  1. Collecting 007: John Gardner's James Bond In Large Print (2)

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-11

For collectors who specialize in the literary James Bond, there is a seemingly endless supply of different editions and printings available to search for. One such format is the Large Print editions. Meant to accommodate those who have poor vision, the typical large print edition of a book will have size 16 font or higher.

    John Gardner

    John Gardner

Numerous James Bond novels have been published in the Large Print format, including the Ian Fleming, John Gardner, Raymond Benson and Charlie Higson adventures. These editions of the novels are almost always printed in relatively limited quantities with the majority of them being stocked exclusively in libraries. Additionally, they often feature brand new jacket cover artwork that is not featured on any other printing of the book.

As a result of this, the Large Print editions of the Bond novels can be a bit more tricky to obtain for dedicated collectors.

Following up our Raymond Benson collecting guide, CommanderBond.net now continues with the James Bond novels written by author John Gardner from 1981 to 1996. Included are publication details, the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) identifiers, cover artwork and other related notes.

NOTE: Ordering links are provided for Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, but do note that the overwhelming majority of these Large Print editions are out of print. However, one can often obtain a used copy via the Amazon Marketplace or at alternate used sites, such as eBay or AbeBooks.

All of the James Bond novels and novelizations written by John Gardner have been released in the Large Print format with the exception of 1989’s Licence To Kill.

  2. Barbara Broccoli And Michael G. Wilson Talk Bond And Beyond

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-10

With the centenary celebrations of Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli currently taking place at BFI Southbank, The Guardian recently had a chance to sit down and talk with current James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson

Meeting them at Eon House in Piccadilly, London, Jason Solomons started off the conversation discussing the legacy their father has created through his work on the 007 series.

‘Oh, definitely,’ said Barbara Broccoli. ‘I mean, Cubby Broccoli, my father, was an extraordinary man and he assembled with Dr. No the most astounding group of talent with directors and craftsmen and created with his partner Harry Saltzman a new genre of films.’

When asked how Broccoli, as a producer, left his creative stamp on the series, Wilson said: ‘Well, he was a creative producer. And there are a few, but sadly not as many today as there used to be. He was someone who was very involved in the creation of the script and the selecting of the major crew, you know, the director and the major heads of department.’

‘He would like to sit on the set and be there in case anything needed his attention. He just loved making films. It was his life.’

    Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli

    Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli

Barbara added: ‘I think we think about [Cubby] all the time, both consciously or subconsciously. Often when we’re in a bit of a pickle, we’ll sit and think–or I’ll sit and think–“what would dad do?”, and then you go “oh, that’s what he’d do, so that’s what we’re going to do”. He always believed that you had to be decisive, you know, that it was very important to get as much information as you needed and then make a decision.’

To be expected, the subject of Daniel Craig’s forthcoming film, Bond 23 briefly came up for discussion. ”We don’t have any plans yet,’ Wilson stated. ‘We’re working on it, you know, we’ll be back.’

Listen to the full interview here for much more, including Barbara Broccoli’s favourite Sean Connery film and her finding out that James Bond was, in fact, not a real person.

Come and join us for a weekend-long celebration of one of cinema’s most loved and enduring heroes. As the centrepiece of our two-month retrospective of the career of producer Albert R Broccoli, we have organised an extravaganza for Bond fans old and new. Visit us on Saturday 2 May to see a fleet of 8 Bond Cars including Goldfinger‘s 1937 Phantom III Rolls-Royce, Bond’s submersible Lotus Espirit from The Spy Who Loved Me and a variety of Aston Martins heavily armed with gadgets and weapons. We will have an SFX specialist on hand to demonstrate some of these very special extras.

Throughout the weekend we’ll be welcoming special guests to talk about their experiences of working on Bond films, including David Arnold, John Glen, Lindy Hemming, Lewis Gilbert and Vic Armstrong.

On Saturday evening our benugo bar will play host to a Bond club event with DJs playing an appropriately suave mix of Bond- inspired grooves, a fun casino complete with BFI/Bond prizes and, of course, special Bond cocktails, shaken not stirred. On Sunday our Family Funday will include a visit from the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car, and a host of fun activities for younger cinema lovers. Watch out for other Broccoli events during the month.

    David Arnold Masterclass

    Fri 1 May 18:30 NFT1

One might imagine that succeeding John Barry as composer for Bond might be a daunting task, but David Arnold has done so with aplomb, composing dynamic scores for Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. As well as composing for marquee greats such as Independence Day, for which he won a Grammy award, David is a much sought after producer and songwriter and will be joining us for an illustrated on-stage masterclass.

Joint ticket available with 20:30 screening of The World Is Not Enough on Fri 1 May, £12.90 (concs £9.65) on 020 7928 3232.

Moonraker + Lewis Gilbert in Conversation

    Sat 2 May 15:00 NFT1

For Your Eyes Only had been announced as the next Bond film in the closing credits of The Spy Who Loved Me, but with the success of sci-fi hits Star Wars and Close Encounters…, Broccoli instead decided to produce Moonraker in which Bond blasts off into space aboard a shuttle. Lonsdale is compelling as megalomaniac villain Hugo Drax and Bernard Lee makes his last appearance as M.

    Stunt Masterclass with Vic Armstrong

    Sat 2 May 18:40 NFT1

He’s worked with some of the greatest directors of modern cinema, doubled for the leading stars in Hollywood, co-ordinated the best stunts in some of the biggest blockbusters of all time and has been awarded an Oscar for his services to film, as well as an honorary BAFTA for lifetime achievement. We’re honoured to welcome to BFI Southbank Vic Armstrong – who worked on the Bond stunts from You Only Live Twice until Die Another Day – to speak about his craft.

    The Costume Interpreter: Lindy Hemming

    Sun 3 May 15:20 NFT1

Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming masterminded the costumes for five Bond films and in the process helped modernise the look of the legendary franchise. Easing Bond out of his traditional Savile Row suits, she helped to create Pierce Brosnan’s urbane Bond, shaped the image of Judi Dench’s M and reinterpreted Ursula Andress’ bikini for Halle Berry, moving on to tailor the momentous transition when Daniel Craig assumed the role. Author and journalist Bronwyn Cosgrave welcomes Lindy Hemming to discuss her career to date, which spans from My Beautiful Laundrette to Harry Potter and The Dark Knight.

The Living Daylights + John Glen in Conversation

    Sun 3 May 17:30 NFT1

We warmly welcome another Bond maestro to BFI Southbank: director John Glen. He first played a hand in the series as 2nd unit director on On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Working on two more instalments of the franchise, he took the helm in 1987, directing The Living Daylights, and went on to make a further four, directing more Bonds than anyone else. Expect an evening of insightful stories from a man who has played a pivotal role in this monumental film series.

    Moonraker + Richard Kiel Q&A

    Sun 10 May 17:30 NFT1

Actor Richard Kiel joins us to talk about his roles as one of Bond’s great adversaries (The Spy Who Loved Me) and as an ally (Moonraker): the steel-toothed Jaws. Richard, now retired from the screen, is an author and regular guest at Bond conventions.

Sir Ken Adam and Sir Christopher Frayling in Conversation

    Wed 20 May 18:30 NFT1

We are delighted to welcome the man whose vision and creativity defined the look and feel of Bond films for arguably the series’ most iconic and influential period. Within a stellar career, Ken Adam is best known for his futuristic set and production designs for no less than seven Bond films from Dr No in 1962 to Moonraker in 1979. His flair for combining technology and an instinct for the decadent inspired designs produced for countless memorable Bond locales and cars, including the Fort Knox interior and the gadget-laden Aston Martin DB6 for Goldfinger, Blofeld’s volcano lair for You Only Live Twice, and the submersible Lotus Esprit for The Spy Who Loved Me.

Adam is also widely acknowledged as having a significant influence on architecture through his innovative use of industrial materials, particularly glass, steel and concrete. Christopher Frayling, until recently the rector of the Royal College of Art, is a well known historian, critic and award-winning broadcaster and author. He has published many books on contemporary culture, including the definitive Ken Adam – The Art of Production Design.

    Sir Roger Moore in Conversation

    Thu 28 May 18:20 NFT1

To close our tribute season to Cubby Broccoli, we are delighted to welcome to the BFI Southbank stage the man who, in taking on the role no less than seven times, helped establish James Bond as the archetypal British hero – Sir Roger Moore. First coming to prominence as Simon Templar in the hugely successful spy-thriller TV series The Saint, he claimed his most famous role as 007 with 1973’s Live and Let Die. Bringing a more relaxed and suave tone to Bond Sir Roger was instrumental in extending the life of the charming but deadly secret agent. Now an ambassador for UNICEF and highly commended for his charitable work, he will discuss the exhilarating world of 007, his memories of Broccoli and his career so far.

  4. Stana Katic On Bonding With Daniel Craig And Marc Forster

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-10
    Stana Katic

    Stana Katic

The Hollywood Interview features a discussion with Canadian actress Stana Katic. While currently the female star of the ABC’s new police drama Castle, James Bond fans will best remember her as Corinne Veneau in last year’s Quantum of Solace.

While the interview focuses mostly on her current work on Castle, her brief turn as a Bond girl was also brought up.

While Katic doesn’t appear in Quantum of Solace until the end of the film along with Simon Kassianides, she revealed that she was originally up for the role that eventually went to Gemma Arterton.

‘It was a blast! I really wanted to be a part of that film, and was up for the role of Strawberry Fields originally, but they felt I wasn’t right for it, plus I didn’t want to play someone who got killed, and everyone gets killed in that bloody movie!’

She also spoke about working alongside Daniel Craig and director Marc Forster: ‘I got to spend three days working on that legendary sound stage in London. Daniel Craig was great, very funny, very charming. And Marc Forster was an amazing director. We’ve become friends and he has such an amazing, light touch as a director, and at the same time, has this incredible core strength, which is a great combination for a director to have.’

‘In many ways [Marc] reminds me of the way Johnny Depp played the character of Sir James Matthew Barrie in Finding Neverland. I wonder if Johnny modeled his performance after Marc.’

  6. Bond School At The BFI From 14-17 April

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-09

BFI’s celebration of James Bond continues as they mark the centenary of producer Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. As first mentioned in the initial press release announcing the April season of 007 screenings, BFI will be running a ‘Bond School’ event during the Easter holiday which is specially catered to the younger Bond fans.

    James Bond Season At BFI

    April Screenings | May Screenings
    IMAX Screenings | Bond School

CommanderBond.net now has full details on this event, which is scheduled to take place from 14 to 17 April:

Calling all Young 007s! During the Easter holidays we’ll be running a training school at BFI Southbank for any prospective secret agents, aged 10+. Learn how the stunt masters make Bond fights look real, editors cut trailers, music is composed and scripts are developed and storyboarded… then try it out yourself!

Bond School runs for 4 days from Tuesday 14 – Friday 17 April and is £15 per day:

Tuesday – Scripts and Storyboards: script and storyboarding with Kwame Lestrade; we take a scenario from a Bond film and together script a scene from it, then construct a storyboard using Comic Life. The workshop will run from 10-2pm followed by screening of a Bond classic in our Studio until 4pm.

Wednesday – Stunts: stunt workshop with Alasdair Monteith of the London Stunt School and friends. Alasdair will look at contrasting ways of arranging and filming fights, then after practising and filming some simple moves, we’ll prepare and shoot a fight sequence based on a scene from a Bond film. Workshop from 10-2pm, then screening of a Bond classic in our Studio until 4pm.

Thursday – Editing: Our partners Film Education and PPC will take you through the process of cutting a trailer for a Bond release. PPC have made promotional trailers for Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, and we hope to be working with materials from a recent Bond film. Workshop from 10-2pm, followed by screening of a Bond classic in our Studio until 4pm.

Friday – Composing: The James Bond theme is the single constant and most recognisable ingredient in the Bond recipe. In this workshop we’ll be working with partners Sibelius music and sound editing software to compose a soundtrack for a Bond sequence. No previous music experience is necessary, just a bit of imagination!

Tickets can be booked online, in person at BFI Southbank or by telephone from the BFI Box Office on 020 7928 3232.

If you have any queries please email: [email protected]. Children will be supervised throughout and will need a packed lunch. Certificates for all films screened will be 12, PG or 12A. We don’t think the activities will be suitable for children under 10.

For further details, visit the official BFI Southbank website.

CommanderBond.net will continue to keep you updated with all the events going on at the BFI to mark the Albert R. Broccoli centenary.

    Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli

The latter half of Cubby Broccoli’s career was dominated by the Bond franchise, which he nurtured and maintained as the benchmark of the contemporary action genre.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing. Throughout the years Broccoli had to deal with various challenges, a rival Bond picture, a massive studio fire at Pinewood, and – perhaps toughest of all – finding new actors to step into the Bond role. After Lazenby’s one-movie stand, Connery unexpectedly returned for one more film, Diamonds Are Forever. After Connery finally left the franchise, the usual media frenzy arose as to who would take over but, when the decision was finally announced, and it was Roger Moore, it was universally acclaimed as a good choice. Moore steered the franchise through a dozen rewarding years, effortlessly essaying a suave and witty Bond. Timothy Dalton was next up, suggesting a harder-edged Bond who was less predictable and more at odds with M. Broccoli lived to oversee the appointment of Pierce Brosnan in his terrific debut GoldenEye.

Throughout this period his stepson Michael G Wilson and daughter Barbara Broccoli had provided sterling support, working various roles within producing. When Cubby sadly passed away at the age of 87, he left knowing that the franchise would continue in Michael and Barbara’s capable hands. The season features ten new digital restorations.

A selection of the James Bond films will also screen at BFI IMAX. For details check www.bfi.org.uk/imax, or call the box office on 0870 787 2525.

According to The Numbers charts, the 22nd James Bond film debuted in the #3 position overall with 1,213,017 units sold (which equates to $21,894,957 in actual sales). Grabbing the top two positions on the chart were Twilight and Bolt, respectively.

  9. Rumour Control: Tony Gilroy Under Consideration For 'Bond 23'?

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-08
    Tony Gilroy

    Tony Gilroy

Today’s Bond 23 rumour comes courtesy of Cinema Blend, where they claim that Tony Gilroy is under consideration for directing Daniel Craig’s next James Bond film.

Citing an unnamed source, Cinema Blend states that Gilroy is currently one of top contenders being considered by 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The website stresses the fact that he is just one of likely many possibilities since Bond 23 is at such an early stage at the moment.

Gilroy is probably best known for his screenplay credits on all of the three Jason Bourne films. He made his directorial debut in 2007 with the Academy Award-winning Michael Clayton and followed that up with the spy thriller Duplicity, which is currently playing in theatres.
