  1. Limited edition Thunderball prints for sale

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-06-22

007 Magazine reports that several ultra-rare James Bond prints created for Kevin McClory’s ill-fated Thunderball project are now available for sale.

The prints are being sold and presented on canvas by local photographer Sylvan Mason (who was interviewed by CommanderBond.net in 2006), daughter of screenwriter Jack Whittingham.

Her website carries the following information:

In 1959, an Irish entrepreneur called Kevin McClory, envisioned the making of a movie with Ian Fleming featuring James Bond.

At a time when the first seven Fleming novels had been turned down by the top film studios of the day, for being too violent, sadistic, and unbelievable, successful novelist, Ian Fleming had wearied of writing; was ‘bereft of new ideas’, and wanted to kill Bond off and go travelling.

British screenwriter, Jack Whittingham who had just gone freelance from the Ealing Studios team, was commissioned to write a film that would be acceptable to the British public and, with Ian Fleming’s permission, took the character of James Bond and created the very first original 007 screenplay entitled Thunderball.

Thunderball, therefore, was the very first screenplay of the movie series, and should have been the first produced film, however, the making of it was halted and held up by long drawn out legal complications, and, eventually, it came out as the fourth Bond film, and the biggest in box office terms.

The series of unique pre-production storyboard drawings by Steven Grimes, John Huston’s Art Director, that adorn the walls of Fulham’s newest ‘In Place’, The Fulham Grill, were originally created for Thunderball. They are presented on canvas by local photographer Sylvan Mason, Jack Whittingham’s daughter and are a represention of the ‘First Imaginings’ of what a Bond film could look like long before production commenced on any of them. They were shown at the 1959 Venice Film Festival in a bid to raise interest for the proposed new project.

A variety of purchase options are available to choose from. Click here to view the Thunderball prints available for sale and for further details.

Literary 007 fans may recall a few of them that made their way into the first edition of The Battle for Bond by Robert Sellers.

  4. Sebastian Faulks' 'A Week In December' Slated For September

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-06-21

A new novel from James Bond centenary author Sebastian Faulks is on the horizon.

Due out this upcoming September is A Week in December. This (non-Bond) title will be the first contemporary novel written by Faulks.

A Week in December will be published in hardback by Hutchinson on 3 September in the UK. A release in the US will follow on 27 October.

    The publication blurb follows:

    Sebastian Faulks

A Week in December is Sebastian Faulks’ first wholly contemporary novel. Set in London, it’s a brilliant social satire, structured like a thriller, that takes place over the course of a single week at the end of 2007.

It brings together an intriguing cast of characters, each apparently in his or her own world but – as gradually becomes clear – ultimately intricately related. The anti-hero, John Veals, is a shadily successful and boundlessly ambitious Dickensian figure who is trading billions and other characters include a teenage Muslim fanatic, a Polish footballer, a female tube driver, a literary critic, a care worker and a chutney tycoon. As the story builds to its climax, Faulks pulls together powerful ideas about family, money, religion, and the way we live now.

  6. 'All options are open' for literary James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-06-19

‘All options are open’ for the future of the literary James Bond.

Sebastian Faulks won’t be back for Bond

That’s the quote Simon Trewin, literary agent for Ian Fleming Publications Ltd., gave to theBookseller regarding a follow-up to last year’s centenary novel, Devil May Care, by Sebastian Faulks.

Trewin stated that no new author had been signed to write a new novel and that there were ‘no firm plans at the moment’.

Faulks also confirmed that Devil May Care would be his sole contribution to the literary 007 canon, despite being given the offer to pen another. ‘My contract did offer me a second go, but definitely not,’ he said. ‘”Once funny, twice silly, three times a slap”, as the nanny saying goes. But I think it would be a good gig for someone to do.’

Sir Sean Connery has been awarded an honorary doctorate for personal achievement in his glittering career.

The Scottish actor – who found fame playing 007 in James Bond films – collected the “splendid honour” at a ceremony at Edinburgh Napier University, just a few miles from the school he left aged 13.

Connery – who scooped an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables – went on: “I know I could not be standing here today receiving this splendid honour if I had not learned to read and write at the age of five.

“What is interesting in all of this is that I never realised it until I was in my 70s.

“Being able to read and write was key to almost everything I’ve done in my life.”

The actor is a patron of Screen Academy Scotland, a joint venture between Napier and Edinburgh College of Arts to educate and train filmmaking talent.
