7. "Casino Royale." I haven't enjoyed a James Bond movie this much since the earliest Sean Connery editions, before the franchise went all high-tech and started casting dandies like Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. Short and pugnacious as he is, Daniel Craig is a real 007. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainmen...inmentfront-hed "Casino Royale" (U.S./U.K./Germany/Czech Republic; Martin Campbell). Bond resurgent. I've always been a Sean Connery loyalist, but the new guy, Daniel Craig, had me convinced in the first 10 minutes. http://www.moviehole.net/news/20061224_cli...10_of_2006.html 5. Casino Royale - The real stars of "Casino Royale" though are screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade & Paul Haggis, and director Martin Campbell. The screenplay is sensational - its funny (lines like "What I understand, double-ohs have a very short life expectancy" are priceless), its romantic, its dramatic, its action, it's very in-jokey (you learn how Bond discovered his drink of choice, for instance), but most of all, it keeps you interested. And if you're ever going to try and re-invent Bond, you get the guy that did "Goldeneye" (1995), Martin Campbell. Campbell knows how to breathe life into a struggling franchise, and does it again here with flying colours. He's inserted the exhilaration back into the series. The guy knows what makes a good Bond movie. He really does. http://nwitimes.com/articles/2006/12/24/en...24b00000d93.txt "Casino Royale" -- All those naysayers who questioned the selection of Daniel Craig as the new James Bond have been duly silenced. He's raw, reckless and intense in this prequel, which sheds new light on the iconic character by showing his darker side. Martin Campbell's direction is both fluid and explosive, and the sultry Eva Green is no mere Bond girl. This isn't just the rejuvenation of a flagging franchise, it's a high-voltage jump start. The year's best blockbuster. http://www.sundayherald.com/culture/film/d...1089923.0.0.php Casino Royale: I would never have imagined a Bond film making my top 10 list. But Casino Royale deserves a spot, for the sheer courage behind its franchise revamp - and the success of its delivery. It was also head and shoulders above the year's other blockbuster efforts - Mission: Impossible 3, The Da Vinci Code and Pirates Of The Caribbean 2. This was a back-to-basics Bond, doing away with the gadgets and ludicrous scenarios, and introducing Daniel Craig as a younger, more rough-edged agent. "Blond Bond" Craig proved to be the best since Connery - cruel, cocky, sexy, funny and totally buffed up. The bone-crunchingly realistic action scenes were accompanied by a pleasing fidelity to the card games and testicle-bashing of Fleming's novel. Casino Royale ensured that, for the first time anyone can remember, at the end of a Bond film we're actually looking forward to the next. http://www.ew.com/ew/article/commentary/0,...37_1_0_,00.html Stephen King in EW: 4. Casino Royale I came out of the theater thinking it was the best Bond since Goldfinger. A subsequent viewing of Goldfinger - for this column - has convinced me it's the best Bond ever. http://theedge.bostonherald.com/movieRevie...rticleid=173624 5. Casino Royale: Bond gets rebooted in the form of Steve McQueen-ish Daniel Craig in this taut, well-cast and beautifully made addition to the 40-year-plus franchise. http://www.capitalnews9.com/content/headli...75&SecID=33 Casino Royale was the best 007 film I've seen in thirty years. No gimmicks, no silly quips and a real story for a change, with a believable, vulnerable character. Daniel Craig was tremendous and breathed new life into the once archaic franchise. ![]() AWARD FOR NERDIEST FAN FICTION: In Jacques Stewart's magnum opus Just Another Kill, Bond contemplates eating his victim: "Meat. All the man was. All the man would be. Lowering his right eye (?) to the greased rim of the sniper's glass, James Bond rationalised, so far as he needed to, that meat was all that the man, still standing on the shoreline, had ever been." And it goes ON! Thanks Jacques Stewart, you meathead!

A reasonable year for blockbusters - all things considered - was rounded off in style just a few weeks ago when Daniel Craig gave Bond a much needed shot in the arm. Looking like he could kick the christmas stuffing out of a few supermen, he added a delightful bit of grit into the blend of girls and gadgets in Casino Royale. The last big one of the year, and OMH's favourite. ![]() AWARD FOR NERDIEST FAN FICTION: In Jacques Stewart's magnum opus Just Another Kill, Bond contemplates eating his victim: "Meat. Boxofficemojo however is contradicting Variety's figure, quoting Casino Royale worldwide box office take much lower at $423,393,658.
So, I guess you believe whichever figure, depending on your point of view of the movie. ![]() ![]() Robert Brown was Admiral Hargreaves in TSWLM, OP, AVTAK, TLD and LTK damnit Enforcer, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Roger Moore Proud defender of Barbara Bach, Carole Bouquet, Barbara Carrera, Maryam D'Abo, A View to a Kill, Never Say Never Again and The Spy Who Loved Me. |

"'Casino Royale' Bond is back. Daniel Craig is a Bond for the new millenium. 'Nuff said." http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=18089 Casino Royale (Sony) - The promising notion of a James Bond reboot starring Daniel Craig delivered in spades (diamonds, clubs and hearts, too) due to its combination of an intelligent script and an amazing international cast that featured Eva Green and Mads Mikkelsen. Throwing the normal 007 playbook out the window, director Martin Campbell delivered the best Bond movie in at least 20 years or more, bringing Bond into the present day with a storyline involving terrorists and Texas Hold 'Em poker, and the only high-tech gadgets being cell phones and laptops! http://www.qgazette.com/news/2006/1227/movie_review/ "Casino Royale" took James Bond back to his roots. This is a gritty, basic, minimum gadget thriller. Daniel Craig may be the best Bond since Sean Connery. If you're a fan you owe it to yourself to see this one on a big screen. http://www.movieweb.com/news/16/16616.php #6 -- Casino Royale - Craig, Daniel Craig. 007 is reborn in the best Bond film in thirty years. http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/20...z/index_np.html Cinema to savor Salon's critic picks the movies that mattered, from the extraordinary OutKast musical "Idlewild" to the imaginative Bond adventure "Casino Royale." ![]() AWARD FOR NERDIEST FAN FICTION: In Jacques Stewart's magnum opus Just Another Kill, Bond contemplates eating his victim: "Meat. Wow! The last time I know of a Bond film making a critic's top 10 film was Thunderball(another great classic Bond film that was faithful to the source novel) on Bosley Crowther's NY Times list for 1965. I don't even think The Sound of Music or Doctor Zhivago made that list that year but Thunderball did.
