Fascinating article. I've been to Hong Kong twice, but it never even occurred to me that Hai Fat's place might be there.
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN is actually my favourite Bond film. I don't say it's the best (that would be CASINO ROYALE) - although it's not far off - but it's certainly my favourite. Anyway, great piece - cheers for putting it up here. |

Can't believe it's next to a busy road and hemmed in by skyscrapers, but there's the magic of the movies for you, I guess. I assume you understand that the busy road and skyscrapers came a few years later.. There's also a funny enigma attached to this story, of particular interest to fans from Belgium: On the piece of grass Bond walks when he approaches the pool, I stumbled upon a very familiair little statue of a peeing boy.. Ring a bell? Even Cynthia couldn't explain the presence of 'Manneken Pis' in a Hong Kong designer garden, but was very keen on finding out why her uncle had that particular statue placed in the garden.. I am still waiting for the results of her investigation.. ![]() |

After all, it's not a stretch to imagine busy roads and skyscrapers in Hong Kong in the 1970s. |

After all, it's not a stretch to imagine busy roads and skyscrapers in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Your right about that.. Except in this case the location is about an hour outside the 'centre' of Hong Kong (if there is any) and the development around this area is pretty recent. But still it is hard to imagine the road in front of the estate is the same one as Bond and Hip walked upon in the film.. But you should absolutely try to go there the next time you're in Hong Kong, Loomis. Well worth the journey.. ![]() |
