James Bond has a Coke problem

Moviehole's Charley Bowdrie shared a carrot stick with one of the chaps working on "Quantum of Solace" - that'd be the new Jimmy Bond flick - and found out a couple of interesting titbits.

Firstly, Coke will make an appearance in the film - and I'm not referring to the nose accessory.

"They have a Coke Zero product placement but only use CANS, which was in discussion as cans aren't classy, bottles are - HOWEVER Sony have always digitally changed cans into bottles and also the brand pending on the territory they're selling to. As we know already, Branson's Virgin Group are already in place. What on Earth are we going to see, a Jim Bond swigging from a can of Coke and driving a beaten up ole Ford Escort on his way to a package holiday to Orlando via Virgin Atlantic?", asks Charley.

Oh, and here's the good stuff...
Though we're both a little unsure whether this is correct, the source informed Charley that after the theatrical release of "Quantum of Solace", the rights to the Bond series revert back to Twentieth Century Fox.

"D'you think that's why [Sony are] sticking the stories so tight together, ala Bourne, so Daniel Craig definitely gets a look-in for a third and isnt replaced?", asks Charley.

I'd say the source is referring to the fact that, in most territories, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have begun distributing MGM product again. But I could be wrong.

James Bond drinking a can of Coke Zero?? eek.gif No, no, no... No way! I'm not hearing that!
I guess he'll jus blast a lorry full of Coke Zero cans (like with Perrier in Goldeneye)... Which would be fully deserved! biggrin.gif

The blog from the extra in Panama mentioned something about...
Coke Zero cans being visible behind the bar during Dominic Greene's party
Perhaps that's the extent of the product placement. Hopefully, anyway.

They were visible in the Entertainment tonight footage. Great "scoop" there, moviehole.

I expect that will be the extent of it.

He means Twentieth Century Fox have begun distributing MGM product again, not Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, they don’t theatrically distribute films as the name suggests.

I doubt we'll see Bond himself taking a slug from a can of Coke Zero (though it's hilarious to imagine), so I don't see a big deal. It's a real product that real people drink (I happen to, myself), so I don't see any issue.

But what's this "back to 20th C. Fox" deal? And is that scooper just trying to generate hype by making it sound like Craig's tenure could be in jeopardy? Sounds like a load of bull, to quote a mastermind. tongue.gif No idiot in their right mind would want Craig to stop playing Bond now. At least no idiot outside CNB.

It wouldn't be a James Bond adventure starring Daniel Craig without some controversy!

I just wished there were no product placement at all.

But I think that's utopic. I can only hope it is done the most subtle way possible.

Certainly consistent w/ the original Ian Fleming, who used "product placements" to enhance the reality of his novels. And, if memory serves, didn't Honey drink a Coke provided by Doctor No in the book?
