> List Your (least) Favourite Bond-movie By Director
Sir Robert King
Cadet

Group: Crew
Enlisted: 7 January 2004
From: Göttingen, Germany

Ok, several directors directed multiple entries in the series:

Terence Young: DN, FRWL, TB
Guy Hamilton: GF, DAF,LALD,TMWTGG
Lewis Gilbert: YOLT;TSWLM; MR
John Glen: FYEO, OP, AVTAK, TLD, LTK

The others only did one (so far).

What was the best bond-movie of the resp. director?

My take:
Terence Young: TB
Hamilton: GF
Gilbert: TSWLM
Glen: LTK

And since we are at it:
What´s the worst?

My take:
Young: FRWL
Hamilton: DAF
Gilbert: YOLT
Glen: FYEO

As for worst, I tend to like something about even the low-end Bond films, but I still find LALD and AVTAK somewhat underwhelming, so those would be my worst choices for direction...

I'm basing the directors on my list purely by their direction and what they brought to their films. For instance, I find FRWL to be a better film than Dr. No, but Terence Young's direction and style implemented on the first 007 film is the better of the two jobs. My comments on the films are in italics below.

BEST:
Terence Young (Dr. No)
(Set the style for the Bond films in so many ways.)
Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day)
(Lee, in many ways, reinvented the classic James Bond film with color and glamour. Some gorgeous locales in "Cuba" and Iceland and vibrant, colorful photography.)
Peter Hunt (On Her Majesty's Secret Service)
(After YOLT, Hunt brought the series back into thriller territory and his hard work on OHMSS helps produce one of the finest 007 films)
Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger)
(Hamilton took the screen character that Young had shaped and gave him even more trademark style. Hamilton's Bond would give us the character we have today.)

WORST:
Lewis Gilbert (You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker)
(I'm sorry, but I find all of Gilbert's films to be too long, too over-the-top, and generally beyond belief. You Only Live Twice is the biggest disappointment of the three. After coming off a high with Thunderball, could the 007 team do any better? My answer - no. The Spy Who Loved Me is the best of the three, but still too OTT for my tastes. Moonraker, probably the worst film of the series IMO.

BEST
  • Terrence Young - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
  • Guy Hamilton - GOLDFINGER
  • Lewis Gilbert - MOONRAKER
  • John Glen - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
  • Martin Campbell - CASINO ROYALE
WORST
  • Terrence Young - Dr. No
  • Guy Hamilton - LIVE AND LET DIE (if for no other reason than Guy Hamilton saying that James Bond is a classy guy and would never be seen in dirty, grimy places and then proceeding to film a scene in a run-down alley)
  • Lewis Gilbert - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
  • John Glen - A VIEW TO A KILL
  • Martin Campbell - GOLDENEYE

Best:

Young - DR. NO
Hamilton - THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
Gilbert - YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
Glen - LICENCE TO KILL
Campbell - CASINO ROYALE

(and I'll take the above as my top five Bond films, too)

Worst:

Young - THUNDERBALL
Hamilton - LIVE AND LET DIE
Gilbert - MOONRAKER (although I do like this film - I just wouldn't say it's quite as good as his other Bonds)
Glen - A VIEW TO A KILL (ditto)
Campbell - GOLDENEYE (again, a flick I enjoy, but it's so vastly inferior to CASINO ROYALE it isn't even funny.... then again, that's true of just about all of the Bond movies)
