UPDATE: In related release date news, two other shifts have resulted in delays for the film. Quantum of Solace has been shifted to 21 November in Spain and 14 November in Mexico (the film was previously slated to open in 7 November in both territories).

This is good and bad news for me. I'm down in Australia and I have Year 11 Exams until the 21st of November, and was hoping that after they were done, I could go see the movie the first day it came out the next week. I guess not anymore.

The good news is I do get to see it earlier, and I'll be first in line on Friday to see it. It's also good that I won't have to avoid spoilers like the plague as the release dates are further together in the different countries.

There really is a God. It's now square in the middle of exam period, but odds are I'll need to take a break ...

New movie-release day is different in every country.
In many countries new movies come to the theatres on wednesday or thurday, and not on friday like in the UK and US.

And then it's impossible to do many red carped premieres with the stars of the film in every country, if they all get it on the same day. There wouldn't be an australian premiere with Daniel Craig attending when the movie came out in Australia the same day as in the UK.

What I'm wondering is if this will be the last of the release date changes for this film. It seems like more than any other recent Bond, the Quantum of Solace dates have just been moving all over the place.

A simultaneous international release might be nice, but when you really think about it, it gets ridiculously expensive for distributors.

I mean, how many countries is the film showing in? Let's just take one of them - America for argument's sake - and consider how many cinemas it's showing in. They'd have to distribute and deliver all manner of promotional material, and because it's major release, it's not just going to be a handful of posters. Banners, three-dimensional cut-outs and the like are all commonplace now, and they all have to go to every screen showing the film. And now think of all the cinemas in all the countries showing it, and there would be undre dof thousands - if not millions - of dollars invested in the actual promotional materials themselves, not to mention the costs assoicated with paying people to cut them out and ship them and the like. If they do an international release, all of that has to be at once, and while Sony have billions of dollars to throw about, they're still a business, and it's my experience that if a business can save money in any way possible, it will.

Promotional materials remain the property of the distributor even after a film has finished its theatrical run at your local cinema, and they often get returned afterwards. It wouldn't surprise me to know that the posters and cut-outs and banners and what-have-you I see when I go to my local cinema have previously been set up in other cinemas in other English-speaking countries. Staggering the relase dates cuts costs down, and while it might seem like a cup of water compared to a swimming pool, it still has an effect.

Well I would love it if QoS was moved even further forward, but 19th is better than 27th, so I will take that. Plus, as others have said, it needs to be 2 or 3 weeks after the UK premiere, because we want the stars to come down here for the Aussie premiere.
