Now on the CBn main page...
CASINO ROYALE has amassed a surprising NINE nominations at this year's BAFTA nominations. Though I actually make it TEN*. BEST BRITISH FILM BEST ACTOR BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY BEST MUSIC BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN BEST EDITING BEST SOUND BEST VISUAL EFFECTS This is is superb result for Eon Productions and not only supports their efforts with CASINO ROYALE, but all the other films as a whole. Whilst I have a feeling that BAFTA - which as an organisation is obsessed with matching the Oscars and being hip and cool - has achieved exactly that with these nominations. That is not to diminish CASINO ROYALE's chances one bit. It will do well in some of the technical categories and Eva Green could pip Ben Wishaw past the post. What do people think? And where does this leave 007 at the Oscars? I have my feelings on that one (i.e. one or two technical nods...), but for now this is a great result and vindication for Eon. However, it has extremely stiff opposition (why is the awards season so rife with jargon and cliches...?!). [* Eva Green's nomination for Rising Star - which she wouldn't have got this year had it not been for CASINO ROYALE - surely makes it ten nominations for BOND 21? Oscar wise, I think CR could be nominated for some of the technical awards.
But like you say, fornow, this is a great result. Well done! ![]() Some people just want to watch the world burn.

absolutely!
BEST BRITISH FILM - definately but this is possibly because there isnt another contender!!! BEST ACTOR - absolutely, DC portrays JB007 perfectly - to the book and deserves to win it. be nice to get all the others but not sure... Shame Martin Campbell not up for best director he deserves it, though he did win best drama series in 1985 for edge of darkness. |

Hugely impressive. I can actually see Craig winning- it seems fairly open in his category. Amazing stuff for Bond.

Maths was never my strong point, but I make CASINO ROYALE's nomination tally as ten and not nine. Eva Green's Rising Star Award nomination (which she wouldn't have got this year without Bond) surely brings the tally to ten, no? And this Rising Star Award (one that is a tad redundant to be fair - ALL the nominees in this category have been starring in films for a few years now...)

Eva Green's Rising Star Award nomination (which she wouldn't have got this year without Bond) surely brings the tally to ten, no? And if the BAFTAS are still doing the Audience Award (where the public gets to vote for its favourite film on the night), this sort of puts CASINO ROYALE in running for 11 BAFTA Awards this year, no.....? Yes! to both. I hope for an Oscar nod though. I say that realizing that the Oscars are very political and not based on merit in many cases. ![]() You like wild things don't you, Mr. Bond, James Bond?

And where does this leave 007 at the Oscars? Interesting question, and some US critcs are actually pushing for Craig to be recognised: From the San Francisco Chronicle: Daniel Craig for a Best Actor nomination From G. Allen Johnson of The Chronicle staff With just a few days to go until votes for Oscar nomination are due, let me make a last-minute push for what on the surface might seem a laughable candidate -- but bear with me! I am speaking of one Daniel Craig as James Bond 007 in "Casino Royale," and I am not joking. Craig has entirely remade the concept of James Bond as a character, and with 40 years of prehistory, that's hard to do. His Bond was not only totally unlike the performances of the five actors who had played Bond before him, but it was a fully realized character, with emotions, tough choices and real acting involved. Plus, "Casino Royale" is a fine film, co-written by Oscar-winner Paul Haggis and featuring an excellent supporting performance from another Oscar-winner, Judi Dench, among others. I am not suggesting that Craig win the Oscar -- that should be Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland." But Craig should be one of the five nominated. Can you name five better, more charismatic and riveting male performances in a 2006 movie? . . .There is precedent for Craig, both in perfecting a role previously played by others and as an action star. For one, O'Toole was nominated for playing Henry II in "The Lion in Winter" in 1968 just four years after many thought Richard Burton defined the role in "Becket." For two, Sigourney Weaver was nominated as the hero of a kick- So don't be shy, voters! On your ballots, the name is Craig. Daniel Craig. Orlando Sentinel: As a movie fan who's going to have to wade through hours of Oscar speculation and as a TV critic who'll have to watch the winners (and nominees) in the years ahead on television, I have to get this off my chest. Why isn't there a chorus of support for the actor who had the most difficult role this year, finessed the challenge, silenced his severest critics and revived a whole movie franchise? When it comes to delivering, Daniel Craig was the real deal as James Bond in "Casino Royale." A star was born. He had to deal with the memory of Sean Connery and all the other Bonds. In the end, Craig came through, brilliantly. But he wasn't mentioned in the Golden Globe nominations. And I fear he's going to be forgotten at Oscar time. Other actors are adopting accents and shedding tears, and they'll probably be recognized for their ACTING. That style of ACTING announces itself and demands prizes. But that acting doesn't age very well, either. Craig reminds me of Cary Grant, who never won a competitive Oscar. Compare Craig's Bond with Grant's performance in Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious." As Bond, Craig was subtle, sexy, surprising. He's probably be penalized for making it all look too easy. But he shouldn't be forgotten. Chicago Tribune: Bond, Oscar Bond Mark Caro Pop Machine A Chicago Tribune Web log Originally posted: December 21, 2006 There’s one performance that hasn't been recognized by any movie critics group or awards organization despite being one of the year’s most widely praised. Where’s the year-end love for Daniel Craig, a.k.a. Agent 007 in “Casino Royale”? Here’s a guy who was widely dismissed and even ridiculed upon being cast in this iconic role, yet the consensus is he’s the best James Bond since Sean Connery and perhaps the closest one to author Ian Fleming’s original vision. Craig’s performance is emotional, physical and charismatic as hell; you can't ask much more of an actor. His burning presence has helped the movie earn 95 percent positive reviews (according to RottenTomatoes.com) while grossing more than $400 million worldwide and reviving a stale series. Who could you imagine doing better? Oscar winners Sean Penn or Russell Crowe? Right. Just because Craig isn’t in a self-serious film doesn’t mean he hasn’t done a slam-bang acting job. Give the guy some kudos. You've got to think they do actually have a point, but as one says Oscar judges are always blinded by an accent, pretending to be disabled or an attractive person being happy to look ugly. Great movie acting? Hmph. |

I know Bond's always looked over when it's come to the Oscars, but has a Bond actor ever been nominated? Not for the part of Bond. Connery is the only one who has come close with a Supporting Actor trophy for THE UNTOUCHABLES. The last time a Bond film was nominated for an Oscar was Sheena Easton et al for FOR YOUR EYES ONLY's title track. Obviously Judi Dench won a Supporting trophy for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, HALLE BERRY got an Actress nod for MONSTERS BALL and CHRISTOPHER WALKEN won Supporting Actor for THE DEER HUNTER. There may be more, but Daniel Craig's BAFTA nomination for CASINO ROYALE is as near as 007 himself has got so far to sharing his mantelpiece with erect gold men and Walther PPKs.... This is indeed incredible. Didn't happen to DIE ANOTHER DAY, did it? Or to THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. Or to TOMORROW NEVER DIES. Or to any of them. Wow. Another sweet slap in the face for the Craig-/CASINO ROYALE-haters.
BTW, can't wait to see THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. |

THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND... isn't that Sean Connery's self-produced, self-written and self-congratulatory biopic of ...er, Sean Connery?! Seriously, I'd imagine Forest Whittaker will sweep quite a few statuettes for LAST KING including the BAFTA from Miss Craig. |

[/quote] Daniel Craig is the first actor to get a Bafta-Nomination for playing Bond - guess that's already quite an achievment?! |
