  1. Young Bondmania!

    By johncox on 2005-01-05

Last month CBn provided details of the massive £50,000 promotional campaign for SilverFin, the first Young Bond novel by Charlie Higson. But a picture is worth a thousand words, so today CBn reveals the first photos of SilverFin promotional material and hype!

It appears Ian Fleming Publications and Puffin Books are going all out to make the launch of the Young Bond series the Bond event of 2005.

Cover art for the U.S. hardcover edition of SilverFin — the first Young Bond
novel by BBC comedy writer and thriller novelist Charlie Higson — has been revealed on Amazon.com. The image is marked “cover not final,” but it still may provide an indication of what the basic design will look like.

The cover art for the UK edition was revealed last summer and has itself gone through some subtle modifications (see: ‘SilverFin’ Cover Art Variations).

SilverFin will be released as a trade paperback in the UK by Puffin books on March 3, 2005. The U.S. hardcover edition will be released by Miramax Books on April 27.

Along with the new cover, Amazon has also posted its first “editorial” description of the book:

This thrilling prequel to the James Bond dynasty shows young James at boarding school at Eton in the 1930’s, where he spent his formative years. Acclaimed British writer Charlie Higson, with the Ian Fleming Estate, writes an edge-of-your seat thriller that brilliantly plants the seeds to show how young James learns the skills that will eventually make him history’s most formidable and suave super spy.

There are a total of five books planned in the Young Bond series. Book 2 will be released in November.

  3. Higson Talks 'SilverFin'

    By johncox on 2004-12-15

Author Charlie Higson recently spoke with Bookseller.com about his first Young Bond novel SilverFin.

“I was approached by Ian Fleming Publications, which is largely run by Ian Fleming’s nieces. They were thinking where else they could possibly take the character; it is quite hard doing adult continuation novels, and so they came up with the idea of going back in time. If you could write some good books for kids, they would then want to progress to the adult books.”

“The first thing they said was that they didn’t want a little Miss Moneypenny and a junior M–they wanted the books to be as serious as the adult novels and to be true to Ian Fleming.”

“I went back and re-read all the books to try to get the character into my head. The original James Bond was very much a fantasy version of Fleming himself, so I also read the biographies, and I tried to put something of Fleming’s own childhood into the books as well. Fleming went to Eton, but he didn’t like it very much.”

“Fleming wasn’t terribly consistent with Bond’s background. When he started, he thought he was only writing one book; it was very successful, so he wrote another and then another, and you can see him slightly changing his background in each one. He also made Bond younger, so exactly when he was born was a bit difficult to work out.”

“I wanted to show how James Bond becomes the man he does. He’s quite resourceful and tough in SilverFin, but as the series goes on he becomes tougher. I’ve given him a bit of vulnerability rather than pitching him as some kind of superkid; and in Fleming’s books he’s a more vulnerable, angst-ridden character than he is in the films.”

“I knew if we were going back to the 1930s it couldn’t be a story with skateboards and Gameboys, so I wanted these books to be much more straightforward adventure stories. My boys love the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz, but they’re very much about high-tech gadgets and whizzing round the world. SilverFin is a much more old-fashioned story about kids going off on their own and doing things, which I thought might be quite intriguing for today’s regimented kids.”

SilverFin will be released as a trade paperback in the UK by Puffin books on March 3, 2005. A hardcover edition will be released in the U.S. by Miramax books in April.

  4. 'SilverFin' 2005 Promotion Preview

Before the name became a legend
Before the boy became the man
    Meet James Bond

    The Legend begins…

Promotional material for SilverFin — the first Young Bond
novel by BBC comedy writer and thriller novelist Charlie Higson — is beginning to circulate among publishers and press, providing an early peek at what promises to be a massive launch for Ian Fleming Publications new Young Bond series in 2005.

According to publicity material, author Higson will play a major role in the “inescapable” £50,000 advertising blitz which will include large in-store displays (called dumpbins), street posters, “invincible” trade advertising, bus-supersides, and a “Young Bond privileged access microsite.”

CBn has confirmed that a second, yet-untitled, Young Bond adventure will be released in November. Also confirmed is that author Higson will read the audio book version (due for release on the same day as the UK trade edition).

Set in the 1930s, SilverFin (now being called a “prequel to the James Bond dynasty”) sees a 14-year-old James Bond investigating mysterious goings-on in a remote Scottish castle where a wealthy American is conducting some very disturbing experiments.

Interestingly enough, SilverFin will be the longest James Bond novel yet written, beating Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger by nearly 60 pages.

SilverFin will be released as a trade paperback in the UK by Puffin books on March 3, 2005. A hardcover edition will be released in the U.S. by Miramax Books in April.

  5. 'SilverFin' Cover Art Variations

    By johncox on 2004-11-14

What will the UK cover art for SilverFin — the first ‘Young Bond’ novel by BBC comedy writer and thriller novelist Charlie Higson — look like when it’s released by Puffin Books on March 3, 2005? In recent weeks, that question has become harder to answer. Keen-eyed Bond fans (okay, obsessive nuts like me) are noticing slight variations of design on images currently making the rounds online.

IFP cover art ----- Amazon.uk cover art ----- Proof cover art

The first image, released by Ian Fleming Publications in August, shows the now familiar electric eels (or whatever those are?) blue pattern artwork, and features the name of author Higson in mixed case below the SilverFin title logo. This same cover art was featured in larger resolution on Amazon.co.uk when the book first appeared for pre-order in September.

But recently Amazon replaced this art with a curious variation. While we still have the blue pattern art, Higson’s name is now missing. Also missing is the part of the SilverFin logo that notes the book as A James Bond Adventure. Instead, a tagline has been added that reads: Meet Bond. James Bond. Seeing as this art not only drops author’s name, but also the publisher’s logo, it is almost certainly NOT the artwork we will see featured on the final book. Instead what we have here is a rare promotional variant which may never appear again (save to desktop).

The Amazon variant seems to be a stepping stone to what could very well be the official final art as seen on the uncorrected proof (revealed here for the very first time). Higson’s name is back, but this time it’s in all capital letters. Also back is the full A James Bond Adventure title logo. Maybe to make doubly certain readers identify this as a James Bond book, this version also features a tagline, but now it reads: My Names is Bond, James Bond.

Set in the 1930s, SilverFin sees a 14-year-old James Bond investigating mysterious goings-on in a remote Scottish castle where a wealthy American is conducting some very disturbing experiments.

  6. Higson To Narrate 'SilverFin' Audio Book

    By johncox on 2004-10-28

The audio book version of SilverFin, the first ‘Young Bond’ novel by BBC comedy writer and thriller novelist Charlie Higson, will be narrated by the author himself…at least according to this listing on Amazon.co.uk. The audio book retails for £12.99 ($20.22 U.S.) and will be released on March 3, 2005, the same day as the UK edition.

Past James Bond audio books have been narrated by 007 veterans such as Joanna Lumley (who played one of Blofeld’s “Belles of Hell” in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) and Samantha “Moneypenny” Bond. Having the author read his own text is a first for a Bond novel, but in this case it’s a choice that makes sense. Besides being a novelist and a television writer, Higson is a talented performer, having achieved success in the BBC production The Fast Show.

Set in the 1930s, SilverFin sees a 13-year-old James Bond investigating mysterious goings-on in a remote Scottish castle where a wealthy American is conducting some very disturbing experiments. This new series of ‘Young Bond’ novels are aimed at capturing a younger demographic of Bond fan, as well as those readers who have made the Harry Potter books such an international sensation.

  9. 'Young Bond' U.S. Publisher Faces Uncertain Future

    By johncox on 2004-09-12

In June Ian Fleming Publications proudly announced that Miramax Books (the publishing division of the Disney-owned film production powerhouse Miramax) would be publishing the first two Charlie Higson ‘Young Bond’ novels; SilverFin in spring 2005, and a second yet untitled ‘Young Bond’ novel in the fall.

    ‘SilverFin’ UK Cover Art

But an article in The New York Post now questions whether or not Miramax Books will still be around in 2005.

As first reported by The Post, Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein may be on the verge of a breakup with corporate parent, The Walt Disney Co. The question on the minds of publishing world—and no doubt Ian Fleming Publications—is if Weinstein goes and Miramax folds, what happens to the Miramax book business (and Mr. Young James Bond)?

The Post article goes on to report that Miramax executives are remaining silent on the subject, but industry sources suggest there are three basic scenarios for the 4-year-old book business.

Scenario 1: Weinstein breaks with Disney, goes off on his own, and neither erstwhile partner wants to keep the book business. Disney already has one publisher—Hyperion—after all. Weinstein, by all accounts a lover of the cachet of being a publisher, and fond of books head Jonathan Burnham, is nevertheless interested in focusing on filmmaking.

Scenario 2: Weinstein leaves Miramax, and the book division is folded into the Disney empire. Miramax Books already shares distribution and other back office duties with Disney, so, some say, this would be the most seamless transition. Naysayers suggest, however, that Jonathan Burnham would be unlikely to report to Bob Miller, head of Hyperion, and might not stay. And Burnham, almost as much as Weinstein himself, is Miramax books.

Scenario 3: Weinstein leaves Miramax and takes the book business with him, which after a rocky start, has been consistently profitable. It might be possible, also, that Weinstein’s new book entity would continue to make use of some of the Disney infrastructure, but not be owned by it.

The Post reports that industry insiders say the most likely scenario is the third scenario.

It’s interesting to note that the listing for SilverFin on Amazon.com — which had shown the publisher as Disney owned Hyperion Books for Children — was recently updated to show the publisher as just Miramax Books, suggesting “scenario 3” may already be in play.
