  1. The Finer Details: Gardner vs. Benson

    By Helmut Schierer on 2012-08-12

CommanderBond.net is pleased to announce a new line of original content. The header ‘The Finer Details’ from now on will feature a selection of Bond themed articles by CBn-crew and guest writers. Expect new material of a 00-nature in this place monthly – if not more.

We begin this series with an article by Luke Freeman.

GARDNER VS. BENSON: RE-INTRODUCING JAMES BOND

The merits of the James Bond novels written after the death of creator Ian Fleming, the “Continuation novels”, in particular those of the two long-running continuation authors, John Gardner (who wrote 14 original Bond novels between 1981 and 1997), and Raymond Benson (who succeeded Gardner, writing 6 original novels from 1997 to 2002) have been discussed and debated with each successive new entry to the canon. But to compare and contrast the different takes on the Bond character and differing approaches to Bond story-telling employed by Gardner and later Benson, indeed, to even define them, to surmise their respective intents and their overall strengths and weaknesses, we perhaps need look no further than the way they each introduced the character right back in their respective debut Bond novels, Gardner’s ‘Licence Renewed’, and Benson’s ‘Zero Minus Ten’.

    Greetings fellow Bond fans,
It’s admittedly hardly surprising that the new authors would have used the very first entrance of the Bond character in their respective canons to outline their mission statement for Bond and what it was that they would be attempting to do with him, but it perhaps is a surprise, when we look at what it was they were attempting, and the merits of their approaches, just how much these introductions would reveal about what each would go on to give us as James Bond continuation authors.

  4. “New Bond has no heart.” says George Lazenby

    By Matthew Harkin on 2012-08-10

One time Bond actor George Lazenby has criticised the latest James Bond movies for having no heart.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ actor gave his thoughts on current Bond star Daniel Craig.

“He’s a fantastic actor, but [his movies] are more violent, aren’t they? It’s the way our society has gone, You can’t have someone who’s got feelings now. Bond has to be able to shoot someone now and kiss a girl three minutes later. When I did it, it had more heart. There’s no heart to the new Bond.”

  6. Bond on stage – and she’s wearing a dress!

    By Helmut Schierer on 2012-08-09

Suzuki Bazooki (Juliet Holding) and Martini Bond (Clare Jones)

Imagine one day the usual intelligence blunder in London’s Public Transport doesn’t concern itself with uninteresting trivia like Middle East secrets but with a real headline-league scoop: left on a train this time is the personnel file of THE secret agent incarnate: James Bond. Whose file also happens to contain a lovely kiddie photo of yourself, indicating you share half of his DNA. Does that sound exciting? It is, even more so for Martini Bond, the young woman who this way learns her papa wasn’t a Rolling Stone, but might as well have been. At least it explains her childhood in a single parent household, which had pros and cons. As one might expect if mum is a Bond girl.

But Martini has no time to ponder her fate and write daddy a stiff letter about his shortcomings in her upbringing. Bond is missing after doing business of the deadly kind with one Franken von Banken; just the person to trust with your money and matters of world domination in general. Martini’s mission – should she choose not to go shopping instead – is to find dad and save the world. If she succeeds nobody’s going to complain Bond’s wearing a dress in this one…

    Lyndsey Jones

This year’s Camden Fringe Festival presents Bond fans with a truly special treat by playwright Lyndsey Jones. Her new comedy ‘Martini Bond – The Hunt for the Spy Who Loved Her Mum’ honours 50 years of Bond on the silver screen in a most remarkable manner. It’s an affectionate celebration of the spy who saved the world time and again from pure evil, and audiences around the globe from boredom and drabness by sipping his vodka martini in our place – amongst other things we’d love to do, but do not dare. Nobody does it better for us than James Bond.

CommanderBond.net spoke with Lyndsey Jones about her comedy and gained some intriguing background information, thanks entirely to the playwright, who kindly offered photographic documentation from the rehearsals for ‘Martini Bond’. An offer we of course coldly and shamelessly exploited in true Bond fashion, as you can see in the photos coming with this article.

Athena Stamos and ‘Star Cars’ visited this year’s Comic-Con on a reconnaissance mission, which provided some sensational detail about Mr Bond’s more intriguing modes of transport. And we don’t mean the cable-car of  ‘A View To A Kill’ here.

An exclusive look at four wild screen-used vehicles from the lethal world of 007, including an interview with their maker.

If you were at Comic-Con this year, you might’ve seen these cars from behind a velvet rope. But Athena Stamos got up-close and personal to declassify the top secrets of not one but four of the most outrageous vehicles James Bond has ever driven (or faced). In celebration of 007’s 50th anniversary on film and the upcoming Blu-ray set, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment enlisted the help of the Ian Fleming Foundation to display a different Bond car each day of the Con. We even chatted with Andy Smith, builder of some of the vehicles as well as the Tumbler seen in The Dark Knight Rises. For your eyes only in the vid above.

Vehicles covered in this video include the Aston Martin V8 Vantage from The Living Daylights (1987), Q’s Jet-Boat from The World Is Not Enough (1999), a Para-Hawk from The World Is Not Enough, and Zao’s Jaguar XKR from Die Another Day (2002).

A new Star Cars episode premieres every other Thursday. Be sure to follow Star Cars on Facebook for more exclusive content.

A big ‘Thank you’ to Athena Stamos and ‘Star Cars’ for the kind permission to share this here.

You can discuss this video in this thread
