  2. Another Way To Die

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-03-01

    Another Way To Die

    Written by Jack White
Performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys

Another ringer with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty
Another one with the golden tongue poisoning your fantasy
Another bill from a killer turned a thriller to a tragedy

    A door left open
    A woman walking by
    A drop in the water
    A look in the eye
    A phone on the table
    A man on your side
Oh, someone that you think that you can trust
    Is just
    Another way to die

Another tricky little gun giving solace to the one
That will never see the sunshine
Another inch of your life sacrificed for your brother, in the nick of time
Another dirty money, heaven sent honey, turning on a dime

    Well, a door left open
    A woman walking by
    A drop in the water
    A look in the eye
    A phone on the table
    A man on your side
Oh, someone that you think that you can trust
    Is just
    Another way to die

    (It’s just another)
    Hey!
    (It’s just another)
    Shoot ’em, bang bang!
Oh oh oh oh oh oh!
Oh oh oh oh oh oh!
Oh oh oh oh oh oh!

Another girl with her finger on the world
Singing to you what you wanna hear
Another gun thrown down and surrendered took away your fear, hey
Another man there, he stands right behind you looking in the mirror

    Oh, a door left open
    A woman walking by
    A drop in the water
    A look in the eye
    A phone on the table
    A man on your side
Someone that you think that you can trust
    Is just
    Another way to die

    (It’s just another)
    (It’s just another)
    Shoot ’em up, bang bang!
    Hey! Hey!
    (It’s just another)
    Yeah! Yeah!
    (It’s just another)
    (It’s just another)
    (It’s just another)
    It’s just another day!
    Bang bang bang bang!

  5. Paul McCartney Selects Duffy For 'Live And Let Die' Cover

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-14

Her name first crept up as a possible contender for the Quantum of Solace title theme and now she’s back in the news again–this time because of a song James Bond fans have likely heard endless times.

Wales Online reports that the popular Welsh solo artist has been hand-picked by Paul McCartney to perform a cover of his 1973 hit Bond theme, ‘Live and Let Die’.

The song will be featured on an upcoming Heroes album in aid of the War Child charity. The concept behind the album involved some of pop and rock’s biggest songwriters, including Bob Dylan and U2, picking one of their own hits and nominating a favourite modern act to rework the song.

Said Sir Paul: ‘I think Duffy’s version of Live and Let Die is great–I was really impressed.’

Ben Knowles, music director of the charity and executive producer on the album, said the first person they approached for the album was Sir Paul McCartney who quickly responded with his nomination. ‘Sir Paul chose Duffy last spring before her rise to fame,’ he stated. ‘They met on her first appearance on Later with Jools Holland and he knew she was going to be a star.’

He continued: ‘Duffy has done a really stripped bare, northern soul version of the Bond theme song. It’s not just an exact replica of the song but her own personal interpretation of it and she has done a really brave reworking of one of the most played and instantly recognisable songs ever. I would be very surprised if this is the last Bond song she sings.’

Knowles also weighed in on the comparisons between Duffy and another instantly recognizable 007 theme performer, Dame Shirley Bassey. ‘Wales has an incredible track record of doing Bond themes and here you have two powerful and individual Welsh voices doing a Bond song–you can’t help but compare both artists.’

I also think the album will bring different generations together–I can imagine children arguing with their parents about who sings Bond theme songs the best–Dame Shirley or Duffy.’

Lyn Davies, head of vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, was a fan of Sir Paul’s choice. ‘Duffy has her own kind of style and she will lend the song a totally different style from what’s been done before,’ she said.

‘She has a unique voice that also harks back to previous eras. Sir Paul will have spotted her potential to create something new from his classic song–new wine in old bottles, if you like. She’s one in a very long line of Welsh vocalists in every field of vocal endeavour that is doing well and that’s great news.’

Jessica Morgan, managing director of Cardiff’s Space recording studios, also voiced her praise for the selection, stating: ‘Despite being a very demanding song to sing, Duffy has the guts in her voice to carry off Live and Let Die.’

Heroes, the fifth War Child album, which raises money to help children affected by conflict, was recorded over six months in studios in London, Manchester, Paris, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles and was mastered at Abbey Road studios in London. It is due for release on 16 February.

  6. 'John Barry – The Man With The Midas Touch' Now Available

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-11-05

It’s taken more than a full year of waiting, but John Barry – The Man with the Midas Touch, a book celebrating the work of the famed James Bond film composer is finally available.

Delayed from its original 2007 release date, John Barry – The Man with the Midas Touch was released on 31 October in the UK.

Written by Geoff Leonard, Pete Walker and Gareth Bramley, this illustrated hardback is published by Redcliffe Press Ltd and retails for £19.99. The original announcement from JohnBarry.org.uk follows:

Whether or not you purchased John Barry – A life in Music, ten years ago, you can look forward to a book that has been thoroughly re-written and completely updated. We have spent a lot of time on the picture content and this too has been extensively updated and includes a good selection of rare photos, both colour and black and white.

There are approximately 300 pages including two photo sections of 16 pages each of colour and b & w. In addition to this, a photo introduces each of the thirty chapters, and, of course, the discography has been updated to include everything that’s happened since 1998. It’s a book that does full justice to a glittering career.

We want to emphasise that this project is basically a self-publication in that we have commissioned a publisher to act on our behalf. All the work has been done by a team of dedicated Barry fans, much of it voluntarily.

Therefore, we want to encourage as many as possible to order (and therefore pay for) the book now, even though it won’t be available until October/November. Of course, there will be a discount if you do this–we don’t expect anybody to pay in advance purely for our benefit!

The book will retail at £19.99 ($39.99) but for those wishing to pay in advance, the cost will be £14.99 ($29.99)–a saving of 25%!

007 fans best know Barry for his work as composer on the scores for 11 James Bond films, starting with 1963’s From Russia With Love and finally ending with 1987’s The Living Daylights.
