon is also probably a bit upset as well. You know, you snogged my boyfriend. No I didn’t, it was an accident.’

Arterton continues, giggling: ‘Yeah, I think I did the same with Daniel [Craig]. I get so carried away and he is an incredible kisser.’

Even with relatively limited screen time, Arterton’s Agent Strawberry Fields was generally viewed as a highlight in the 22nd James Bond film.

‘I never, ever, ever thought I’d be considered for Bond,’ she stated. ‘And when I got it, it was so out of this world that I decided I wasn’t going to put any pressure on myself and I wasn’t going to try and live up to anybody’s expectations and I was just going to enjoy it. And I did.’

‘I just did it,’ says Arterton of her love scene, which took place on her first day of shooting on Quantum. ‘Then Daniel started kissing up my back and … I went, “Oh my God, this is crazy.” But I never think about things too much, which is sometimes good and sometimes bad.’

‘I just keep taking it as it comes but it was a bit weird when my mum called. She said, “What are you doing?” I said, “I’m kissing Daniel Craig.” It was very out of this world.’

Her next role will be in Louis Leterrier’s upcoming remake of Clash of The Titans opposite Sam Worthington, who was one of the contenders for the role of 007 before it ultimately went to Craig.

‘I hope he’s nice because we have to fall in love,’ laughs Arterton. The film has a March 2010 release date.

James Bond has once again triumphed at the Empire Awards, scoring two wins out of its five nominations.

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace fought off stiff competition (including Best Picture winner No Country For Old Men) to take home Best Thriller at last night’s ceremony.

“It’s such a pleasure being here tonight and I’m very happy to receive this award,” said Olga Kurylenko, who accepted the trophy. “First of all I’d like to thank all the readers of Empire for supporting our film, and I accept this award on behalf of everyone who worked on Quantum of Solace. It was wonderful to work with people from the UK – by now it feels like home to me because I’ve spent so much time here. I especially want to thank Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson, Marc Forster and of course Daniel Craig.”

Meanwhile, Gemma Arterton scored a win for Best Newcomer. Last year, Arterton appeared in Quantum of Solace and RocknRolla. She has been previously nominated for her role in St Trinian’s.

Have a great night everyone!”

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-29

When you think of Bond girls, the name Max Versterhalt might not jump to mind. However, she not only appeared in Roger Moore’s 1981 For Your Eyes Only, she was originally intended to be one of its stars.

  7. The Bond Museum

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-28

Following up yesterday’s news that a 5 April opening date had been announced Keswick’s James Bond Museum, CommanderBond.net now has in-depth details on the numerous vehicles and gadgets featured in the 007 series that will be on display.

Full press release information follows below:

    The Bond Museum

Roger Moore and Barbara Bach with The Spy Who Loved Me's Lotus Esprit'

Roger Moore and Barbara Bach with The Spy Who Loved Me‘s Lotus Esprit

An exciting new museum will open in the Lake District on the 5th of April 2009. The Bond Museum is the brainchild of Peter Nelson who has been collecting James Bond items for 20 years and now has the biggest private collection in the World. The museum will feature several Aston Martin and Lotus cars used in the Bond films along side many other vehicles including the actual Russian T55 main battle tank used in the film GoldenEye, as well as boats , planes and even a Bell Jetranger helicopter.

The 5th of April is also a very special date being the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Albert R (Cubby) Broccoli. As a tribute to the Bond producer Nelson will unveil a bust on that date at the museum.

Nelson has also collected many of the props from the films, several being donated by many of the actors and crew. One of the iconic items on display will be the original Colibri Golden Gun plus many Q gadgets. However, it is the vehicles, many of which have never been seen by the public which will form the centre piece of the museum.

Nelson also owns the now famous Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in the town, but because the current museum is too small to house his large collection of Bond vehicles it had to have a new purpose built site close by.

“This will be a museum dedicated to the fans of 007,” states Nelson, who was a school boy when he first read the books of Ian Fleming and later became a fan himself of the films. “Like many others I have grown up with James Bond and its fantastic that the franchise continues in the very capable hands of the Fleming family, Barbara Broccoli, Michael Wilson and family,” says Nelson.

Ask him who is his favourite Bond and he states that each Bond was perfect for that era however his favourite film is Goldfinger, simply because it features the gadget laden DB5 which he states is the greatest car ever made–he should know he has two!

But Nelson has had his problems building such a major attraction, namely the sheer cost of the project. When he required a further extension to his overdraft he sent a very ‘tongue in cheek’ fax to his bank manager stating that failure to comply with his request would result in demolition of the bank with his tank. When the fax was intercepted by one of the junior staff in the absence of the manager he thought it a serious threat and nearly called the police! However the manager eventually granted the payment without recourse to Nelson’s threat!

At one time Nelson thought about selling the entire collection and did approach Christies, but on reflection he felt that it would be a shame to split the collection up since it is one of great historic as well as cultural importance. “Fans of Bond will want to see this collection in it’s entirety” Nelson states. And he has ensured that the museum has been completed to a standard that will impress visitors and also help to promote the films and the books. Nelson said that he is re reading Fleming’s books and has been so impressed how well written they are. “New Bond books have been written, but you simply can’t equal Fleming: he was an outstanding author”, says Nelson. Nelson also states that he is a great admirer of the work of Cubby Broccoli who he sites as a genius in his ability in finding and attracting the very best cast and crew for the films. “The most amazing thing is that Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have been able to carry on Cubby’s superb legacy extremely well indeed, which was no mean feat.” He is therefore sure that Bond will go on for many years to come.

The museum will be open from the 5th April 10am to 5pm. The unveiling of Nelsons bust of ‘Cubby’ at 10am on that morning.

List of vehicles in the collection:

  10. 'Quantum of Solace' On Blu-ray/DVD – What The Critics Said (Part III)

Daniel Craig is James Bond in Quantum of Solace

Following up a home video debut in Australia last Wednesday, this week marked the release of Quantum of Solace in the UK, US and elsewhere around the world.

Over the past few days, several media websites have been posting reviews–including those for the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD and the Blu-ray disc–of the 22nd James Bond adventure to see how it holds up on the home video format.

CommanderBond.net has compiled together an detailed listing of the various Blu-ray/DVD reviews of Quantum of Solace

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID (PART III)

Daniel Craig confirms in Quantum that he’s the best Bond since Connery [Blu-ray]

That’s certainly led to some mixed reviews for Quantum. Some fans have complained because it’s a departure from the more traditional stand-alone Bond adventure format, and critics bemoan the fact that there’s not as much humor and style, and that there’s too much action up front, and that the film is too short. Here’s what I say to all that: NUTS!

Let me give you a bit of sage advice. The best thing you can do for yourself going into Quantum, is to re-watch Casino Royale first, preferably RIGHT beforehand. You’ll be glad you did, because this movie picks up literally one hour after the last film ended, and there’s no recap. You’re thrust right smack into the middle of the action, going 100kph with lead flying, and you’d better be ready for it. ‘Cause if you’re not, you’re gonna be left in the dust pretty quickly…

This instalment looks fine, but the story itself is suffering

    ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

With a third Craig outing assured, perhaps they will pick up the dramatic pace as well as the frantic action stakes. With the introduction of an organisation that is pitted against Bond the next instalment could go somewhere interesting. But with his “revenge” thread sorted out (sort of?) the writers are going to have to come up with something very interesting. Perhaps a decent villain(s) and maybe less Bond girls’ next time out instead of retreading the conventions of past glories. They were wise to drop the whole Q Gadgets and Moneypenny aspects, now maybe they can drop a few more Bond conventions and truly make the next one different…

Quantum of Solace is an intensely exciting James Bond adventure [Blu-ray]

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Quantum of Solace is an exceptional James Bond picture that was unfairly maligned by critics. Perhaps the film’s abrupt beginning, which starts without alerting audiences to the plot of the previous film, caught viewers who weren’t intimately familiar with Casino Royale off guard. As such, viewers of Quantum of Solace are advised to re- watch Casino Royale immediately prior to beginning the film. MGM’s Blu-ray presentation of the film is first rate; its reference grade video and audio set new standards in Blu-ray quality. Those on the lookout for supplements, however, will be disappointed in the slim selection of extras included with the release. Quantum of Solace is an intensely exciting James Bond adventure that ties up loose ends from Casino Royale, while cementing Daniel Craig’s place among the best Bonds in history. Quantum of Solace receives my highest recommendation…

Quantum of Solace is a fine Bond adventure, but it doesn’t quite stack up against Casino Royale [Blu-ray]

    ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Solace is not operating on the flashy mediocrity of Brosnan’s films, but it’s also not doing the stakes Royale established justice. It’s the Bond movie we don’t mind having as a diversion, but it’s not the Bond film we deserve. Daniel Craig is arguably the best Bond since Connery, he should be sparring with Vesper or Le Chiffre equivalents, not Paul Greengrass-ing over rooftops and into sinkholes.

The first direct sequel in the Bond series, QoS picks up shortly after Casino Royale and finds 007 (Daniel Craig) investigating the shadowy network that recruited Vesper to serve as its double agent. M (Dame Judi Dench) fears that Bond is merely on a personal vendetta, but the secret agent insists that he is only concerned with doing his duty. During his globe-hopping quest — which takes him to Italy, Haiti, Austria and, finally, Bolivia — Bond identifies several leading members of the mysterious Quantum organization, including eco-friendly tycoon Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric)…
