Hi JC, see below, for an extract i posted recently.

'In the UK the film could get very close to $100 mil total,
this weekend, though i expect to see this mark passed early next week,
and then surpass 'Pirates' by the end of next weekend'.

See below extract from 'Variety'

"Casino Royale" shows little sign of letting up its assault on the U.K. box office. It leapt 40% in its seventh frame last weekend despite losing 12% of its screens and is on track to becoming the highest grossing film released in 2006.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" finished up with 52.5 million ($102 million) but Bond is on its tail with a running cume of $98.2 million as of Jan. 4.

NOTE:

The $99,334,229 figure quoted from Variety is their running
total figure, not the cumalative figure.
I know its confusing, not exactly sure myself what that means,
but i think its something to do with the difference in exchange
rates from week to week and how they add up overall.

WHATEVER: CR has been a massive success in the UK

Interesting that (according to Variety) POTC:DMC only made $97.2 Million in the UK...

So (at least according to Variety) CR has already beaten it (in the UK)!!

YES your right, in reality CR has already passed POTC,
because when Pirates was playing in the summer the exchange rate
was lower, hence Pirates actually made around $98 mil, but people
are using the current exchange rate to convert Pirates: pounds sterling
earnings into US dollars when making comparisons against CR, which
gives Pirates a total of around $102 mil.

Doesn't matter though, as CR is still going like an express train at the UK
cinemas.

I believe CR is now at $99.1 million in the UK, according to Variety's latest numbers.

An extract from 'Variety'

"Casino Royale" continues to delight Brit auds. It slipped just 26% in its seventh frame en route to a $100.4 million running cume. The pic looks nailed on to become the top-grossing pic released in 2006. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" currently wears the crown with a $101.8 million final cume.

The way the pound-dollar exchange rates vary daily........gives rise to inconsistent
boxoffice figures. At the end of Sunday, boxoffice sources had CR at a fraction
below $100mil. As of writing this article, CR has played a futher 3 days, so one can
assume that $100mil has now been passed in th UK........anyway the report above says so.

Any idea how Studios/the prints etc. get their estimates?

All i know is that all boxoffice figures are accumalated by a company
called Nielson EDI in the US, though they have offices around the world.
This is where the film media get their figures from.

In regards to estimates, in the US for example, boxoffice analysts can predict
pretty well what a films weekend boxoffice performance will be just by looking
at the figures for Friday & Saturday, they then get some intial feedback early
on Sundays from the theatres i believe, to make an estimate.

If you notice for instance, US boxoffice sources give out their weekend estimates
at around 8.00pm GMT (UK time), and consider that the West coast of the USA is what
some 8 hours behind us, then in effect thay are giving out their estimates at around
midday, so therefore the Sunday takings are not known.

An interesting reversal of phrase. While (logically) correct, was it intentional?
