I find it interesting that the two of them have been 'writing' their characters' back story. It's normally the job of the author who does the novelization...or the those who flesh out the treatment or screenplay. Here it seems Taubman and Amalric are enjoying getting into the guts and background of the two vilians.

Seriously, when was the last time we heard an actor being this pleased about the depth of his (henchman) character's backstory? cool.gif

When was the last time we had a henchman with such a detailed backstory? Mostly it's a case of "His name's Jaws; he kills people" and nothing more. This layer of depth that has been injected into Elvis - combined with Taubman's comments that his character is "less of a henchman and more of a secondary villain" lead me to suspect that Elvis may survive the events of Quantum of Solace where his cousin does not, and even become a recurring villain for future films. It kind of makes sense: having Bond up against a far-raching orgaisation like Quantum kind of requires some element of continuity, even if it's just a recurring character. Sure, they could write it such that "Oh, by the way, the new Big Bad is a member of Quantum", but I don't think it would go down all that well because it would feel like the films were stand-alone events with a passing reference to Quantum for the sake of establishing a story arc. To have Elvis in some kind of role like an enforcer for Quantum who keeps re-appearing and never seeming to finally die would make the storyline a lot more realistic. If Quantum is set to cover several films, then we need to see something continuous between them, and I think Elvis has been perfectly set up to do just that.

Agree with all of you regarding the mention of the Elvis backstory--really exciting stuff. Seems like there's going to be definitely more than meets the eye with this Bond henchman.

No, actors do this all the time, (well lots of them do) when they are given a script, it helps them focus on their characters as a rounded person as thy build them up in their minds.

But agreed, it’s the province of more sophisticated characterisations than you would ordinarily find in a Bond film.

Reading that, he's starting to remind me a lot of Jayne Cobb from the Firefly / Serenity 'verse: loud and unsubtle, self-centered but loyal when and where it suits him. He thinks he's the smartest guy in the universe, when most of the time people have simply led him to the answer and let him think he came up with it all on his own.

I'll really have to wait and see with Elvis... Totally unimpressed with everything I've seen and read so far...

Really my only serious doubt about QoS so far...

But today is the thirteenth...

What's got you down, MarcAnge? The actor himself, the character...?

Hey guys. Thanks for the plug. I just want to point out that it was NOT an exclusive interview with Taubman; it was a roundtable interview where, me being the Bond geek that I am, I asked about 80% of the questions. All the other outlets at that table were from outside of the U.S. and I was the only one who worked for an English-language outlet. As far as I can tell, none of these other outlets have even run anything from the Taubman interview despite the embargo being lifted weeks ago. So I just want it to be clear that while I did ask the bulk of the questions in the interview, it was not an exclusive one-on-one with him. (You can always tell because roundtable/group interviews would have the question posed as "Q: How did you get this role?", whereas exclusives should read "IGN: How did you get this role?")

Thanks as always for the plug!
