[sub]The results of CBn survey of its members
to find the 50 greatest moments of
James Bond movies, books, and videogames[/sub]

Over the past couple of weeks, CBn has been running an online survey to try to establish what its members consider to be the "Best of Bond". Members were encouraged to PM me with their choice of top 3 Bond moments from the books, the films, the videogames - moments that typify Bond for them, or perhaps moments personal to them and standing out in their memories.

Thank you to everyone who voted: as it turns out, 49 suggestions had at least 2 votes, with a handful gathering one vote each. Where moments received an equal number of votes, the eventual order was achieved via a highly sophisticated flip of a coin.

I hope I've transcribed everyone's comments accurately into this run-through; I have not identified the voters but you're welcome to if you recognise yourself.

On a personal level, there's nothing here I can disagree with and, for purely selfish reasons, many of these selections remind me why I am a Bond fan in the first place.

Again, many thanks for taking part to those who did; for those who did not, enjoy anyway!

Anyway, on with places 49-40

Jim

“It’s another spaceship…”

S.P.E.C.T.R.E. say “Hiya” in the most extraordinarily flamboyant way imaginable: You Only Live Twice

“You get why this made such an impression on people – great music, really weird idea. OK the SFX look bad now but they tried. And then Bond dies.”

“The whole time I was thinking this was the first Bond movie I would see without my dad.”

“Ha hahaha hhhhaaaHAAAA!”

Baron Samedi says hello, waves goodbye: Live and Let Die

“Weirdest ending to a Bond film ever. I remember being so scared when I first saw it.”

“Bring Back The Baron!”

“What a helpful chap.”

Sandor molests Bond’s tie, but not for long: The Spy who Loved Me

“Don’t think much of the fight but this is a hell of a moment. Really brutal when you think about it but then think about it some more and Sandor did shoot that woman earlier so he probably deserved it.”

“Moore had bad moments but he had great moments and in those great moments he’s undoubtedly James Bond.”

“Don’t move, Meester Bond…”

A nice day at the beach turns sour: OHMSS

“Lazenby demonstrates why James Bond is the most dangerous man in the world. A fight that spans land, sea, and with the help of a trampoline, air. Multiple weapons (gun, knife, oar, anchor, nets, etc.) As Premiere Magazine says (when awarding Lazenby as the best fighter of the Bond actors) "He doesn't just fight them - he beats the **** out of them and drowns them.”

“Smash, crash and splash. Pretty girl, handsome man, great locations, anonymous thugs, funny payoff: about as James Bond as it gets.”

“…bitten by the bug.”

Wint, Kidd, Dr Tynan, a scorpion, a killing: Diamonds are Forever

“Really nasty, hahaha. Nastier in the deleted version too!”

“God what a way to die. Like the ejector seat in Goldfinger – you know it’s coming but you want to see it anyway. The Bond films often do this – give you what you want and you enjoy it anyway.”

44

(2 votes)

“If only I could find a real man…”

You’ve got to admire his timing: The Living Daylights

“The conclusion of Dalton's pre-title sequence that says "James Bond is back", he's wearing black, he's shagging a babe on a boat, and manages to tell us how many Bond films he will be making. Brilliant.”

“Bond lands on boat and meets a hot hunny.”

“Actions speak louder than words…”

Magda unbundles off a balcony: Octopussy

“This just wouldn’t happen in any other type of film. Stupid, but it’s so Bond.”

“Pretty girl beds Bond, steals something valuable from him and then leaps off a balcony. The Roger Moore glossy “high living” years of Bond – if you don’t like them you don’t like them but I love them!”

“Everyone agreed that Grant was an exceedingly dangerous member of society and that he should be put away.

“When the dossier came before the Head of Personnel of the MGB, he was about to write Kill him in the margin when he had second thoughts…”

SMERSH’s lethal weapon is introduced: From Russia with Love

“Colour me morbid but I was fascinated by Mr. Grant's psychopathology, especially his moon-induced bouts of the feelings. Also found myself very entertained by the bit wherein Mr. Grant's SMERSH superiors turned him loose on prison inmates. Such lovely sport.”

“Bond doesn’t appear for half the book, but you’re gripped and the description of Red Grant and his habits is the most gripping bit: this is what Fleming does so well.”

“Straight up… with a twist.”

Bond and Xenia "do flirting": GoldenEye

“Some of us had waited a lot of our adult life to see this – Pierce as Bond, delivering the “Bond … James Bond” line, ordering a martini, playing a beautiful woman at a card game in a casino, just had a car chase – it was James Bond, all over again. Great. You know why people saw this film.”

“More than in the Dalton films, they look as if they’re enjoying themselves. They have “F*** me I’m in a Bond film” expressions on their faces. If you were to explain to an alien what Bond is, show him this.”

“Make a sound and you’re dead…”

Bond introduces Lupe to his blade: Licence to Kill

“Only four years earlier they made A View to a Kill. Jesus. Dalton’s great in this scene and he’s channelling a really hard bastard; Fleming’s Bond is back!”

“I thought it was horrible when I first saw it; I read some of the books and now I see what they were trying to do. Great, hard scene.”

“Bond is a nasty bastard. Because he is a nasty bastard. Timothy Dalton was ahead of his time.”

Just wondering if it shouldn't be 50-41...?

Otherwise, where's 50?

(Feel free to scrub this post if, as and when.)

50 will be open to a poll vote at the end, made up of those that only got one vote each (there are about 9 moments).

Method in madness, promise yer.

Great idea Jim, thanks for doing this. It's great fun reading these and I'm looking forward to the continuing 'countdown'.

Out of curiousity, how many members submitted their top 3?...

Pleasantly surprised to find someone agreed with my choice. That's my comment in the red text.

Some great moments in here. I was expecting to see ones such as the Sandor/Bond fight, but it's cool to see some unexpected ones (IMO of course) such as the You Only Live Twice spaceship bit. Can't wait to see the others.

Some good choices here, as well as responses. My favorite moment of these nine is Bond swatting away his tie from Sandor. A neat and clever ending to a Bond fight.

No more foreplay.
Speak now or forever hold your piece.
I think he got the point.
Looks like he came to a dead end.
He had lots of guts!
Yes, considerably.
