Good write up. I'd love to see the Live and Let Die cover that Fleming had drawn up. FRWL is my favorite cover of them all. There's just something about it.

Thanks K1.

I totally freaked when I saw the L&LD mock up in the Glidrose archive.

Chopping always bristled that the jackets usually said "Devised by the author, illustrated by..." but I think the statement is accurate.

I suppose today it might be called "Art Directed by" instead of devised.

I think my favorite story is about the YOLT toad. It kept hopping around apparently.

What a talented man. RIP "Dickie" Chopping.

Nice work, doublenoughtspy! thumbup.gif

Yup, the LALD-FRWL cover art is on display now as are a bunch of other rare gems.

People should try to visit the Fleming Collection - the display is only open for 2 months.

Richard Chopping was a visual stylist who gave as distinctive an identity to the literary Bond as Maurice Binder did to the film Bond.

I loved all Chopping's Bond work and may he rest in peace.

When I heard they were reissuing the Ian Fleming books for his 100th Birthday, I had hoped that the cover artwork would be a recreation of the original first editions. Always thought that would be nice.

Yeah. I thought they would do that too. There's leather bound editions out now that include those paintings on the inside of the front cover. They're like 50 bucks a pop.

ACE did you pick up the companion catalogue to the exhibition by Alan Powers? Did it contain any of the artwork on display?

I was hoping for the same. FEL released the entire series about ten years ago, duplicating every last detail of each first edition. The only difference is the small FEL stampings in obscure places made so that the books can't be passed off as actual first editions. I own a few - including CR, LALD, FRWL, GF, and one or two others - and love them. You can snatch them off ebay once in a while for about 100 bucks a book. They come in carboard sleeves decorated with the book covers, and are about as close to the actual first editions as many of us will ever be able to afford.
