[sub]The results of CBn survey of its members
to find the 50 greatest moments of
James Bond movies, books, and videogames[/sub]

Over the past couple of weeks, CBn has been running an online survey to try to establish what its members consider to be the "Best of Bond". Members were encouraged to PM me with their choice of top 3 Bond moments from the books, the films, the videogames - moments that typify Bond for them, or perhaps moments personal to them and standing out in their memories.

Thank you to everyone who voted: as it turns out, 49 suggestions had at least 2 votes, with a handful gathering one vote each. Where moments received an equal number of votes, the eventual order was achieved via a highly sophisticated flip of a coin.

I hope I've transcribed everyone's comments accurately into this run-through; I have not identified the voters but you're welcome to if you recognise yourself.

On a personal level, there's nothing here I can disagree with and, for purely selfish reasons, many of these selections remind me why I am a Bond fan in the first place.

Again, many thanks for taking part to those who did; for those who did not, enjoy anyway!

Anyway, on with places 39-30

Jim

“I could shoot you from Stuttgart und still create ze desired effect…”

Dr Kaufmann’s bedside manner needs work: Tomorrow Never Dies

“Crappy way for Bond to get out of trouble when he does, but up to then a really funny and tense scene; film Bond in a nutshell. But the videotape makes it look really old now!”

“Great dialogue here. You end up feeling sorry for Dr Kaufmann! OK maybe not.”

“Some good moments in this film and this is really enjoyable.”

“I know I’ll never find another girl like you…”

Bond proposes: OHMSS

“Speaks for itself. Lazenby and Rigg are really good in this scene.”

“Probably isn’t a “Best Bond Moment” because it’s not really typical of Bond! But if you go with the idea that under it all, he’s a nice sort of guy and a realistic one, this is a really good scene. If you want him machine gunning everything, probably not so great.”

“Only James Bond proposes in – effectively – the middle of a chase scene.”

“Ah sure am, boy…!”

Bond flips the AMC; penny-whistle sales tumble: The Man with the Golden Gun

“Crappy sound effect but a brilliant stunt. Bond; only Bond.”

“Pity it’s in this film but it’s a great stunt, one of the best.”

“Still amazing. If you freeze the DVD halfway through there’s just this car hanging upside down in mid-air and it doesn’t look like it will make it but it does, every time.”

“…and still nothing on the radar scanner…”

The Space Station (just accept it) is slowly revealed: Moonraker

“Beautiful, and even better on the UE DVD. Music is amazing. Most underrated film ever.”

“The journey into space scenes – a stupid idea but well done. Music and visuals are brilliant.”

“Film is terrible but there are a load of little moments in it that are superb.”

“Well, there was this girl in Philadelphia…”

Fatima Blush gets a hot flush: Never Say Never Again

“Too cool for school; Connery still had it.”

“Bad film; great scene. It was only worth remaking Thunderball for this bit and this nearly makes the whole thing worthwhile. Including Pussy Galore, was there ever really a more "Bond" name than 'Fatima Blush'?”

“Barbara Carrera is really funny here. The exploding pen is crap, but funny crap.”

“…what we need is a location fix on 007…”

Tracy overtakes, Bond pursues: OHMSS

“Lighting a cigarette while driving a car for connoisseurs in a winding road. It simply oozes style!”

“Just how I imagined it from the book. And then loads of the rest of the film is too. Very Bond.”

“Just the look of it; really darkly photographed (is that an odd reason?) – we’re getting something new here.”

“You wouldn’t… not after we…”

Bond interrogates Rosie Carver in his own unique way: Live and Let Die

“For those who say Moore was too lightweight, check out this scene and try to say that a man who coldly replies he wouldn't have killed the woman he just slept with before they had sex is in any way lightweight.”

“Way harder than Connery; OK, Connery may have slapped women – often - but he wasn’t so nasty as to use them. Bond at his cruellest, and it comes from Quiche Boy. Who would think that?”

“When he pulls the gun on Rosie – all the way up to this scene you’ve been thinking Bond’s in danger and screaming at him not to believe it and now we see that he knew it all along and couldn’t care less. What a guy.”

“If I trusted Koskov, we wouldn’t be talking…”

Bond and Pushkin share a hotel room: The Living Daylights

“It’s Bond as a ruthless agent. Moore's script was supposed to have it played across a table from each other. Here it is violent and in-your-face.”

“Timothy Dalton is James Bond 007. You’d think Fleming had written this.”

“Bond goes back to being a spy; Bond films are always good when he does that.”

“Then he looked again at Bond and spoke very quietly, the red moustache lifting slowly from the splayed upper teeth.

“’I should spend the money quickly , Commander Bond,’ he said.

“Then he turned away from the table and walked swiftly out of the room.”

Bond cheats the cheat: Moonraker

“Pure Bond. You could feel Drax’s reaction. The best gambling sequence of any Bond medium. And I learned the rules of Bridge in the process.”

“After an enjoyably over-the-top dinner with M, I was perfectly primed for a champagne and benzedrine-laced showdown at the gaming table. Wonderfully executed by Mr. Fleming. Bravo to him again.”

“Yes, the Casino Royale card game was good, but in this one, Bond gets high on Benzedrine, smashed on champagne, and rigs the game. Fun for the whole family!”

“Let me go…! There’s a bomb in there!”

The clowning around has to stop sometime: Octopussy

“Tense, to the final click. Not a great film but a top moment.”

“Much as I love the Bond films, there have been few moments when I've actually been on the edge of my seat. This, however, is one of them. In an odd way, the fact that it's in a circus, with Bond having to evade the performers as well as the guards, makes it that much more tense. It's somehow scarier that, while the bomb ticks down, people are laughing at Bond as well as trying to wrestle him to the ground. It's also good to see a strong female lead who isn't annoying or completely one-dimensional stepping in to help Bond, before letting him get on with the most important work. Definitely the best suspense sequence in the series.”

“Roger Moore in a nutshell – loads of stupid and then something dark. Impact gets lost because of ten more endings but it’s a goodie, a real goodie.”

"There was a violent cruelty, a pathological desire to wound, quite near the surface in the man."

That's my comment in red. What fun to read these. Great idea, Jim.

Good to see that two other CBners agreed with me. That's my quote at the top.

There's some more good choices. My favorite of this pack would have to be the 360-degree barrel roll jump from The Man With The Golden Gun. Simply a fantastic stunt.

No more foreplay.
Speak now or forever hold your piece.
I think he got the point.
Looks like he came to a dead end.
He had lots of guts!
Yes, considerably.

Glad to hear other members voted it too. My comment on the top.
Still one of my favourite scenes ever, and a hell of a great introduction for Lazenby.
