  1. MK12 Slated For 'Quantum of Solace' Main Titles

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-29

Design company MK12 has been signed up to handle the main title sequence for the 22nd James Bond adventure, Quantum of Solace, according to recent reports.

The Kansas City design group, represented by The Ebeling Group, previously designed the intricate title sequences for Marc Forster’s two most recent films, 2007’s The Kite Runner and 2006’s Stranger Than Fiction.

Following up these two successful working collaborations, the Quantum of Solace director invited the group to come on board for the latest Bond film.

What is unclear at this point is the level of involvement series regular Daniel Kleinman will have with the title sequence. It may be that MK12 will be acting as the digital intermediate on the sequence (like company Framestore CFC was for 2006’s Casino Royale) and that Kleinman will still be handling the design of the titles.

Kleinman first became associated with the 007 series through his work on the Gladys Knight music video for 1989’s Licence to Kill. He then took over from Maurice Binder as main title designer and has contributed to all four of the Pierce Brosnan Bond films as well as Craig’s debut in Casino Royale.

Visit the official MK12 website for a closer look at the design company and their work.

  3. Marc Forster: A Different Style For James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-27
    Director Marc Forster

Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster has just given a new interview to MSN Movies UK, where he discusses editing, action sequences, on-set accidents, the upcoming teaser trailer and a new style for the 22nd James Bond adventure.

‘We wrapped the film around a week ago and now I’m in post-production and have started the editing process,’ Forster said. ‘We have four weeks to cut the film, then we have a preview, and then two more weeks and then we lock pictures. It’s a very tight schedule’.

As previously stated, Forster is aiming for a leaner 007 film by having Quantum of Solace run at ‘just under two hours’. In the past, Tomorrow Never Dies was the first Bond film since the 1960’s to have a run time under the two-hour mark. On the flip side, Daniel Craig’s debut in Picture: Daniel Craig

Stylistically, [Quantum of Solace] will be very different,’ Forster continued. ‘I approached the film very differently and it’s going in a different direction. There was more action in Casino Royale, but my goal was to bring it back to the 60s and early 70s. I was always inspired by the early Bond films–Dr. No, Goldfinger–and the sets designed by Ken Adam. I want to go back to the feel of the old set designs, which were incredibly interesting and ahead of their time. I felt the look of the Bond franchise was a little bit neglected in the last decade–to make a more stylish Bond is a little more interesting.’

When the ‘twice as much’ action question came up, Forster briefly described some of the standout sequences that fans could expect to see in the film: ‘There’s an airplane sequence that’s a real cat-and-mouse game,’ he said. ‘I think it’s really breathtaking and a lot of fun. Another scene is the finale of a foot chase in Vienna during which they crash into a cathedral and there’s a fight. I really like that sequence; I feel I haven’t seen it in any film before.’

And what about the teaser trailer everyone is eagerly awaiting?

‘It’s a teaser and I’m really happy with it. Even in a minute and a half, I think it captures the essence and the feel of the movie. I feel great about it and I have a really good feeling about the movie. I hope audiences will enjoy it as well.’

Only a matter of days until 007 fans around the world get to experience it…

  • 'Quantum of Solace' – Official Blog Report #14

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-24

The official Quantum of Solace blog has been updated today with another crew member from the 22nd James Bond 007 film: additional unit director Simon Crane.

‘I’m a second unit director for the boat sequence here in Panama,’ says Crane.

‘We’re doing a great sequence where James Bond leaps onto a motorbike and then onto a boat; chases after another boat, smashes into it, gets the girl, is in a shootout … it’s going to be very, very exciting.’

‘The complications are trying to make something new,’ Crane says of the sequence. ‘I mean, we did a fantastic boat sequence in The World is not Enough, so it’s trying to better that. What we’re trying to do is make it much more aggressive, much more natural. Just hard-hitting, real action. No CG.’

‘Daniel [Craig] is very active and very agile. He wants to get involved in everything and can drive this boat really well. And so, the more we can do with him, the better it’s going to be.’

Be sure to click on the video link above for footage of Craig and Olga Kurylenko in the action-packed sequence.

Simon Crane has been involved with the James Bond series going back to 1985’s A View to a Kill.

  • Tom Ford Dresses James Bond In 'Quantum of Solace'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-24
    Daniel Craig

    Daniel Craig

As previously reported on CommanderBond.net, Tom Ford International will be taking up the mantle of dressing Daniel Craig for the actor’s return as James Bond in Quantum of Solace.

Ford confirmed the news yesterday in Italy, reports the LA Times, where the fashion designer was opening a new menswear store in Milan’s ‘Golden Triangle’ shopping district.

‘It’s a terrific representation for us,’ said Ford. ‘A lot of people think if you wear conservative clothing your life is dull and uninteresting. But James Bond is this character who is sophisticated yet he sleeps with three girls at once and [has a car] with parachutes coming out of it. His life is very interesting, so I thought it was a good fit.’

The designer had previously dressed Craig in his namesake men’s line launched last year, which ‘has a traditional, English bespoke feel’. Since then, he opened his first menswear store on Madison Avenue, where his Italian-made suits start at $3,800 off the rack and $5,000 made-to-measure.

Not differentiating the way he dresses Craig on screen as Bond or on screen, Ford said: ‘Their tastes are very similar. Daniel knows himself really well and he likes to keep it very, very, very, very simple. For example, it’s hard to get him to wear diamond studs with a tuxedo. He prefers buttons.’

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

Ford worked alongside Quantum of Solace costume designer Louise Frogley to create made-to-measure suits, shirts, knitwear, ties and his own take on 007’s signature tuxedo, in navy blue.

‘We made about 420 pieces for 11 costume changes,’ Ford said. ‘For each scene we made three suits that were perfect, three suits that were bloodied and blown up, three suits that were bloodied, blown up and had been in a pool–and then we had to make most of those different permutations for the stunt men as well.’

He’s the best Bond since Sean Connery. He’s a terrific guy to dress and he’s pretty powerful with what he wears.’
