http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol...icle1877785.ece QUOTE("timesonline") “Well,” he says. “I did give up directing the Bond film. And it wasn’t quite $8 million but it was a lot of money. It was because in the end I didn’t feel comfortable with the Bond process, and I was very nervous that there was a start date but really no script at all. And I like to be very well prepared as a director.
“The Bond people – who are lovely – are used to going into these massive productions in quite a chaotic way: ‘Oh, we’ll fix that later.’ I panicked about this. And it was starting to make me feel very, very unhappy about what I was doing and who I was. The more the money went up, the worse it made me feel. “I felt a bit like the character in Landscape with Weapon [a weapons designer who pulls out of a massive payday after he gets cold feet about his work] and a little bit like Doctor Faustus, and just decided eventually that I’d be doing it for the wrong reasons. I’d be doing it for my friendship with Daniel Craig. I’d be doing it for the money. And not really because I yearned to do it.” So, after months of talks, late last year Michell pulled out of directing the follow-up to Casino Royale. And shoved off to Kilburn. ![]() |

Kudos to him for leaving the project as early as he did instead of just going through the motions and churning out a film that his heart wasn't in, which probably would've shown through in the quality.

I think the trouble for the directors of Bond movies is that it's not really their own vision, it Babs' an Michael's, so theres only so much you can do without compromising what BB and MGW want. Im not knockin this at all, im glad that its in good hands but as a director you're buyin into someone elses vision instead of your own - which is why I think Mitchell took off wen he did.

Very interesting.
Imagine Michael Apted's reaction on being offered a Bond! Good that they even considered him. If the Marc Foster reports are true, he must be going through a similar balancing process now. ![]() |

I would love Forster to direct. It'll be really interesting to see what happens. Forster has a pretty unique and desirable vision so if he does come on board I will feel more hopeful for Bond 22.

I'm thoroughly happy with Barbara's and Michael's vision in cahoots with Craig. I don't want any directors cocking things up in the Craig era.
I saw MI2 on tv yesterday and the finale' was sooo hideous with the awful slo mo shots of Cruise, etc. Thank goodness the likes of John Woo will never helm a Bond picture. The other thing about Mitchell is what I said in march and that is he probably is too intimidated by having to helm a $150 million plus production. He can only have a downside if he screws it up and has no confidence to pull it off. Perhaps his backside was perspiring at the thought of cocking it up. (Forgive the pun). ;-) |

Wonder if he'd reconsider/be in the mix now...that the script is done (first draft, and Haggis polishing) and the release date has been pushed back from when he was initially being courted?

Gee, he just is no director who can take on a big budget extravaganza. That´s alright. But why does he keep talking about it? Milking the press for his own sake...
