As Ananova has reported John Cleese, the new Q in Bond 20, is working on a remake of what could be considered his most popular role ever.

John Cleese has been supervising a German remake of Fawlty Towers.

The RTL station has commissioned the BBC and Cleese to work on a pilot show.

German comedy is currently in the doldrums after two stations announced they are reducing their comedy output.

Hamburg-based ARD has scrapped its in-house comedy and SAT 1 is ditching Ingolf Lux’s comedy show.

One of the few programmes SAT 1 is keeping is its series of Men Behaving Badly, known as Men Are Embarrassing in Germany.

RTL spokeswoman Sylke Zeidler said: “John Cleese came over to help out with the filming of Fawlty Towers. He worked on the script and co-writing and he also offered our crew advice.”

Spokesperson for regional TV and radio station, Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) Martin Gartzke, says the British influence may be to blame for the problems German TV comedy is facing.

He said: “In my opinion, some of the programmes were unsuccessful because of their very dry humour where they tried and failed to copy the British – it was all a bit too stiff. Perhaps we should work more on our own German humour.”
