  3. Limited edition Thunderball prints for sale

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-06-22

007 Magazine reports that several ultra-rare James Bond prints created for Kevin McClory’s ill-fated Thunderball project are now available for sale.

The prints are being sold and presented on canvas by local photographer Sylvan Mason (who was interviewed by CommanderBond.net in 2006), daughter of screenwriter Jack Whittingham.

Her website carries the following information:

In 1959, an Irish entrepreneur called Kevin McClory, envisioned the making of a movie with Ian Fleming featuring James Bond.

At a time when the first seven Fleming novels had been turned down by the top film studios of the day, for being too violent, sadistic, and unbelievable, successful novelist, Ian Fleming had wearied of writing; was ‘bereft of new ideas’, and wanted to kill Bond off and go travelling.

British screenwriter, Jack Whittingham who had just gone freelance from the Ealing Studios team, was commissioned to write a film that would be acceptable to the British public and, with Ian Fleming’s permission, took the character of James Bond and created the very first original 007 screenplay entitled Thunderball.

Thunderball, therefore, was the very first screenplay of the movie series, and should have been the first produced film, however, the making of it was halted and held up by long drawn out legal complications, and, eventually, it came out as the fourth Bond film, and the biggest in box office terms.

The series of unique pre-production storyboard drawings by Steven Grimes, John Huston’s Art Director, that adorn the walls of Fulham’s newest ‘In Place’, The Fulham Grill, were originally created for Thunderball. They are presented on canvas by local photographer Sylvan Mason, Jack Whittingham’s daughter and are a represention of the ‘First Imaginings’ of what a Bond film could look like long before production commenced on any of them. They were shown at the 1959 Venice Film Festival in a bid to raise interest for the proposed new project.

A variety of purchase options are available to choose from. Click here to view the Thunderball prints available for sale and for further details.

Literary 007 fans may recall a few of them that made their way into the first edition of The Battle for Bond by Robert Sellers.

  6. Two Latest James Bond Blu-ray Discs Reviewed

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-29
'The Man with the Golden Gun'

The Man with the Golden Gun

The two latest James Bond films to hit the Blu-ray format–Roger Moore’s The Man with the Golden Gun and Timothy Dalton’s Licence To Kill–have now been reviewed online at Blu-ray.com.

The 1974 Bond film received an overall score of 2.5 (out of five). The film by itself scored 2.0, while the video and audio quality scored 3.5 and 2.5, respectively. The extensive selection of accompanying special features scored 3.0.

The reviewer states: ‘Like it or not, the history of 007 on the silver screen does include such lemons as The Man with the Golden Gun and MGM therefore deserves praise for doing an above average job with the picture…’ [click here for the full review].

    'Licence To Kill'

    Licence To Kill

Dalton’s second 007 film fared better, coming in with a final score of 3.5 overall. A 3.0 was given to the film itself, while the video and audio scored 4.5 and 3.5. The extras received a 4.0.

‘In addition to the fine Blu-ray quality, the story, acting and production values of Licence to Kill are all fairly solid, but I find myself held back by the styles and music of the 1980s…’ [click here for the full review].

The Man with the Golden Gun and Licence To Kill on Blu-ray are due for release on 12 May in the US. Oddly, there is still no indication of their upcoming release in the UK. When we hear more, we’ll update you.

  7. Forever 21 is Selling Men's Moonraker Tees

    By Athena Stamos on 2009-04-20

Heritage 1998, a subsidiary of Forever 21, has a great item for any 007 out there who longs to wear the James Bond name loud and proud.

    Forever 21 Men's 'Moonraker' T-shirt

    Forever 21 Men’s Moonraker T-shirt

While perusing through the XXI store at Hollywood and Highland last week I came upon this men’s t-shirt. Please note that not all Forever 21 stores carry men’s clothing so before heading out the door I suggest calling ahead of time. It seems very rare that there are actually clothing items put out there for the public to purchase and although this shirt is only available for men… it still excites me and I know it will spark the interest of a number of our readers here on CBn as well.

The 007 Moonraker Tee is selling for $15.90. Available in small, medium and large. It’s a gray short sleeve 100% cotton crew neck featuring a vintage 1979 James Bond movie poster graphic depicting Roger Moore as James Bond, Lois Chiles as Dr. Holly Goodhead and Richard Kiel as Jaws. Good thing this is an officially licensed product because Eon would not be happy campers if it wasn’t.

The 007 Moonraker Tee is also available to purchase online for those of you in the United States or who don’t have an XXI store within a convenient distance from you or who just want to snag your James Bond swag the more high tech way.

  8. James Bond On Blu-ray: An Overview

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-04-04
    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

CommanderBond.net rounds up all the latest news regarding the current James Bond on Blu-ray disc releases.

The first 007 film to debut on the high-definition format was 2006’s Casino Royale upon initial release in March 2007. The first wave of past James Bond film titles was then announced by MGM and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment in mid-2008 and released in October of that year.

Recently restored and re-mastered for the highest quality picture and sound quality via the state-of-the-art Lowry process digital frame-by-frame restoration, the Blu-ray Bond titles carry over all of the special features included on the ‘Ultimate Edition’ DVD releases.
