  • 1946: Timothy Dalton was born in Colwyn Bay, Wales on March 21st. Dalton is the eldest of five children. His father is in advertising, and moves the family to Derbyshire, England when Dalton is three.

  • 1962: Dalton sees a performance of Macbeth that has a life altering effect—he decides to pursue acting as a profession.

  • 1964-1966: Dalton joins the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, whose distinguished alumni includes Roger Moore, Lois Maxwell, and Diana Rigg.

  • 1966: Dalton’s TV debut as Peter in Sat’day While Sunday. The series would last 14 episodes.

  • 1968: Cubby Broccoli reportedly talks with Dalton about playing James Bond for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Peter Hunt says Dalton was neither considered nor screen tested. Later that year Dalton made his film debut as King Philip of France in The Lion in Winter.

  • 1970: Dalton sets hearts a flutter as the smoldering Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.

  • 1971: Broccoli approaches Dalton about playing James Bond. Sources conflict over whether or not this was the first or second time he is approached. Dalton feels he is too young and does not pursue the matter.

  • 1975: Dalton gets away from his usual costume dramas and stars in the espionage drama Permission to Kill.

  • 1978: Dalton stars in Sextette with cinematic icon Mae West where they sing a duet of “Love will keep us together.”

  • 1979: Dalton stars as Damien Roth in the Charlie’s Angels episode “Fallen Angel” (aired Oct 24). During the show, Dalton’s character is compared to James Bond.

  • 1980: Dalton stars as Prince Barin in the sci-fi camp extravaganza Flash Gordon. This film is his first cinema exposure to a mass audience.

  • 1981: According to his biography, Broccoli approaches Dalton again as a possible replacement for Roger Moore.

  • 1985: Dalton stars in Doctor and The Devils with fellow Welshman and future Bond villain Jonathan Pryce.

  • 1986: Timothy Dalton is announced as James Bond #4 on August 6th. His official unveiling would be later at a press conference in Vienna, Austria. Dalton tells reporters that he has read the books—and he intends to be faithful to the spirit of Ian Fleming’s work.

  • 1987: Dalton’s first Bond film, The Living Daylights premieres on June 29th. Dalton’s debut, combined with the 25th anniversary of Bond in the cinema, brings a worldwide renewed interest in all things 007.

  • 1989: Dalton’s second Bond film, License To Kill premieres on June 13th. Perhaps the most polarizing Bond film, some see it has a great Fleming inspired tale of revenge, others see it as too dark and humorless. A weak marketing campaign and stiff competition are contributing factors for the low box office performance.

  • 1991: Dalton stars as matinee idol Neville Sinclair in The Rocketeer.

  • 1994: Dalton resigns from the James Bond role on April 12th. Fans continue to debate about whether he jumped or was pushed. While his relationship with the Broccolis was the best of any of the 5 actors, however his relationship with MGM/UA was not as solid. Then on November 13th Dalton appears as Rhett Butler in Scarlett, the sequel to Gone With The Wind.

  • 1996: Dalton serves as a pallbearer for Cubby Broccoli’s funeral on July 1st.

  • 1997: Timothy’s son Alexander Peter Dalton born in August. The mother is Russian beauty Oksana Grigorieva. From Russia With Love, indeed!

  • 1999: Dalton stars as Casear in Hallmark’s Cleopatra.

  • 2003: Dalton stars as explorer Damien Drake in Looney Toons: Back in Action.

  • 2005: Dalton stars as Amphitryon in the mini series Hercules.

  • 2006: Dalton stars in the ITV Miss Marple Thriller The Sittaford Mystery.

  • 2007: Dalton plays the role of Simon Skinner in the second Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright comedy Hot Fuzz.
